The fullest merger of old and new is represented in this dress. The form of the surrounding robe is open, and even the neckline could seem to be decades earlier. But the textile design has been subdued, and the lighter taffeta robe is paired with a white petticoat for an effect that resembles neoclassicism emerging from the chrysalis of the ancien régime.

Un banyan  es una prenda usada por hombres y mujeres europeos a finales del 17 y 18 siglo, influenciado por el kimono japonés traído a Europa por la Compañía Holandesa de las Indias Orientales a mediados del siglo XVII.

Las mujeres europeas usaban banianos en el siglo XVIII como batas por la mañana, antes de vestirse para el día, o por la noche antes de acostarse sobre ropa interior, como lo describe el Victoria and Albert Museum en Londres, Inglaterra.

Estaba de moda que los hombres de inclinación intelectual o filosófica se pintaran los retratos con banianos.

A banyan  is a garment worn by European men and women in the late 17th and 18th century, influenced by the Japanese kimono brought to Europe by the Dutch East India Company in the mid-17th century.

European women wore banyans in the 18th century as dressing gowns in the morning, before robing for the day, or in the evening before bed over undergarments, as described by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England.

It was fashionable for men of an intellectual or philosophical bent to have their portraits painted while wearing banyans.

18th Century Women’s Fashion

Women’s Clothing in the 18th Century is often renown for its Extravagance, for good reason. Unlike in prior Centuries, the Fashion Standards for Women became intensely ornamented, hence why it is one of my favorite Eras. 

This Post goes through the 1750s-1790s, so it is quite long, but women’s Clothing is always more varied than the Men’s it seems.
