Chisaki was wasted
With the MHA manga ending and getting an end to Chisaki’s story I have just a couple of things to say. Most importantly wtf was that. Fortunately in every other piece of media I chose to consume my favorite character is usually one of the main ones or at the very least they are a fan favorite, originally when I started to watch MHA I fell in love with Bakugou but then everything changed when I saw season four and laid my eyes on Mr. Evil Bird Man. I was not expecting Horikoshi to dive into characters who really despised quirks and their existence. It was a fresh perspective on the series and as we got to learn more about Chisaki I started to understand him more and more. I know fans of the show sometimes make jokes about being reincarnated into the show and being born with a hammer for a head. At first it would be fun to go into your favorite series, but the implications of that universes rules can seriously mess you up. For example Dabi’s flames burn him. Quirks are not always a blessing they can be a curse, a sickness.
I believe Chisaki was the first character to bring this up maybe besides characters like Skinner showing that he was bullied for his. Quirks are terrifying when you think about their potential effects, Eri accidentally killed her parents when she got hers and Shigaraki killed his when he manifested an altered version of overhaul. This brings up my next point. Why did nobody dwell on the fact that decay is the first half of overhaul?? Dose this not imply that Chisaki was experimented on as a kid as well? Is that why he is fine doing it to Eri since he clearly shows no remorse to her for his actions, only Pops? Is there some sort of trauma with him and that that he never addressed so he believes that what hypothetically happened to him was okay? Is that why he doesn’t care that he did the same pain onto Eri? This is where my issue lies. Chisaki was used as nothing more than a plot point to push the story further. We barley know anything about him. Why is he the way he is? There are so many unanswered questions.
Chisaki was used to introduce Nighteye, the big three and Eri’s quirk so there was a way to defeat All For One. He doesn’t get expanded on past the bare minimum which I think is insane for a show that has as many flashbacks that it has. The time line we have is that he was in one of All For Ones orphanages, he was somehow on the streets, Pops picked him up, he got into fights growing up defending his fathers honor and he was never really stopped from continuing to do so, then he’s a grown adult and we see his crazy plan being told to his father and he freaks out to then Kai needing to please and repay him so bad he did with anyway. Did Pops not give him enough love and reassurance growing up? Why did he feel the need to go out of his way to help his family. We know the Yakuza was weaker, were they being mistreated? If so why were they allowed to exist if they were just going to be mistreated?
Next thing I want to talk about is Pops and Kai’s reunion, I’m so upset that Pops was somehow woken up via technology. They should have just left him in the coma if Chisaki wasn’t going to get his quirk back. Now I like how Chisaki didn’t get his quirk back but it would have been so easy for him to with the way other characters quirks evolved, like Toga being able to use other people’s quirks of the blood she took, why couldn’t Overhaul turn into creating matter or having skin touch not just hands touch? How hard was it for Pops to be one of the civilians Shigaraki killed and Kai to go into such a panic that his quirk evolves and he helps the heros or goes after Shigaraki himself??? Which brings me to my next hot take. The only reason people hate Overhaul is because we got to meet his victim personally. Shigaraki, Dabi, Toga, all killed and hurt others but their crimes get overlooked because we never knew the names, faces, or anything really about the people who’s lives were taken. I’m not excusing Overhauls behavior whatsoever because the whole Eri thing was insane. I don’t understand why he couldn’t have just taken her hair, or sweat or something. Why blood??? If he needed her DNA it’s literally all over her, you really needed her blood? Okay crazy. ANOTHER THING THATS CRAZY IS POPS COMMENT. What do you mean Hari should have done better? This guy seems to love putting his problems onto other people, Kai is Hari’s problem, Eri was Kai’s problem. Dude you are his Dad maybe if YOU parented him he wouldn’t have turned out like this. Hari was his somewhat equal you had power not him.
Another thing people get mad about is the killing of Magne, she attacked first, just saying.
Lastly him losing his arms was beautiful irony. Yakuza getting fingers cut off for messing up in missions, him cutting off Compresses arm, him wanting to destroy Quirks. Shigaraki was a twisted genius when cutting off Overhauls arms. I’m not mad about him getting the consequences of his actions. I’m just upset he was never expanded on and the fandom collectively hating his surface level character when he had and has so much potential.
I might type more later I just wanted to get this off of my chest.
I was wondering if you have any thoughts about the difference between Overhaul's story being handled compared to how Endeavor's was? I feel like Endeavor was given a better hand than Overhaul. Both in fandom spaces and in the story. I've been thinking about it and I wonder what circumstances could get Endeavor the same ending as Overhaul and vice versa. It almost makes me want to make an au to explore this.
First of all, Horikoshi likes Endeavor and he obviously doesn't like Kai. His writing is hypocritical when you comparing Kai to similar characters like Endeavor and Tomura, characters that Horikoshi actually likes.
To be fair, Endeavor has shown remorse and regret for the right people. He's put in a lot of effort and sacrifice to better his family's circumstances.
Kai has shown only remorse and regret for losing his family. He's desperate for Pops' forgiveness so he won't be thrown away (again?). Kai's making no effort to right his wrongs to the real reason he should feel guilty, Eri.
But here's the thing, Endeavor is a lot older and has had more time to figure out HOW and WHY and to whom he should feel guilty. Endeavor is also in a whole lot healthier situation to get through these feelings, to figure them out and find a way through it all.
Kai got his arms chopped off and immediately thrown in solitary for almost a year. He lost his family, freedom, and dignity in less than a day. His situation not healthy to say the least.
It's very obvious that Kai is very emotional, which is surprising given his villian arc was written as this cold and heartless capo. Solitary is what I think did most of his mental destruction. The only person he cared about would naturally be the only thing on his mind while he was all alone. He doesn't blame Eri for everything, he blames himself. He knows he's the one that messed up. Eri is still only a quirk in his eyes. How could you blame your product for losing everything and more?
Anyway, back on topic, Kai needs guidance and Endeavor was able to get through it himself, miraculously.
Also, Endeavor has been able to talk to his victims directly. Kai has had no contact to Eri, if not been separated from her more. I will forever stand by the belief that anybody else's opinions on Kai do not matter other than Eri's. Just like how Endeavor's family were the only people who's opinions mattered regarding what he did.
One thing to really remember is that Kai was a villain and Endeavor was a Hero. Kai has done no good to make up for his wrongs. And he's never, and probably will never be able to, do anything to help his case.
It's tragedy vs redemption.

His repeating shattered bone and mental pain not going to last that long ngl
That kinda remind me of how some real world country treat young veteran. Wasting all your limb and prime day to fight for country and come back. For a pension that doesn’t enough to live comfortably, mental issue that make finding job very hard, missing limb in inaccessible world, and treat like shit when you end up in the street because the problem mentioned before
- Dabi in the tank. Literally half conscious corpse pinned to a board like insect specimen. And have no say in who can come visit him? His smack talk is right they treat him as animal inna zoo. And the audacity of Endeavor who want to reconcile? I mean look at all the smack talk when Endeavor try to talk to him. Shoto and the sibling and the mom should be the only one allow to visit him. Not Endeavor. Dabi only reply nicely to Shoto because he’s the only one who doesn’t into this forced reconciliation things. Shoto just want to talk to him, what’s his favorite food.
At least Dabi should have a say in denying who can visit him. And Endeavor should get more shit coming his way more than just losing an arm and retired. Dishonorable discharge equivalent of hero association or something, get his rank revoked at least
Force reconciliation is a big problem in asian family. Esp abusive household one. Personal experience, sadly. They could done so many wrong and everyone still expect you to reconcile because they are *parent* regardless of how much damage has been done, how many time you try to communicate with them that they hurt you and it’s way too late to listen to what left of your kid. Or that they never listen to you and push you into walking on path of self destruction just to prove themself to the parent.
- Chisaki, oh they did Chisaki really dirty. He’s reduced to animal that bang their head on things in concrete box with no enrichment already. And now his pops going to add even more pressure on already broken man. I was expect something along the line of he’s getting bit more sanity and say sorry to Eri or something. Or at least have realization that he sucks and want to work on fixing the damage (manually, because his quirk factor is arm and quirk doesn’t work on prosthetic)
Also what kind of grandpa just left their grandkid to the guy who have no idea how to be good parent and never check up on them before Chisaki put him in coma anyway. Do you even visit Eri after haul her off to Chisaki lab? Do you never give a damn about Chisaki mental state growing up? It take a long way for someone to actually become mad scientist and no one even notice that? Equally terrible.
Im somewhat convinced that they just hate Chisaki. While I love armless bearded depressed Chisaki. He got no further character development, no backstory to explain why he sucks or why he choose to do this. Just mad scientist become pile of mess and now adding his pops as a cherry on top
Doubling down on my "the ending to BNHA is intended to be satire on how society can be trained to uphold broken systems and commit great injustices with much enthusiasm and patriotism and any attempt to change the status quo will be quashed to thunderous applause" hot take because no way in fucking HELL did I just read "after the manga repeatedly drilled into us that this was the story of how Deku became the greatest hero in the world, after he defeats Shigaraki and becomes Quirkless again he gets a job in fast food"
The story is literally ending with nothing fundamentally changing, a bunch of good people have died, become disabled, and or are now powerless, the people in charge of many of the systemic evils that actually created many of the series' threats and antagonists are just totally fine, kicking it chilling not being punished at all, Endeavor as a symbol of the broken Hero Society, a top hero who turned out to be literally beating his family behind closed doors, isn't punished at all, his family even still talks to him, he still has a job as one of the most top paying Heroes, while Shigaraki and most of his friends are dead
The story is ending with Deku not just powerless, but LITERALLY powerless: he's a fucking KONBINI EMPLOYEE? So he doesn't even have any power or authority as a cop or a government employee or like, even a clerk for a hero? You're telling me they couldn't even reward the guy who saved the planet a high paying desk job somewhere? He's literally punted down to the bottom rungs of Japanese society the MICROSECOND he's Quirkless again?
How genuinely fucking depressing. Oh my god guys, Deku did NOT deserve this. Jesus Christ if you're gonna make anyone Quirkless and give them some sort of shitty humbling job that'll make them appreciate life more, Bakugou is RIGHT FUCKING THERE--

I just watch MHA with english dub for first time and finally understand why most people still think Chisaki still have it in him to keep being villain instead of being broken caged animal who bang his head with things.
The difference is the voice.

Armless Chisaki in JP dub sound pathetic. A depressed, full of regret, post heavy crying shaken dry heaving voice. He barely have any voice left in him, since he is probably haven’t talk to anyone since his lock up. He sound like someone squeezed his throat when he’s talking and you can barely hear it over background noise compare to everyone else
Armless Chisaki in EN dub sound angry. A bottled up, loud demanding angry shaking yelling. Still full of energy and power of the pre arm snatched Overhaul. There are too much power in his voice and no regret aside from the word he speak. His voice is too loud and clear for a tattered broken man, he’s even louder than Endeavor and Deku.
Same dialogue in same scene can give the audience different feeling toward character when it have different feeling in the sound. Including natural tone shift like whimpering in JP dub and angry voice shake in EN dub.
Chisaki JP dub sound like he would say sorry to Eri and do everything in pleading Eri to help fix his Boss.
Chisaki EN dub sound like he will demand and made Eri fix up his Boss by force.
Anyway that is my little eureka moment. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
The worst part is that the majority of the hero society has learned absolutely nothing and they keep refusing to empathize (not sympathize) with the villains.
It takes an AFO to raise people like Overhaul, Dabi and Tomura— to turn vulnerable kids into villains. It takes an Endeavor. It takes Toga's parents or Twice's boss or the social inequality Mr. Compress and Magne and Spinner lived through. Even AFO was made by the circumstances. So yes, you can't avoid terrible things from happening. Yes, they all were wrong and dangerous and cruel.
But the problem is not that there's people with the potential to become like them out there. In fact, anyone can become like them any day now. The problem is that no one stopped the injustice they suffered because they didn't care at the time; they only cared when they started to become a real threat.
Like, Overhaul's boss playing moral high ground over Overhaul???? My dude, it was a Mafia!! What did he think would happen if he raised a kid in a mafia environment???
I'm not excusing Overhaul's actions, because they were his own. Yet you cannot possibly tell me that he was born like that.
If the solution of the hero society is to keep an eye on anyone who can become a new AFO/Tomura, so they can incarcerate them sooner or kill them maybe??? Yep, absolutely zero learning from the whole experience.

Is what Pops doing wrong? No. Is the vague ending of Kai's character infuriating? Yes.
