On writing a (somewhat) in-character Bill

Ever since I started writing Conspiratheory, I’ve been getting messages asking how it’s possible to write a Bill who’s - well, if not in-character, at least somewhat comparable to his canon counterpart. So here’s a (massively belated) explanation of what I do!

Go to the Gravity Falls wikia, head to the episode transcript pages for Dreamscaperers, Sock Opera, The Last Mabelcorn, and Weirdmageddon parts 1, 2 and 3. Read Bill’s lines over and over, until you practically know them by heart. Get a feel for his personality and outlook. Look at the techniques the writers use to shape his character. (This is useful for writing any GF character, not just Bill!)

Bill is a character who defies the norms and expectations of reality, and that’s reflected in his writing. So take common turns of phrase/literary techniques, and twist them. One shortcut I use is to head to http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/, find a random assortment of idioms, and rewrite them to better suit Bill’s character. So one technique you can use is to take what is meant metaphorically, and bring it into literal existence. For instance:

Original idiom: Cute as a button

Example:

“Oh, THAT? That’s simple!” Bill flapped his hand forwards in a trivialising gesture. “Didn’t I already tell you? I LIKE you, kid! I mean, you’re smart, funny AND resourceful! Doesn’t hurt that you’re as cute as a button!” In a burst of blue flame, Bill manifested a metal button, which he then tossed at Dipper. Dipper tried not to wince as he realised his reflection appeared to be screaming and pounding at the gleaming surface.

You've probably answered this somewhere, but how would you describe Bill's feelings for Dipper in the familiar AU? Are his feelings pretty much the same for Dipper's reincarnations?

Bill is sick.

Seeing a human shaking with terror, teary-eyed and upset is hilarious! They’re so easy to crush, the fallout’s entertaining!

Somehow, through this delusional, awful, screwed up emotional lens, it’s not hilarious. Just for this one particular mortal. 

On that asshole’s face, those emotions - 

Oh man, it sucks! 

It makes Bill’s mortal about as fun as - as having something stuck between your teeth that you can’t work out with your tongue. Or like having one sock keep sliding down so it catches under your heel. Or like some splinter you keep gnawing on, but it won’t quite get out from under your skin. It’s that one place on your back you can’t quite reach to scratch, no matter how you twist to get at it, it’s infuriating and untouchable and fuck that.

Bill really freakin’ wishes this would stop - but it’s gotten under his exoskeleton and into what passes for his bloodstream now, and for some sane reason he’s decided to keep it up. It’s not like he gets this kinda fight anywhere else! If he’s gotta wait a couple decades to see it again, and put up with some other bullshit - eh. It’s worth it.
