i don't think any of you understand how many more bwba seasons i would have suffered through just to get more sonny content. dead serious, he's my favorite all cgi character. up there with victor and hiro imo. idc if thomas has to dick around in india or china or australia for 86 more seasons if only to get 1 Sonny Episode per season. he is worth it!!!!!!

What Were You THINKING, You Silly Engine?! Scolded His Driver.

“What were you THINKING, you silly engine?!” scolded his driver.

“…I had concepts of a plan,” Diesel replied feebly.

i'm a little ill right now and honestly don't have motivation to make sketches (i haven't posted my art here in a long ass time- and honestly good for me because i look back to those pictures and think damn, was that me??) so here's some little emily headcanon / backstory thing i came up with based on these facts about her on the ttte wiki and the official wikipedia page about her basis:

I'm A Little Ill Right Now And Honestly Don't Have Motivation To Make Sketches (i Haven't Posted My Art
I'm A Little Ill Right Now And Honestly Don't Have Motivation To Make Sketches (i Haven't Posted My Art
I'm A Little Ill Right Now And Honestly Don't Have Motivation To Make Sketches (i Haven't Posted My Art
I'm A Little Ill Right Now And Honestly Don't Have Motivation To Make Sketches (i Haven't Posted My Art

so without furder ado, my emily backstory headcanon(s):

so we all know that emily is the safety engine- and compared to the other members of the steam team, she doesn't get herself into very silly accidents or derails often- sure, sometimes she can't read the atmosphere or does gestures that aren't exactly helpful to a specific situation (such as getting mavis flowers when she was down), but she's very introspective, often being able to tell what's up with her friends and frankly, doing odd jobs until she becomes the safety engine- but also having a bit of a bossy attitude about her when it comes to such things, like bossing around thomas and percy following a storm, and becoming impatient when she feels as if the other engines have little regard for their work or her work- but the question remains- why?

it's known that emily's engine class faced issues with traction and staying smoothly on the rails- something that we see frequently in the model series, she lightly "rocks and rolls" on the track- additionally, her engine class got into two big derailment accidents- one where the engine derailed on broken rail, killing a passenger, and one where the removal of a speed restriction on the track caused the engine to derail and kill two people

additionally, only the first of the class is left preserved in the current day- i headcanon that in ttte, this engine was last minute bought by the fat controller to help out on the northwestern railway- something that emily remains thankful for, but unused to.

i headcanon that since most of her class was removed from service around the 1890's (just around when edward was born), emily has little to no experience about railways in the more recent times, and that emily remained pulling passenger trains on her former railway with an "engines are seen, not heard" attitude- similar to what duke says to peter sam and sir handel about his younger days. additionally, since emily was the first of her class, i would assume she would be subject to more experimentation and/or exposure of what actually happens to engines rather quickly, given her curious personality- she would probably spend a lot of time at the steamworks on the gnr, with the workers there adoring her curious personality and her desire to be learning new things- leading to them talking to her through any and every modification she might receive, any repairs she might receive, any repairs that other engines might receive- the works. the workers there treat her very humanly, almost as if she's purely a human without arms or legs- they let her smell and experience the texture of human food and drinks (receiving some funny reviews from her in the process), read the paper out loud to her, teach her how to do things such as mathematics and telling her about literature- you get the point. around when her class became decomissioned and the railway preparing to send the other engines for scrap, the workers talked to her about it- and her reaction was very very human. more human than most other workers had seen throughout their lifetime.

while emily was devastated over her siblings' deaths, she also remained confused- she had not officially been named by her controller at the time, and she experienced the same issues as the rest of her class did, but up until then was lucky to never have derailed or killed another being in the process. the engines on the gnr were given numbers after older locomotives- essentially taking their places on the railway as the older locomotives would soon be forgotten- making emily wonder "why? why do i deserve to stay and be preserved and restored to working order while all my siblings are sent for scrap?" this also made her feel queasy about being a new engine and/or about seeing new engines on the railway- she began to worry about how it was unfair, that older engines would be sent to scrap as newer ones came, but also terrifying her to realize that they didn't even stand some sort of protection in the process, and that the vast majority of steam locomotives would eventually face the same fate as their predecessors (additionally, i like to think the gnr had a "no-fraternizing-during-work" policy for the engines, and most of the engines would be too exhausted at the end of the day for deeper conversations with one another- also leading to emily panicking about who even are the engines she worked with, what are their likes/dislikes, etc- this also leads to why she got frustrated at thomas when he slept with her in the sheds in calling all engines but that's a point i'll get to later)- sure, she spoke to the engines while they worked, and in fact sometimes told them what was going on and tried to reassure them while she was in the works- but it was never enough to keep the guilt about her being chosen to be preserved and an engine's life cycle away.

due to all of these things- most of emily's relaxed conversation occuring with humans, the majority of her knowledge coming from humans and their perspective, and the lack of fraternizing with other engines while at work, emily became somewhat stunted developmentally- sure, she's older than edward by a good twenty years- but she doesn't even know how to act on a running railway anymore- after all, the times have changed. this leads to emily's occasional short temper with the other engines, and even leads to the events when we first meet her, where she takes thomas' coaches on accident- she was not used to asking, she simply did as she was told on her own railway- twisting her attempts at becoming friendly with the engines on sodor at first

when sir topham hatt first bought her, the workers at the steamworks were delighted that emily would not only be able to run again, but that she would be in a place that she would be cared for, that sir topham hatt would be able to put the time and energy into repairing her and taking care of her that the workers at the gnr were beginning to lose access to- this led to a little "going away" party for emily- many tears were shed, and many memories were shared- even if now most of the workers are gone, emily looks back at them fondly, probably telling the engines about her times with them, and her times on the gnr.

here's where emily's safety engine backstory comes through- remember how her engine class used to derail and "rock and roll" quite often? this led to her become a worrywart- not just about herself, but about the other engines and their safety as well- she was concerned about henry when his tubes were leaky, she stood up for salty against thomas and percy's teasing, she looks at james and thomas almost like her little brothers (because obviously, they get into some of the dumbest and most careless accidents- and in the earlier series, don't really learn from it)- the list goes on, but she essentially ends up worrying about herself and the other engines A LOT. however, deep down this is because of her revelation about scrapping while she was at the gnr- she herself does not want to be scrapped, but she doesn't want any of her new friends to be scrapped either- especially since many perfectly working steam locomotives would be sent to the scrapyard at alarming rates.

now this is where her probably not socializing with many other engines whilst working or resting during her time at the gnr comes in- remember when thomas sleep whistles, keeps chatting off to her, and snoring when they shared a shed together? and just how annoying she found it? i believe she was overstimulated by it, seeing that she was still a rather new engine at the time, and slept by herself at knapford sheds. secretly, she was probably scared thomas' sleep whistling might send her away, or distract her from her rest and cause issues tomorrow- when she realizes that that isn't the case, when thomas leaves she begins to feel lonely, having enjoyed the company of her friend and realizing that nothing was going to happen to either of them after all- and when she was invited to take a berth at tidmouth sheds, she was delighted- with some learning curves, obviously- after all, she's very new to this

i imagine that edward would take to her endearingly, realizing that she's probably having an inner conondrum she doesn't openly speak of, thus being easier on her- he would also probably wonder how he ended up being an engine younger than her by the years but older in personality, but chooses to not mention it- sometimes they get along talking about their days on their old railways, and it would imagine they can get into pretty deep philosophical conversations (do engines have philosophy?) if emily ever lets her guard down

similarly, henry would probably look to her for advice and learning how to stand up for himself, and being kinder- not only was he more of a cynical character in the early series, but he was also very very ill- and that combined with his desire to prove himself past all his ailments probably turned him into a very harsh person- something he originally couldn't really understand- and something that emily was able to help him through, talking about his feelings

obviously in the series she also has her bossy moments, being impatient when clearing up the rails from a storm and taking gordon's express- i imagine that it was taken control of by sir topham hatt in a much different manner, remembering how emily was at the gnr's steamworks- he speaks to her almost like a teenager about her actions, letting her bask and self reflect instead of immediately assigning her to other work until she can be trusted again- thus making her one of his more sensible engines

however, emily does have her own moments of not being so sensible- for example, when she wished to be streamlined like caitlin, admiring her (and victor was basically like nah you don't need that 💀)- insecurity from her old age and wishing to be something more than just an odd jobs engine probably made her a little bit insecure. another great example is when she's with whiff- obviously, she's not one for smells, but to go on and laugh at him and be frantic about being seen with him just because her peers laughed at him? clearly she had a moment of smokebox fog there.

i imagine that emily actually wouldnt have much prejudice towards diesels- sure, she got mad at him for taking the coaches when being ill, but that was because he was ill and pushing himself- it has nothing to do with him being a diesel (something i assume would surprise diesel, especially for such an old engine like emily)- i believe that she wouldn't even know what diesels actually are for a while, but she would see them as any useful engine, and that once she did learn about the steamie/diesel conflict she would try to calm her inner crisis about scrapping- sir topham hatt wouldn't do that, and they're only doing their purpose after all

additionally, emily probably doesn't take kindly to hearing about engines getting scrapped- in her younger days, she probably remained blissfully unaware of the mechanics of it, but as she got older and learned more about scrapping it probably terrifies her, and she believes that all engines can be useful and don't deserve to be damned to the scrapyard for any reason

back to thomas and james? yeah. she probably sees them as her "annoying little brothers" that she loves very dearly- which is confirmed for james in a magazine story- but it's definitely a much different relationship than what she had with younger engines at the steamworks, with her relationship with the two being more freeflowing. i assume james has some sort of insecurity about being a "failed prototype" and an experimental engine on his old railway, and emily manages to help him get through it while talking about the positives and the actual mechanics of it, and reaffirming that he still is a really useful and really good engine.

and as for thomas? playful banter. so much banter. sometimes they act silly and fight like actual human siblings would, but at the end of the day they do care for eachother deeply- think of her having to hold a metaphorical leash on him, at times 😭

back to emily's conondrums- this leads to her being a very safe engine- in fact, being one of the safest on sir topham hatt's railway- initially i imagine she wouldn't care much for not being numbered, as it soothed her inner panic of not taking a scrapped engine's place, but over time as she began to heal i imagine that she would desire it in some way- and experience such delight when she is numbered and given the position! she wears her number very proudly on the nwr and is very very proud of being the nwr's safety engine :)

sheesh, this was LONG- i'm taking some time away from the phone- if you managed to make it this far i hope you're having a lovely day :) (also can you tell i'm an older sister 💀💀)

hiii! i have a few :3 1) stirling singles were built without front couplings because they were expected to never need help from another engine 2) idk specifics but stirlings were brought back in use during ww1 and proved themselves useful after being deemed redundant since the end of victoria's reign 3) they were nicknamed "eight footers" bc the diameter of their large drive wheels were 8'1" hope this helps!!

Sooooooo, I kinda came up with a cool backstory for Emily, involving her sisters and their time in Scotland, only to be super disappointed. It sounds like there was only ONE sterling single that ever in Scotland. :/

THIS COMPLICATES THINGS SO MUCH! I HAD AN IDEA FOR WHOLE TTTE FAN SPECIAL ABOUT THIS DANGIT! Grrrr.

Granted, there were a few things that could work. But this particular detail really shot me in the foot. I'm thinking about going completely "alternate reality" and only changing a few things about her backstory and his sister(s). Because ttte does that all the time. Honestly it's just easier. We'll see.

Anyways, if you guys know any cool facts about Stirling Singles, let me know! I want to hear!

OMG!!!! Wonderful art!!! :3 this seriously looks like it could be a storyboard for an episode. so so so good!! but of course, this put my thinking cap on, and two things in particular here grabbed me. 1) This was one of (the only?) bad things Sonny has done without direct influence from Baz and Bernie. Granted, they probably told him to be standoffish with other engines he meets, but growling at Rosie was wayyyyy out of line. Out of everything Sonny has done, this is probably the one thing he agonizes the most over because he has no one but himself to blame. I wouldn't be surprised if this messed with Sonny's sense of self a little too. Since STH's engines are expected be good and upstanding engines, Sonny might find it a bit difficult to view himself that way because how rude he was to Rosie. 2) Rosie holding a grudge feels perfectly in character, at least in this iteration of her. She probably has other moments of this before BWBA, but to be BWBA-specific, "Rosie is Red" comes to mind. The rest of the episode is STUPID but something that stuck out to me was how quickly she was to get annoyed with the teasing, and how she tried distancing herself from Thomas pretty early on. This makes to me because not only does she have a bit of a fiery personality, but now that she knows her worth, and has picked up a set job that is probably pretty stressful (piloting at Vicarstown station), I imagine her tolerance for nonsense is lower than it was, than when she was lavender and carefree. This is the end of the rambling (for now) and once again, beautiful art!!! :D with all this sonny talk, maybe this could be the start of the SONNY FANDOM REVOLUTION!!!! >:3c

I Have Been Thoroughly Inspired By Wonderful Comments On My Previous Sonny Post By @mindthegoop And @friendly-emerald-emily

i have been thoroughly inspired by wonderful comments on my previous sonny post by @mindthegoop and @friendly-emerald-emily and it has made the rosie and sonny dynamic take over my entire brain!!! ...you maaay have got my brain on the sonny and rosie dynamic ! i can't believe i didn't mention it in my initial post aaaaaa! i think him feeling genuinely terrible and rosie being rightfully annoyed would be an interesting episode concept! him being rude to her was one of the only times he instigated something bad himself instead of being cooerced by baz and bernie (we assume, at least) and it was so uncalled for! i imagine he would indeed feel dreadful, but rosie deserves to have her feelings and shouldn't just have to forgive him without him redeeming himself to her!! i also just like the idea of rosie being one who can hold a grudge, hah. thanks for adding to the sonny enjoyment/analysis to my smol sonny post :3

this. is. BRILLIANT! i dont mind being tagged at all, this was a joy to read! @mindthegoop i hope YOU dont being tagged because now its your turn! MWUAHAHAHAHHA >:D i agree on all of your points, but something that caught my eye was: "They might not have direct control in this scene but the influence they've had on him obviously affects how he conducts himself, it feels as though he's always thinking about what he is and isn't "allowed" to do. Sonny is called useless throughout the whole special and I think he's internalised that."

While Baz and Bernie as characters on their own aren't all that interesting, what makes them stand out to me is their interactions with Sonny. BWBA was such a sterilized, dumbed down, and "clean" version of the show, but not gonna lie, the way Baz spoke to Sonny was almost reminding me of the classic series. Specifically, some of 'Arry and Bert's dialogue in "Stepney Gets Spooked". Like, when was the last time an engine was seriously threatened to be scrapped? By their human owner no less? It's obvious how damaging being treated like this has been for Sonny, and his interaction at that point with Thomas in particular, it really feels like his social skills had been stifled. And then, when Sonny finally sticks up for himself, Baz and Bernie abandon him for Kenji to get away, who they haven't even met yet. Ouch. It's very easy to interpret that as Sonny having always been replaceable to Baz and Bernie, and it's not hard to imagine that this would have been the killing blow to his self-esteem if he hadn't been allowed to stay on Sodor. Considering Sonny is from the mainland, and I'm assuming Baz and Bernie kept Sonny out of the hands of scrapping because they forced him to be loyal to him, I wonder how he would get on with Oliver? Considering they're both (likely in Sonny's case) rouges who escaped their original railways. I think Oliver's bigger ego about his escape and Sonny's more "I don't want to talk about it" approach could lead to an interesting interaction, or even conflict! While I'm not quite sure how I would exactly go about drafting up a Rosie and Sonny episode, here's my pitch for an introduction! Rosie's doing her job as usual, when Sonny comes sidling up with a good train and internally she's all like "Ugh, not him again." and Sonny, expecting a cold welcome anyhow, says nothing and stays quiet. Almost as if he's trying to get out of her way. From there though...? I'm not sure if it would be more in character for Sonny to continue to try and make himself seen and not heard, or if he would (very anxiously, mind you) try to break the ice and make things up. I think it would depend how far he's gone on working on his self-confidence after Baz and Bernie shattered it. Hope all 3 Sonny fans enjoyed the ramble :P

Ok I had to get this out bc @friendly-emerald-emily (hope u don't mind being tagged) brought up a very good point about Sonny's interactions with Rosie and how people don't tend to touch on that a lot, including myself actually, so what better opportunity to have a little ramble about my fav little guy again *dances*

Rosie is the first engine Sonny interacts with, but they never get to have a closed arc together, which is a shame! In an era where the execs claimed they were working in the best interest of the female characters and giving them the spotlight, the only female character Sonny ever really interacts with... is Rosie... Unless you count Rebecca talking To him (which I don't really), he doesn't even get to interact with Ruth! Like are you kidding, not even Ruth? She clearly holds no animosity towards him, but it's herself and the Earl that Sonny directly affects by helping with Baz and Bernie's plans.

This also marks Rosie's last appearance iirc, it's such a shame because this one interaction with Sonny could have made for a brilliant final episode for her!

...

Anyhow, back to the point

We can break Sonny's character development down into his interactions with three characters, Rosie, Thomas, and Diesel

~

Rosie: The first Sodor engine Sonny interacts with, he is aloof and standoffish, he obviously doesn't know how to interact with other engines and pushes others away. Rosie, knowing her worth, doesn't give him the time of day, she'll see engines come and go all day who she'll never see again given that she works at Vicarstown.

It's important to note Rosie's personality too, she's very friendly and outgoing. Although Extremely brief, she treats Sonny as she would any other engine, it is Sonny who rejects her kindness. More on this later!

(don't mind the crusty screenshot the wiki doesn't have any good screenshots of these two)

Ok I Had To Get This Out Bc @friendly-emerald-emily (hope U Don't Mind Being Tagged) Brought Up A Very

Thomas: When Sonny meets Thomas, Baz and Bernie don't have control over him for the first time, this is notably the first instance that Sonny is shown speaking, when he's alone and without their influence. He's lost and confused, kind of frozen up like "what now", and Thomas finds him stopped at some points. Sonny of course, at first, rejects Thomas' help, he seems awkward and like he'd like the conversation to be over with, but he genuinely needs help and Finally opens himself up a little.

Sonny is still obviously fronting for the crooks and protecting them, but it's notable how, for the first time without their direct control, he's shown as being very friendly and approachable, then, he goes right back to not talking once he's back with them. They might not have direct control in this scene but the influence they've had on him obviously affects how he conducts himself, it feels as though he's always thinking about what he is and isn't "allowed" to do. Sonny is called useless throughout the whole special and I think he's internalised that.

Ok I Had To Get This Out Bc @friendly-emerald-emily (hope U Don't Mind Being Tagged) Brought Up A Very

Diesel: Finally, the big one, I will try not to rant so much because I've already spoken at length about Diesel and Sonny's relationship, so I'll try to keep it brief.

After the events of the special, Sonny is trying desperately to get in everyone's good graces, we see the true side of him which is friendly, approachable, and selfless, but this goes unappreciated.

Back to Diesel tho, Diesel of course takes advantage of this, but regardless of his intentions, Diesel enjoys spending time with and being Sonny's friend. When Sonny finds out, he's furious, naturally. I think it's notable that Sonny now knows his worth, he's been taken advantage of before and will NOT allow it again, he stands up for himself, as he should.

But what speaks to Sonny's character most is that he's the one to finally give Diesel his second chance. Sonny so desperately yearns for his own, and sees himself in Diesel, giving him the Chance to prove himself. This is basically the first time Diesel apologises on his own accord and admits guilt, though I won't ramble on too much about that as I've already rambled ad nauseam about this being an important part of Diesel's character arc.

Ok I Had To Get This Out Bc @friendly-emerald-emily (hope U Don't Mind Being Tagged) Brought Up A Very

~

Anyhow, getting those out of the way, here's my main point. Sonny's interactions with these three show the different stages at which he develops as a character.

It should also be noted how Rosie and Diesel compare as characters. Rosie is friendly, outgoing, and gives everyone a fair chance. Diesel is rude, aloof, and admits as much himself in Springtime For Diesel that he pushes others away due to how he believes them to think of him, and to upkeep this tough guy persona he's so carefully crafted over the years, he won't even give himself a chance at redemption because it's too hard to work towards it. These two are very much opposites!

Ok I Had To Get This Out Bc @friendly-emerald-emily (hope U Don't Mind Being Tagged) Brought Up A Very

Sonny, similarly, is the opposite to both characters in both interactions, rude and standoffish to Rosie, then friendly and empathetic towards Diesel. He started out under the control of Baz and Bernie, dictating his life by their perception of him, much like how Diesel conducts himself based on how he believes people see him ("Other engines aren't nice to me so why should I be nice to them?") , now taking control of his own life, and working towards his own happiness and redemption. His interactions with both characters symbolise the start and end of his growth as a character!

Ok I Had To Get This Out Bc @friendly-emerald-emily (hope U Don't Mind Being Tagged) Brought Up A Very

Back to Rosie being unfairly treated tho, she deserved so much better. I'm sure she COULD have been worked into Sonny's Second Chance somehow, but, I think I'd have preferred her to have her own episode that focuses on HER, and her relationship with Sonny, it's the least she deserved. No idea if there were any plans for this.

It would have been extremely significant to show Sonny interacting with her again, showing how much he's grown, in contrast to his first interactions with her. It's all well and fine James of all engines apologising to him but they had no established beef, only what we got in SSC, I really would have liked to see Sonny make amends with Rosie, give her a PROPER send off, because how it looks is that she was SO offended and confused by Sonny fuckin growling at her, that she decided to leave indefinitely, lmao?? I'd be confused too!

Anyway, that's a lot to say that I am STILL so upset that Sonny never got more, as stated he really felt like he was supposed to stick around and do More. He's an extremely important character (I am biased), yet one I don't see people give a lot of credit to or acknowledge. TTTE fandom do better I expect a YouTube essay on Sonny on my desk by next week!!

OP!!!!! YOU TOOK A SLICE OF MY BRAIN AND PUT IT INTO WORDS!!!! i love sonny. so much. fav cgi character. i completely agree, it really feels like sonny was made to stay. his relationships with a handful of characters were shown/hinted at, went through an arc, and got a whole episode to himself and a special with a b-plot! like...can you say the same for billy? flora? hank? stafford? its such a shame the series was axed at this point...if only for the sake of more sonny content. as much as i disliked BWBA, i could've put up with it if it meant sonny became a prominent secondary. i would LOVE to see an episode based around him meeting rosie for a second time, and trying to make up for being so rude to her at the beginning. people tend to forget she was the first sodor engine sonny interacted with, no matte how brief. ANYWAY im rambling good art and FANTASTIC analysis op :333 you have my heart <3

Iiiiit's Sonny!!

iiiiit's sonny!!

sonny is such an intriguing little character to me. i really like him, but am very curious about his character and his placement in the series. i'm gonna stick a few thoughts about him (and diesel, honestly, and their interesting dynamic) under the cut!

even though sonny first appeared in the Last Series of the show, he felt like he had been designed with longevity in mind (at least to me!). he had personal character relationships with thomas (positive), diesel (complicated) and james (intriguing). unlike a lot of the characters introduced at the very of the series run, sonny was given these relationships that made you feel he could have his own character growth and also influence other characters and their stories.

sonny and diesel specifically are an interesting pair. diesel had only relatively recently had his minor/major redemption arc in springtime for diesel, but more recent relevant episodes, in my opinion, are diesel glows away & diesel do right. these episodes have a very interesting understanding of diesel which honestly remind me quite a bit of james (which is probably odd to say!). he thinks he is great, and that his presence makes the railway a better place, but in reality… he isn't really helping all that much because his high opinion of himself makes him do his jobs worse than if he just… tried to do them himself. it makes the other engines have a worse opinion of him than if he just talked to them as equals.

this is where sonny comes in. diesel, who has learnt through his past few episodes that he can't make other engines like him by being a nuisance and that he must put his own effort in to do his jobs correctly, is introduced to a new engine who has no preconceptions about him at all. in fact, he seems to enjoy his presence! but this is a whole new thing to diesel, who has not really had a chance to have a new interaction without the other engine involved having been told about his ways~~. while he probably hadn't had toooo many interactions with nia before diesel glows away, it was never implied she was unaware of the way he is, where as this is clearly all new to sonny.

these interactions between sonny and diesel show the two growing close very quickly- neither has really had any close buddies at any recent point, as far as we know. nobody seems to particularly enjoy the company of diesel, and sonny has been implied to have been on his own engine-wise, with only baz and bernie for a while at least. sonny is shown as inherently good- he tries to help james, he tries to do the other engines jobs. diesel as shown as inherently bad- even though he has grown, and we have seen him grow, his first instinct when given the opportunity is to use someone for his own gain. but it is different this time! when diesel causes something to go wrong for somebody else, he apologises without having to make it a whole ~thing~, which was exactly what he struggled with in springtime for diesel. he could apologise, then, but not directly. now he was able to manage it!

sonny managed to bring out the best in diesel, get a direct apology from him ((and also a direct (though sliiiightly reluctant) apology from james)), and get himself into the good books of other engines in essentially one day. though this happens quite a lot in the childrens-morals stories of thomas, there is something about him that brought that out in the characters in a way that felt entirely natural. and i just think that is neat!!

Because most of the episodes I watched and had on home video as a kid were from seasons 8 and 9, Emily's bossiness never stuck out to me. Due to how often the cast threw jabs at one another. I only saw her introductory episode maybe 3 times growing up and then forgot about it for over a decade. Her personality change flew right over my head.

Regardless, she quickly became my favorite character. Not only did I really love her spotlight episodes, but her daydreaming resonated a lot with me due to having undiagnosed ADHD at the time. I couldn't put a name to what I was experiencing, but I could recognize it.

i wholeheartedly agree! i grew up with most of the classic series on home video, but the HiT era eps were the ones airing on TV when i was little. so watching, say, season 5 then going to emily's HiT episodes I didn't notice much difference in terms of her behavior. if emily had been around during more of the classic seasons, some of her "bossy" lines would fit seams into them. as awful as the HiT era's writing can be, "oh, i AM sorry, sorry you didn't listen to me!" will forever be iconic. she killed thomas with that one.

i also thought her spotlight eps for the most part were pretty good. snowplow is iconic, emilys new route made her a sympathetic protagonist, halloween is perfect, emily knows best gives her an interesting conflict with toby, emily and the special coaches does the same with diesel, emilys rubbish is hilarious, and excellent emily really nails her more self righteous traits.

and while i myself dont have adhd, i do headcanon emily as some flavor of neurodivergent. she wants to do her jobs only in the way that she sees fit, sort of like duck, who a lot of people agree is autistic. also throwing in projection lol

thank you for this lovely, well thought out ask anon!
