You donât know anyone with as much energy as you and Sunwoo at the break of sunrise.
âSunwoo!â You lift your legs to your stomach, stifling your laughs down by clasping your hands over your mouth, âWait wait waââ
In response, your husband did everything but your request, continuing to bury you both underneath the white duvet and tickling the sides of your body, âIâm not the one thatâs going to wake our little princess up!â He responds between your kicks and squeals, your happiness radiating back to him.
Just a few minutes ago in the warm morning, you still slept soundly in your bed with Sunwoo. Your face hid from the moonlight at night and the sunlight in the morning by pressing your forehead near his collarbone, and Sunwoo would keep you there with his hand on the back of your head. Sunwooâs other arm snakes below the side of your waist on the bed and his hand on your lower back brings you intimately closer to him, caging you in his loving embrace. You, very much enjoying being the small spoon, had both your hands on his chest, occasionally clenching his loose shirt in your sleep to subconsciously confirm to yourself that your husband was still near you. Sometimes, when your hands would hold onto his material so hard to the point where the backside of the collar tugs him awake, he would dip his head down and kiss your eyelids, nose, forehead, and cheek before finally landing on your lips softly and comfortingly to make you relax back into your sleep.
Closer to the current time, Sunwoo wakes up to the unusually loud chirping of the birds outside the window behind him. However, his frown and frustrations all disappear when he sees his wife still sleeping soundly beside him. No one would be able to fully understand the amount of love that Sunwoo holds for you. Ever since you took his hand in marriage, waking up next to you quickly became his second favourite, most cherished, most anticipated thing that he would look forward to; a far second to your kisses and the way you kiss him lovingly each time. On the days when one of you would be too worn out from the dayâs activities, your body would give up first. Even though it hurt to be going to sleep alone on the cold and big bed, you both knew that at some point in the night, the âI love youâ whispers directed at each other would never fail to put a smile on your faces.
âHmmmâŠâ Your husband hums to himself, closing his eyes once more and pulls you closer to him. His smile widened at your shampoo's familiar scent, and he couldnât help but press his lips to yours, âBubs.â
The deep giggles from across you finally made your eyelids lift, your eyes still squinting from both the light and the tiredness that is still in your system. You groan at the continuous kisses that started from your plump lips, now trailing up to the tip of your nose, your eyelids and back down to your jawline. The way you would attempt to hide your blush by turning over to the other side would be the start of the early morning chaoticness between you both.
Going back to the first dialogue, Sunwoo resorted to tickling you, still pressing light kisses to every part of your exposed skin that his shirt failed to cover properly. It started from your face, collarbone to your shoulder, and you continued to try to contain your laughter to avoid waking up your daughter in the nearby room. You tried to reason with Sunwoo to let you out of this situation alive, using your child as an excuse, but your husband only smirks more at your useless attempt.Â
After all the tossing and turning in the bed, you were clearly out of breath, unlike Sunwoo who undoubtedly still had more energy to get some radiant chuckles to escape from your pretty lipsâto listen to your voice that he loves so dearly and very much. Managing to finally get a break, you lay flat on the bed. Needless to say, your hair is a mess all over the mattress, some over your face which Sunwoo lightly sways away. There were no more signs of playfulness in your husbandâs eyes, especially not with the way he crossed one leg over your frame, his knees now directly next to your hip bones, trapping your lower body as he looked at you with longingness and love.Â
Sunwoo just smiles at your beautiful face and his hand automatically slides up from your hips, lifting the cotton material to place his veiny hand on your stomach. âBubs.â He finally breathes out when you manage to hold his hands, your thumbs soothingly caressing the back of his hands in response.
âHmm?â The skin contact from the pads of his fingers starting from your shoulder is barely recognisable but you are aware of how he eventually reaches your tired arms on the side of your body. Still keeping eye contact with you, Sunwoo feels the wedding ring on your hand, caressing the diamond he worked so hard for. Itâs proof of his love and physical promise that he will stay with you until your last breaths, and the simpler, silver band around his finger that lays on your exposed stomach, is your love and promise to him.
The scene, the way that Sunwoo looks down at you at this moment, is highly familiar. It was the same look he gave you on the night of your honeymoon. The memory flashes through your mind, the light pink blush sweeping on the surface of your cheeks, and your heart beats erratically. Amused at the effect that he had on you, Sunwoo raises one eyebrow, simultaneously on the same half of his face, the corner of his lips lifting as well. A surge of confidence overflows you, grabbing both of Sunwooâs hands without warning. Sunwoo didnât back away from your figure, watching carefully at the way your pretty lips parted to let out a soft moan and a âgood morning, handsome.â greeting. Not long after, you closed the gap between your mouths, not to kiss him, but to feverishly run your tongue across his bottom, plump lip.
âSunwooâŠâ Your voice calls out to him after and he uses a bit of force to tear your hands apart to intertwine your fingers with his, lunging forward to push you back on the mattress and pinning your hands up next to your shoulders.
âGod, I love you so much.â Before you could even repeat the same words to him, Sunwoo dives into the crook of your neck and you whimper in pleasure when you feel the surface of your skin between his teeth, âIs this alright?â
You shut your eyes first before mumbling an answer, âM-Mhm.â It motivates Sunwoo to further paint your skin in the shape of his lips. The satisfying feeling makes you squirm under his unrelenting but still gentle touch. You whimper further as a response, your fingers tightening and your toes curling. When Sunwooâs mouth lands on your left collarbone, you would tilt your head to the right, automatically giving him access that he gratefully accepted.
âDo you remember this?â Sunwoo manages to gasp out, his warm breath hitting your now slightly wet skin due to his intense feelings, âThe night that you vowed to be mine. The physical marks that you couldnât fully get rid of for two whole weeks.â
How could you ever forget?Â
Thankfully, there was no need to wake up earlier or use makeup as your blouses always covered the evidence. Thankfully, Sunwoo was also nice enough to keep it within an area that would be easily covered with most of your wardrobe outfitsâminus the spaghetti straps and lower neckline dresses which would drive him absolutely wild.
Sunwoo remembers all the marks that he made around your chest and neck area on that night because heâs thought about it: he wanted to place the marks that would just be hidden behind your work clothes but just enough that when you both were back home, the lightest tug would reveal the masterpiece that you let him put the night(s) before. The strategic plan made it easy for Sunwoo to recreate the marks and for you to focus on the parts of your skin that he is focusing on and will focus on.
But this time, it was harsher, more passionate, more loving. Sunwoo has been craving this moment with you, and even after he finished making his usual marks, he continued to trail upwards where he knew you would mewl and gasp at his touch. The new sensation knocks the air from your lungs and you desperately beg for Sunwoo to continue his act.
You cannot believe that a second ago, you thought you were completely out of breath. Because if the earlier events really did make you feel out of breath, then you didnât know how to describe this one.
âBubs.â You took note of the series of exhales on your neck that slowly but surely calmed down. Even with your eyes still shut, you can still make out the shadow above you, âYou alright?â Sunwoo releases his hold on both of your hands, relocating his palms on the sides of your neck, caressing the underside of your jawline and a longer, passionate kiss that muffles the remnants of your deeper pants from before.
âMore than alright, love.â When you open your eyes, the darker look in his eyes from earlier is completely gone. Now, only heart-shaped sparkles reflected the windows of his soul and you would both argue to each other that the other was the reason who put them there, âAre you alright?â
âOf course I am.â Sunwooâs face closes in on yours once again, leaning his slightly wet bangs on your exposed foreheadâitâs obvious that you both couldnât get enough of each other. The anterior side of his forearm rests next to your face to properly balance his weight as he admires his wife. His other palm cups your still-warm cheek, âHow could I not be when I have the smartest, kindest, prettiest and sexiest woman here? And guess what?â He buries his fingers underneath your hair strands, âSheâs mine.â
âYouâre such a flirt.âÂ
âYou love it.â
âYouâre right.â Slowly wrapping your hands around Sunwooâs neck, you pull him to give an innocent kiss, âI love you.â
You allowed the calming atmosphere to fill you both, tilting Sunwooâs head to lean his still-warm forehead on yours, the tips of your noses rubbing against each other as you both smile gleefully. The birds continued to sing their songs to each other, most probably waking up your neighbours and any houses with thin walls like your own.Â
âMumma!â
The couple quickly scrambles at the distressed screaming. The father jumps back on the bed, scurrying to hide his body inside the blanket with widened eyes on the freshly made marks that were growing darker and more evident by the second, âB-Bubs, your neck.â
Your hands fly to your collarbone, your own eyes wide at the realisation, âOh shit.â Both of you knew that there wasnât much that you could do, so you just opted for the fastest, but unfortunately nowhere secure, way of hiding the remnants by pulling the back of Sunwooâs shirt to make the front neckline higher until it reached the base of your neck. You sat down on the excess fabric that you made to secure the new neckline in place, just in time for your four-year-old to burst through the door.
When your only child finally steps into the room with hurried steps, you take notice of her white fist around the bunny ear of her favourite plush. The snot runs down her nose and her reddened philtrum tells the couple that she has been wiping her nose for a while. The light grey fabric of the raccoon onesie that she had been matching with your husband now looked darker as the waterfall from her eyes continued to fall onto the fabric. The evidence of the stress that the younger girl showed to her parents made you both gasp in surprise.Â
Sunwoo springs into action quickly, kneeling in front of his daughter to get to her eye level, âWhatâs wrong, princess?â He takes hold of her shoulders, gently applying some pressure to make his presence known to his little girl, âDid you have a nightmare?âÂ
She only nods furiously as a response, leaping forward for comfort in her dadâs arms. The bunny hits the back of Sunwooâs head due to the force of the little girlâs arm swing, âI-I think there is a monster in the room! I heard mumma scream!â She wails, her shuddering lips pressed onto the top of Sunwooâs shoulder.Â
âOh no no no, baby.â Sunwoo soothes your daughter who continues to let out broken wails and cries, drenching his shoulder in the process, âT-That wasnât what you thought it was.â His heart swells. On one part, it was the admiration of the fact his daughter loves his wife. The other part was the nervousness that the thin walls did not keep the privacy of his acts within their four walls. âPlus, dadda wonât let anything happen to mumma.â He pushes the thought away for now, hearing the bed creaking behind him, âSee, look?â With this indication, your daughter lifts her head to see you approaching the little family not too far away from bed.
You still had one hand behind your back to pull the shirt. But, you made it to the little huddle, tucking the shirt under your thighs before kneeling beside Sunwoo and running your hand over your daughterâs back. âMumma is alright, baby.â You spread your arms open and your daughter lets go of her dad to run straight into her mumâs chest.
You readjust the heartwarming position by wrapping an arm around your daughterâs waist, tilting her body to the side and quickly tucking your hand behind her knees, letting her sit down on your own two knees as comfortably as you can, âA-Are you really okay?âÂ
The arm around her waist is now around her shoulder to make sure her body doesnât slip down from yours. âI really am okay, baby. Thank you so much for worrying about me.â You continue to reassure her, pinching her cheek and successfully putting a wide smile back on her face.
Sunwoo sighs out in relief, the deep exhale from his body gaining your attention. From the corner of his eyes, he sees your frown and the disapproving shake of your head. In response, his lips inaudibly moved in all kinds of shapes and sizes, and his hands flew around in the air to emphasise that he was just as stressed as you were. You squint your eyes in response, your pupils darting to the four walls that made your bedroom, and Sunwoo nods in defeat as he understands fully what you mean.
You thought it was all over, the sun bright and happy along with your now composed family. But it was just the nature of children to be curious about everything they see. Your daughter speaks up once again, asking about the now bright red prints on your collarbone, even pointing to the ones visible to her. Sunwoo responded to her act first, cursing under his breath when your wide eyes met his mischievous smile.
âKim Sunwoo!â

âSissy, wake up!âÂ
You were jolted awake by your little brother, who was violently shaking your entire body as you groaned in annoyance and lifted your bedsheets above your head in hopes that he would leave you alone. But you have forgotten that he was a wild and energetic fourteen-year-old teenager, and there was no way he was giving up that easily.Â
As your brother pulled your bedsheet off you, your eyes squinted, and you were about to curse at him out loud before he eventually beat you to it.
âItâs Christmas Eve, sissy! Uncle Ben has already left a note on the dining table, and we must start before the clock strikes midnight!â Your brother announced out loud before running out of your room back to the living room downstairs.Â
You sighed before pinching your eyebrows together, trying to make sense of your surroundings and what your brother had told you moments before.Â
It was that time of the year for your annual family tradition. Your uncle has always been into supernatural and playing detective. He would often devise a different scenario where he would get you and your siblings to solve the puzzles or cases before you would eventually earn a Christmas present from him. He had a different scenario in mind every year and was full of ideas to ensure each year stood out.Â
Not only were your siblings encouraged to participate in the hunt, but he would also get your neighbour next door to experience every year, and he had done so for the past decade.Â
Your best friend, Kevin Moon.Â
It was a joy to have him aboard, especially when he had the wits and brains to help crack and solve most puzzle pieces or clues in your uncleâs little game each year. Because of that, your uncle has taken a liking to him, eventually pairing you guys up, often thinking that you both would end up great as a couple.Â
Which isnât something you were totally against if you were to be completely honest.Â
You liked him a lot, and he has been your best friend throughout middle school up till university. He has always been someone you could always count on and gave you the support you needed.Â
You just werenât sure if you liked him more than just a friend at this point.Â
Trying to shake away all of the unnecessary thoughts, you quickly rushed down to your dining hall to find the letter that your uncle always left on the table the night before when all of you were asleep. However, you froze as you saw that your brother was already holding one in his hands, reading it internally while another was left on the table.Â
âOh yeah, I forgot to mention that uncle made two separate invitation cards and that on the table is specifically just for you and Kevin-hyung next door,â your brother said half-heartedly before he walked out with his invitation, getting ready to get all geared up before heading out the door. You suspected Uncle Ben had probably given him some scavenger hunt games again, given the looks of your brotherâs outfit and the big shovel he had just brought out the door seconds ago.
As you diverted your attention back to the invitation card on the table, you slowly picked it up before opening the envelope and pulling up the letter tucked within.Â
Oh, Uncle Ben, what exactly have you plotted for us this Christmas?

âYour uncle must be nuts going all out for Christmas this year. He mustâve been itching to get this yearâs theme out as soon as possible, donât you think?â Kevin questioned you while chuckling at the side, trying his best to hide his uneasiness.Â
But that was when you didnât respond and quietly began looking for clues; that was when Kevin knew that it probably wasnât a joke this time.Â
âThereâs no actual dead bodies, right, Y/N?âÂ
When you quickly skimmed through the entire letter, your eyes widened at the envelope's contents. You wasted no time and hurriedly scurried out the door to Kevin right next door. With a few knocks, your best friend was out with a hot mug of cocoa, with his hair slightly ruffled, indicating that he had just woken up not too long ago. His eyes widened as he did not expect you to be on his doorstep this early in the day, and he was a bit embarrassed with how he looked.Â
Deep down, you wanted to tell him how he looked absolutely adorable and how you would snuggle up on the couch with him for the holiday seasons, but there was no way you would admit you had a crush on him just yet.Â
Shaking off your initial thoughts, you quickly redirect your attention back to the envelope, trying to fill Kevin in with all your uncle wrote on the invitation. He had the same initial response that you had, thinking that this was all some sort of sick joke. All while he was getting ready by changing his pyjamas into a cosy sweater sufficient to last till the destination, you couldnât help but spare a few glances back at him a few times to take a sneaky little peak at his toned body.
He worked really hard during the summer anyway, and you have seen how he basically went from being all skinny and slim to being toned and bulky within the span of half a year, and you couldnât stop ogling at the sight whenever you saw a little skin from him.Â
But again, you would not admit that to him just yet.Â
As soon as he was ready to go, you both took the pathway down to the written location as the sky quickly turned dark due to the winter season. By the time you both arrived at the entrance of the abandoned house, you needed to grab the torchlight hidden within your sweater and turn it on to navigate the place.Â
As you both opened the front door with an awful creak, you were met with nothing but complete darkness. The power lights were completely cut off so there was no chance of even having a little bit of electricity within the premises.Â
There was this eerie feeling in the air that neither of you could describe; it almost felt like a little haunted house, as much as you did not want to admit it. But given the details that Uncle Ben has written in the envelope, that spooky and sinister feeling youâve had was valid, and it would probably remain this way until the both of you could crack the case open.Â
âTo answer your question, Kevin, I really hope we wonât be stumbling upon any dead bodies too. Itâs the Christmas holidays, goddamit,â you spat, still thinking that Uncle Ben was totally out of his mind with this whole dilemma that was going on right now.Â
âWell, weâve lived in this neighbour for a good decade now, and never in my life have I heard about a Madam Nee Nee residing in a house right at the end of the road and was actually murdered without a trace,â Kevin replied worriedly, thinking that this whole situation is slowly getting much creepier by the minute.
As much as you wanted to agree with the male, you have heard something or two about Madam Nee Nee through your uncleâs stories. All you knew about her was that she was the one who would often bake cupcakes for the children across the streets and would pass them to Uncle Ben so that all of you were able to get your hands on them every Christmas.Â
Those cupcakes were indeed one of the best you have ever tried in your entire life; they were not too sweet and were just enough to fit everyoneâs liking and taste buds. It seemed as if Madam Nee Nee knew exactly what each childâs favourite television show was as she would make an effort to pipe and decorate each cupcake exactly as each character looked. You would often get your favourite Tinker Bell design, and she would alternate between the different fairies each year, while your younger brother often got his favourite DC superheroes.Â
But there was only one problem: you had actually never met the baker herself, and each time you tried to bring it up, your Uncle Ben would often tell you that she was too busy delivering the goodies to the other children out of town.Â
In other words, you didnât really know if you could trust Uncle Benâs words on whether such an individual really existed and if this whole murder case was actually a reality or not.Â
Regardless, you were not going to get anywhere if neither of you was going to make progress in solving the riddles that your uncle had made specifically for you two, adding onto the fact that you really did want to get your hands on the presents as your uncle always knew exactly what you liked.Â
Hence, you and Kevin moved forward and deeper into the house as you both tried to see where or what could potentially help you both get a kick start on the investigation. Suddenly, the doors behind you both slammed shut with a loud thud, and you both were now in complete darkness, heavily relying on the torchlight you brought to navigate the house.Â
âWeâre really doing this right, Y/N?â Kevin asked as he grabbed your wrist to drag you closer to him, making sure that you both stuck together, especially in the given circumstances. Not going to lie, your heart skipped a beat with that sudden gesture of his, and you prayed that he was unable to hear that loud thumping noise coming from your chest, given how silent the whole place was, to the point that you were able to hear a pin drop if there ever was one.Â
âY-Yeah⊠to face Uncle Ben and get our hands on the gift. And besides, we could always have a little fun mystery for the holiday season.â

After ten minutes, you both arrived at the house's second floor. You both tried your best to scavenge through the bottom floor, but there wasnât much you found that could potentially help with the investigation.Â
So here you both were, slowly taking your steps up the old wooden stairs that creaked with every single step, making the uncomfortable feeling you have had since stepping into the house a lot worse than before.Â
Thankfully, Kevin stuck close to you and took the lead in front, where you naturally held onto his sweater from behind, which caused him to turn behind for a second and offer his hand to you instead. You stared at him blankly at first, blinking your eyes a few times to see if you werenât hallucinating, but he eventually linked his hands with yours and pulled you slightly forward.Â
You were thankful that the electricity was out in the entire house, and Kevin held onto the torchlight and shone the pathway in front of him instead; you definitely did not need the male to know how red and flushed your face was right now.Â
As you both moved forward, you eventually stepped onto something firm and hard, causing you to stop in your tracks, nudging Kevinâs elbow to shine the light directly onto your feet.Â
You truly wished you hadnât done that at all.
A severed hand was situated right below your new pair of white shoes, and a little blood splatter was visible around the corners of your shoes. You immediately screamed and took a little jump back, causing you to cower into Kevinâs arms immediately. His eyes widened at the sight, and he tried his best to calm you down by rubbing your back with one of his hands while the other continued to shine the torchlight all around the room.Â
And there it was: another severed hand, located close to what used to be the fireplace.Â
âTh-This must be a jokeâŠâ Kevin muttered, not wanting to accept reality and thinking, âthis was all a dream.â
It couldnât be real.Â
There havenât been any reported murder cases around town for the last thirty years. In fact, your town has been regarded as one of the safest in the state for the past decades, and it is also known as the best town to reside in. Whatever situation you both were in now must be wholly made up by your uncle, who was always full of surprises.
âŠright?Â
That was until Kevin redirected the light source towards the fireplace above, where there were clearly a few picture frames damaged through time or by someone. As you both began moving closer to examine them, you noticed they all had one thing in common.Â
All of them had the same person cut out from the pictures themselves.Â
Three picture frames stood above the fireplace, each depicting a family of five smiling brightly as if the world was free from all sorts of nightmares and misery. At least it was before. Something must have happened for whoever removed the person in question from the picturesâperhaps it mustâve been a bad memory for them, or that person is probably no longer associated with them.Â
You slowly moved close enough for you to be able to examine it well, gently wiping off the dust from each frame with your thumbs to see who exactly was the family in the old pictures. You didnât recognise them at first until you squinted your eyes and saw the famous signature on the bottom right of each frame.Â
It belonged to the Jamaisons; the very first family that moved into this town many years ago.Â
From what you have heard about the tales from your uncle, they were the ones to be grateful for as they built up and raised the town's reputation as it is known today. Their family have since then lived for generations, constantly passing down their legacy for years until the last heir passed on without a successor ten years ago.Â
As everyone has been told, the very first generation of the Jamaisons was a family of four: a dotting father, a loving mother, and a set of twins. But then, who was the mysterious missing cut-out person from the pictures? Did they have another sibling they have kept secret for years, and nobody knew about them? And if yes, why did they do that?Â
Countless questions are pondered within your mind, and you canât help but want to dig much deeper to discover the truth.Â
âKevinâŠhow much do you know about the Jamaisons?â
âAs much as they have taught us in the textbooks. Why?â
âI have a bad feeling about thisâŠâ You muttered, slowly showing and telling Kevin about the missing person from each picture.Â
His eyes widened too, and you could tell he had the same thoughts as you.
âYou donât meanâŠâ
âI really hope it isnât true. Why would Uncle Ben even want us to meddle with their history if it was? Does he think we were detectives that could solve a potential murder case that was decades old?â You questioned, tugging his arm around you even tighter.Â
He pondered for a bit before answering. âWhy not? I have always wanted to go to an actual crime scene.â
âKevin Moon, this is serious,â you firmly reminded him.Â
He sighed before giving you a little smile back. âI know, Y/N. Well, I guess thereâs only one way to find out then.âÂ
Along with your friendly little neighbour, you both begin scouring through the bookshelves, hoping to find any potential records that could prove that they had someone else in the original line-up of the family.Â
However, all of your luck was pointless as there was zero to no evidence proving that the missing person from the pictures existed. It was as if the family themselves had erased whoever it was to the best of their abilities.Â
You groaned as you ran your fingers through your hair. âUgh, I guess weâre back at square one again.âÂ
âI wouldnât be so sure if I were you,â Kevin responded, which caused you to turn your head towards him to see that he was pointing towards the empty room across the room, where the door slowly creaked open.
You were sure that the doors were closed tight when you both made your way up an hour ago, and now you were witnessing the door slowly pry open by seemingly nothing.Â
Oh hell, there is no way ghosts are real.Â
âDo not say the g-word, I swear,â you immediately placed one of your fingers directly onto Kevinâs lips, preventing him from saying it out loud.Â
âNot until we go check it, Y/N.â
âCan we justâŠnotâŠâ
âI think you know what the answer to that is.âÂ
You rolled your eyeballs at Kevinâs words; you knew there was no way you both were leaving this place until you found the answers to the case. Without a choice, you reluctantly allowed Kevin to drag you along step-by-step as you both got closer towards the room.
If you were in an actual horror movie, you were pretty sure there would be creepy and high-pitched violin sounds playing in the background right now. The siren by your ear was beginning to resonate aloud, causing you to have a slight headache while you were trying your best not to shit your pants at this point.
As you were a step right before entering the room, your grip against Kevinâs arm tightened, giving him the signal that you were having second thoughts and would gladly dash right out of the house right now. But he returned a little rub on your palms with his, telling you that everything would be alright and that he was here with you.Â
With one final gulp and nod, you both took that long-awaited step into the room, when you were met with your worst nightmare.Â
You have never told anyone about how your deepest and darkest fear was about how you once had this dream where a black mass consisted of a white face with a lipped mouth paired with large black eyes used to lurk at the corners of your room watching you sleep. You eventually got terrified to the point that you would think about it all day, which then interfered with your daily routine.Â
And it was the same nightmare that stood right in front of you, slowly expanding as it crept nearer towards you both as if it was going to swallow you up as a whole.Â
âNoâŠplease donâtâŠâ You whimpered.Â
Before you could even think straight, the huge mass eventually engulfed Kevin, and he was gone within a second. Just like that, the mass turned in your direction, approaching you slowly as you took a few steps back each time.Â
With one final huff from the mass, it quickly expanded one last time before jumping right onto you, slowly dissolving your entire body and turning it into the mass just like it was.Â
You were helpless, and you eventually felt your entire body go numb as if it was all over and done for.Â
Before you were taken over by darkness, you slowly peered your eyes upon the doors, noticing a bright white figure approaching you before everything was a blur.

âSissy! SISSY WAKE UP!!â
You immediately jolted awake with that scream coming from the side of your ear, drenched in sweat, and your eyes widened as you tried to calm your fast breathing down.
âWhatever the nightmare you have been having since last night, it must have been a wild one I must say,â your brother responded as he slowly grabbed a cloth to wipe your sweat away.Â
âN-Nightmare? What are you talking about?â
âDo you really not remember anything at all? You have been sleeping for the entire day yesterday! You have been tossing and turning in your sleep, mumbling incoherent words as you broke out in sweat.â
What? That canât be.Â
You slowly looked down to see your hands trembling before moving them to your face, trying to take in everything your brother had just told you.
âWhat about the scavenger hunt, then?âÂ
âScavenger hunt? You mean Uncle Benâs?â
âY-YeahâŠwhat happened to it?â
âWell, you were in bed for the entire day and wouldnât wake up, so you actually missed the whole thing,â he bluntly replied.Â
That canât be true. You remembered walking down to the kitchen table and grabbing the envelope placed neatly on the dining table, which shocked you as you read the contents.Â
âUncle Ben came up to check on you, though; he said it was fine to let you continue to sleep since you were probably exhausted with finals.â
NoâŠthis is just not making sense at all.
Wait.
âKevin! Whereâs Kevin?!â You screamed at the top of your lungs as you grabbed your brotherâs shoulders, shaking them vigorously.Â
Your brother stared at you as if a ghost had possessed you because the next thing that happened was that you immediately jumped out from your bed and dashed towards the front door.Â
You speed ran through your open gates right towards your neighbourâs front porch, banging on the door, not caring if you were creating a scene. You needed to know if he was doing alright and in one piece.Â
After a few seconds, the doorknob eventually turned and the door was opened. There stood your best friend, exactly like he was the day before when you went up to him to talk about the strange envelope Uncle Ben had left specifically just for you both.Â
Well, supposedly, at least.Â
It wasnât unusual for you to come banging at Kevinâs door in the middle of the day, as you have done it multiple times. What he did not expect was that you would immediately dive into his embrace and begin sobbing into his sweater.Â
âY-Y/N? Whatâs wrong? What happened?âÂ
You couldnât even give him a proper answer as your tears poured profusely. You were glad to see that he was fine, still in one piece and unharmed.Â
âThank GodâŠTHANK GOD KEVIN!!!!âÂ
You were not budging an inch, and Kevin only did what he knew was best at the moment, returning the hug and slowly caressing your back as if to calm you down. He eventually rested his lips on your head, leaving you little kiss.Â
After what seemed like a couple of minutes resting in his embrace, you eventually pulled away and cupped his face with your palms, gently caressing his cheek as you looked at him lovingly.Â
âKevinâŠpromise meâŠyouâre never leaving my sight again.â
He chuckled. âWhy would I? Y/N, you know I would neverââ
âPlease, a little pinky promise?â You begged, and Kevin could never resist that little puppy doe eyes you have.Â
He smiled before he eventually leaned down and connected your lips with his. Your eyes widened upon the contact before you eventually eased into the kiss seconds later, slowly wrapping your arms around his neck to deepen the kiss.Â
When you both eventually broke off for some air, there was this surge of adrenaline within you, and you felt your face heat up quickly, causing you to duck your head down as you cupped both cheeks to cover up the redness away from the man.Â
Kevin could only laugh at that little sight. âCome on, Y/N. Itâs not like I have not seen your iconic red-flushed-tomato-like face before.âÂ
âItâs not iconic, and whatever that was wasnât necessary at all,â you pouted.
He took a few moments just admiring how you looked before leaning down and resting his palm on your head. âThat kiss is a promise that Iâll always be yours.âÂ
âEven stronger than a pinky promise?â
âAbsolutely.âÂ
With that, you reconnected your lips with his warm ones again, trying to savour them as best as possible before leaning your forehead against his.Â
âOh, Kevin. You truly are the best thing that has happened to me during Christmas this year.â
âAm I supposed to be flattered by that?â He teased.Â
You sulked for a bit before slapping him on the arm. âObviously, silly.âÂ
With a deep huff, you stretched out your arms before wrapping them back around Kevinâs arm, trying to drag him out of his house and head straight towards yours instead for a cup of hot cocoa.
âSay, why donât we go find Uncle Ben? Iâm sure he might have some other tricks to keep us occupied until unboxing night.âÂ
As you tried your best to pull Kevin with you, you were stunned by him standing still at the front of your doorstep, staring at you with a straight face.Â
âKevin? Is everything alright?âÂ
There was this odd ten-second silence before Kevin eventually spoke up, which actually sent chills down your spine.
âIâm afraid that Uncle Ben will not be coming anytime soon, sweetheart.âÂ
Within a swift motion, Kevin pulled you vigorously back into his embrace, locking you tight with his arms. You then noticed how his demeanour began to change and was completely different from before.Â
You began to panic, shivering even, as you looked into his now-turning hollow eyes.Â
âW-What are you talking about?â
âThat little nightmare you had was a reality, princess. Your little Uncle Ben has been trying his best to warn you all these years, and who wouldâve thought he would actually get you to head towards the murder site yourself to crack open the case.â
âK-KevinâŠyouâre scaring meâŠâ you began pushing yourself away, but it seemed that his grip had then gotten a lot tighter, which was when you began to feel the pain that was slowly travelling across your whole body.Â
âLet me tell you a little story, Y/N. A long time ago, a certain group used to think Christmas was all sparkly and bright. But what if I told you that things would never be the same? That the people around them now think that Christmas is a nightmare. After all, a sparkly Christmas can only happen if there is a drop of blood, right? I think thatâs enough for you to figure things out, no?â
It was. As much as you didnât want to admit it, you knew exactly what he meant.Â
Not only was Kevin your Christmas, but he was also your Nightmare.Â
Just like that, he slowly began leaning down as he pushed your hair on your shoulders towards the other side, leaving a clear opening for him to start rubbing your sensitive skin as he leaned down slowly to the point that his lips brushed against them.
âFrom now on, Iâll always be your Nightmare Before Christmas.â

how blessed i am to have you beside me when real life doesn't work out. how blessed i am to be able to go on the main chat and just be myself. how blessed i am to be able to call you my friends. how blessed i am to be accepted by people over the internet, who ended up supporting me in one of the hardest times of my life.
i love you all. i'm sorry that i'm unable to include everyone but i hope you know that in friendship groups, everyone has an effect on one another. even if person a isn't close to person c, person b may be the reason why you're still in the same group together. we all influence each other and i love you all so much.
i'm so sorry for everything.

"So what? That's it?"
The solemn tone in his voice makes the hues of orange and pink in the sky behind him take away the beauty of the scene you both love. It seemed that even the birds that would usually sing beautifully at this time stopped as soon as you opened the door of your house, knowing well who used his entire fist to bang on your door.
Sunwoo's bangs stuck to his forehead well, showing the physical exertion that his body took to get to your house. His school blouse is half untucked and you realise that maybe he rushed out of gym class in the last period because of his mismatched buttons and how his tie wasn't around his collar properly. His eyes flared with a hint of sadness though the confusion and anger masked most of the emotion behind. Your eyes diverted down to his untied shoelace. Usually, you would scold him and he would give that annoying smile to you, shrugging his shoulders and being completely relaxed whilst answering you with a "You're going to do it for me anyways." Judging by his slumped-over school bag, you guessed that he probably threw it to your 'welcome' carpet as soon as he arrivedâeven though he knew that he probably wasn't considering that you've been avoiding his entire presence for a whole month.
But even when Sunwoo looks at you with that heartbroken gaze straight to your tired, cold eyes, you don't utter any words to him. The slight bounce of your head made him turn his head away, clenched fists beside his body. You also found your arms crossing around your waist, palms hooked around your figure and your fingers wrapped around your body to ground the tears that you knew would flow if you didn't keep telling yourself to 'keep it together'.
"Don't you think I deserve some kind of explanation?"Â
Just from a glance at him, you note the tiredness on his face even with his furrowed eyebrows. Not once did he raise his voice at you even though you can see how he's holding back with how tense his jaw is.
"God, Sunwoo." You exclaim to him with a sarcastic laugh after, "I get that we literally became the best of friends as soon as we met two months ago but shit happens and you can't expect an explanation for everything that happens."
"Of course not!" Sunwoo's voice rises though it doesn't seem to shock you. "Shit happens, I know! But at the same time, I never thought our friendship was so weak and insignificant that you could ignore me for more than a month. I know you read my messages! The app can't show me that but I know!"
"Ok fine, I did!" You spill the truth that you've been holding back. "What are you going to do about it? Theyâre my messages, not yours!"
Sunwoo didn't know how to counter that. Maybe there wasn't a way to counter the statement because it's true. But you both knew that the unresponded messages were only the tip of the iceberg of why Sunwoo finally decided to confront you for your isolation from him.
"What happened?" Fragile and weak, shoulder dropping closer to the ground, "Talk to me. I'm here for you."
And he breaks.Â
The tears that he only released in his bedroom were finally showing itself. He didn't think that it would be infront of you first. He thought that maybe his other friends would see it first but that one tear that escaped was the start of his waterfall.Â
"You wouldn't understand." You slightly scowl at the innocent boy, forcing the words between your teeth, "I mean that wholeheartedly and not from some cliche teen romance movie shit."Â
The venomous response he gets to his genuine question only makes Sunwoo frown further and he verbally starts to express the tears from his eyes. Seeing him cry and swallow down his whimpers struck a chord in your own confusing heart as well.
The truth is that you're scared.Â
You're scared as hell.
You're scared of the fact that even though you met Sunwoo two months ago, you grew so fast to him.
There were days that sometimes he would understand you more than your best friend of five years.
Do you know how scary that is?Â
To connect with someone so fast that sometimes all you want to do after a long day is to text them about all the minuscule things to the bigger things that would make your jaw drop.
To open that messaging app, spam him with short sentences, and feel the guilt of passing the dot beside the other messages that your other friends sent first, to just open your conversation with him first?
The confusion that you finally felt at home with someone so quickly and that you felt that when you never expected it to happen? All you ever wanted from your relationship with others was to be included.
Kim Sunwoo did just that in a span of a month compared to five years.
You would spend nights figuring out how it happened but no matter how much you thought of it, you couldn't find that one specific message and timestamp both in your phone or memories of how you would wake up and just hope for a chaotic message from him.Â
One mutual turned to two, which turned to three and the euphoric feeling increased exponentially. However, so did the fear escalated further when you got included in the group chat with the friends that he had before you both met.Â
You have always been amazed at their friendship. Despite the small age difference here and there between each person, despite using honorifics to still respect that age gap, it never stopped the radiant chaoticness that they brought everywhere they went, in everything they did. Their personalities that are so different but work together so well to the point that it makes you believe that opposites do attract.
Their differing body clocks that would mean that the group chat never dies no matter where the clock hands land. Being able to connect with them, making genuine bonds through all the bullying (that is full of love), heart-to-heart or supportive conversations, relatable life struggles relating to schoolwork and living, fangirling about their achievements in life, asking for help with things that youâre confused about, the fun flirtings that would leave the others speechlessâyou realise that this is all you've ever wanted and the fact that you received it when you were at your lowest guard, scared every single part of you.
The very first few moments when you came, you were jealous of their bond, wondering how they became so close even through their differences. Then, as time passed and you inserted yourself in the conversations, it felt like you were flying across a cloudless sky, feeling reassured that your wings wouldn't get wet from the rain. After, you became scared of your presence with them, scared of ultimately breaking them apart.
But, do you know the irony of it all?Â
You were the one who decided to ignore not only Sunwoo but every single kind-hearted person there. No one pushed that on you. But whenever they would post their photos on the group chat for distribution, reminisce their memories together, or when you would hear one of them talk about it with people outside the group chat, you find yourself jealous and hurt that you weren't part of it all.
Does anyone understand the confusion, guilt, self-hate and pain that it all brings?
"How do you know if I would understand or not if all you've done is left me on read in an app that can't even tell me that?"
Your breath hitches and your voice box only lets out a small gasp. Everything Sunwoo is saying is correct because everything is due to your insecurities and fear that everything will just fall apart. You truly believe in the fact that nothing lasts forever. That belief alone is the reason why you have trouble making friends.
Because for you, why would you put yourself in so much happiness that your cheeks would hurt from the laughter and smiles when you know that everything would end anyway?
But at the same time, your heart is trying to pull you in the opposite direction. Because in a similar logic, if you know that nothing lasts forever, why can't you just accept that fact and cherish him, the memories and the times that you could potentially spend together?
"Sunwoo," right now, you allowed the facts to speak out for you, refusing to follow what you truly wanted, "you have been blessed with the most lovely, encouraging and supportive group of friends. You and me," your index finger points to your chest after pointing at his, "we have experienced totally different friendships."
Sunwoo is beyond confused. Of course, he would be. You've never even given him a chance to understand your experiences. What you did was isolate yourself from him and the group chat that has given you hope that maybe, just maybe, this is your group of people. Your heart broke beyond what you could even comprehend when some of them personally sent a message to you, asking your whereabouts and hoping that you were doing well. On lonely nights as you monitor the cheerful group chat, all you can do is intertwine your hands together around your phone, the tips of your fingers turning white due to the pressure as you hold yourself back from including yourself in the fun conversation.
"Sorry but maybe I'm just not ready."
Sunwoo watches your blank stare, your eyes that used to be so full of glimmer and happiness are now void. He took in the fact that you were probably half-conscious at the current moment as you just stared at whatever was just above his shoulder in the distance but he didn't need to turn around to know that you were not focusing on anything in particular.
He wipes the tears that clouded his view of you before carefully asking, "For what?"Â
Your shoulders rise but they hold their position for a second longer before falling back down, "For whatever this friendship is."
Your eyes catch the way his eyebrows crash together as well as the audible nervous gulp and shaky lips, "Is our friendship just 'whatever' to you now?" The volume decreases with each word in the question.
The heaviness in your heart that you carried the past month started to take its toll on your head and you closed your eyes to focus on the chilling wind hitting your face. Sunwoo watches quietly, still waiting patiently for you to ground yourself back to the present. The boy watches your arms untangle from your chest, dropping back to the side of your body and he finds himself wishing that if he stepped forward and opened his arms, you would reciprocate the same loving action back.Â
But he knew you wouldn't. Not now when you flutter your eyes open so delicately with an emotion that he has never seen from you.
"I'll always love you, Sunwoo.âÂ
These are the words that manage to both break and put the pieces of his heart back together. There is no way he could admit it to you now, especially with how things are going but deep down in the lonely past month that he spent, itâs the exact words that he has been waiting and wanting to say to you as he wishes that he could hear it back from you. Now that he has heard it straight from you, not through written text or a voice message, but face to face, his world starts to rebuild itself slowly.
You both only focused on each otherâs faces like it would be the last time you both would ever be able to do so. You straighten your back, no longer slumping and cowering away in fear now that youâve said the words that have always been on your mind. With your slightly newfound confidence and a somewhat lighter heart, Sunwoo sees a bit of colour start to paint your once-pale skin. Your slightly pink cheeks that are in the same beautiful shade as your lips. Your eyelashes that flutter silently in the cold weather around youâand he finds himself wanting to bring your body in a hug to bring some warmth for you bothâand finally, your eyes that held all the stories, ones spoken and unspoken, the same ones that he would eventually find himself thanking the teacher for assigning your seat next to his.Â
In the silence that held many meanings for you both, you observe your best friend as well. Your neck tilts slightly to accommodate the height difference, watching how some of his bangs are now free from his sweat and are now in a mess due to the wind, his big round eyes that would disappear mischievously whenever he would tease you about something, only to soon have his bright, wide smile mirrored back to your face. You realise now more than ever that you may never see that cute gummy smile of his anytime soon.Â
But you needed to be true to yourself. You needed to figure out your feelings first before you could commit to another friendship that could tear you apart once again.Â
You needed to learn to love yourself again before you could go and introduce yourself to others.
Through your friendship with Sunwoo, though short and sweet but still special, you promise that after this, you will never put someone else in this kind of feeling ever again. Things would change from now on and thereâs very little that you can do regarding your friendship with Sunwoo now, especially when you were the one who made the mess.
Maybe now after this revelation, he wouldnât want to be near you anymore or maybe he will wait for you. Maybe he wonât tap on your shoulder anymore during class when youâre dazing off into the gloomy sky and just let you get in trouble with your teacher who will have called your name multiple times. Maybe as he passes by the hallway, his arms around his friends, he wonât even spare you a glance, reserving his smile for just them instead.
But again, thereâs nothing you can do now. The words have been said and actions regarding the words have already been carried out.
Did you regret it?Â
The shortest and fastest answer: Yes.Â
Maybe you couldâve just come clean and told him how you feel. Sunwoo would then do that thing where you both would walk to the nearby park by the school and listen to your rants patiently, straightening and bending his legs as he sits on the swing to give him a bit of momentum, nodding thoughtfully to your worries. Then after, he would stretch his arm from behind the chains and pat your slumped back rhythmically. Just like every single time after that, you would both go for a bubble tea run before Sunwoo would panic text you about an assignment or homework that he forgot to complete and you would panic with him, helping him through the all-nighter that you both have gotten concerningly used to.
âŠgosh, why didnât you just do that?
If this friendship was going to end anyway, why didnât you take the easier, non-confusing, less painful way for the both of you? Why did you have to drag others through so much heartbreak just because of your cowardice? Why did you have to be so unthoughtful and unfair to everything and everyone that you genuinely love? You don't care if you have to get hurt as long as they're fine.
PleaseâŠjust not them.
You are so unfair, unkind and selfish. He was the one pulling the weight of the friendship and you led him on blindly with that fake smile of yours, pretending that everything was fine. The audacity of you to even wish during the times when you cried alone underneath the blanket that he would forgive you.Â
You wouldnât blame him if he didnâtâthat thought also extended to your other ten dear friends too.
A few more minutes pass and you are the one who breaks the prolonged eye contact after putting the features of his face into your memory. Sunwoo could only let out a solemn smile, his feet planted still on the ground even though his legs shook a little bit and he clasped his hands together infront of him, looking down at the grey pavement of your entrance for the first time since he arrived.
âOkay.â
The words seemed more permanent than both of you liked but it was the only response that Sunwoo could give to you at the moment. He missed the way you dropped your head to face the ground. Your body moves to lean over to one side of the doorframe, both your hands reaching over to clench the white metal to keep your posture and emotions somewhat stable.
The bag that was in your field of vision gets dragged away from your figure and you know from the shadow that Sunwoo is dusting off the dirt, ready to walk away for the dayâfrom the friendship that you ruined. The sun behind him has almost fully hidden itself behind the taller buildings that you would have always thanked whenever you were in your room, wanting to get away from its scorching heat and intense light but now, you wished it would stay around longerâŠjust a little bit longer.Â
But maybe, Sunwoo is your sun and he hears your internal pleading because he steps forward, his everyday school sneakers coming into your view.Â
âWhenever youâre ready, alright?â
Maybe it was your growing heartache and headache but the way he mutters it, just a volume above the singing crickets as the birds retreat their song for the day, seemed genuine. Most importantly though, it didnât seem permanent at all. Itâs almost as if Sunwoo is telling you indirectly that he will always wait for you. To tell you to figure out your internal fight first but that heâll always give you a helping hand and that boba treat if you ever call him for help. To tell you that he will always get you in trouble during class and stick his tongue out if heâs successful. To tell you to stop ignoring him in school now that he is getting some sort of closure from you.Â
Thankful for the memories and comfort, your head rises from the depths of your darkness and Sunwoo shines brighter than the huge star behind him. For what you both know will be the last one in a while, Sunwoo purposely lets out a loud sigh, one that is playful and is accommodated by the upturned corner of his lips before resting his open palm on the top of your head.
âI will always wait for you.âÂ
To his words, the stars in your eyes fell and for once, you were glad that you finally showed your tears to him. You hoped that he would know just how much you are genuinely sorry for all of this. Giving him an actually convincing nod that he seemed to accept. You watch your best friend stuff his hands inside his pocket, turning away from your front door and walking his way back down the stairs to being just classmatesâjust for now.
No more words were exchanged after and everything seems to pass by excruciatingly slow. Neither of you had the courage and strength left in your being to call out for the other anymore. Sunwoo would go back to his friends and you would be left alone but thatâs alright because you love them all. You would gladly kick yourself out of the picture if it meant that there would be no awkwardness or unsettling feeling in the group.
As soon as Sunwoo disappears from your sight, he takes all the happiness and warmth that he would offer to you unconditionally, but you also hope that he left all his worries and frustrations here at your front door. The clicking of the door when you close it is empty and the dragging steps that you take to the other end of the hallway to your room are still heavy. You had no more words for the devil in your head that laughed at you victoriously, the insecurities bouncing from the purple walls of your room as you sat at the edge of your bed.
But when your phone turns on with a notification that you didnât expect, you know that the angel inside your head will be working their hardest to strengthen your mindset. There, visible from your lock screen is a new message from Sunwoo. Between your sniffles, you manage to let out a momentary chuckle at the new profile picture: Sunwoo behind you wrapping his arms around your neck, holding his phone out on selfie mode for the both of you to smile atâitâs the latest picture of you both. Your eyes then divert to the new message, one that would push you to keep going until you could face him once more and be back in his arms:
âIâll always love you too.â
