You watched as sunlight began to peer through the holes of your curtains, the light slightly stinging your eyes. You sighed, staring fondly at the small streaks. You had always enjoyed watching the sunrise, even more so that the world had turned to shit a few weeks ago.
About four weeks ago, a deadly sickness had swept over the continent, eventually reaching all corners of the world. At first, everybody thought it was a terrible flu, because all the symptoms were the same. It always started out with the coughing, and then the fever. Even if you tried to treat it, nothing ever worked. People began to call it the “storm plague”, and people who had it were known as “incurables”.
Then, all of a sudden, a third of the Earth’s population was wiped out because of the sickness.
The doctors had told you that you were different. They told you that you were part of the 0.3 percent of the population that was immune to the storm plague. You were known as a “purity”. A diamond in the rough. Your DNA and genetics were “flawless”, according to the doctors.
Unfortunately, the rest of your family wasn’t lucky enough to be a purity. Your family had been admitted to a hospital a few days prior to their deaths. You had come to visit them, only to see doctors and nurses running to their rooms. You followed the doctors only to see your loved ones lifeless on their beds.
You had left the hospital that day wondering, why? Why are you different? Why are you special?
Why aren’t you sick?
Before the scientists could figure out how this disease killed off so many, the people that had died were coming back to life. The billions of people that had died so abruptly because of the storm plague were suddenly healthy and breathing.
But that wasn’t what the doctors were concerned about. It was because that they had no heartbeat. These people were completely lifeless, no pulse, no heartbeat, yet they spoke and walked around like nothing was wrong?
But a few hours later, those people started to change. They would randomly begin to convulse, their skin paled, and all the colour from their eyes would fade away, leaving nothing but white orbs.
And as quickly as those changes came, they began to attack everything in their path. They went completely insane and tried to kill all the people around them. Even if you only got a small scratch from one, you’d turn into an incurable in half an hour.
You had a run in with one about a week ago, leaving you with a large scar on your arm. But since you’re a purity, nothing happened to you, thankfully.
You were hoping you wouldn’t have to go downstairs again for a while, but you’d run out of food yesterday and needed to get some more. So reluctantly, you picked yourself up the floor and headed over to a small table, where your small gun and knife sat. Sliding them into your pockets and slipping out the door, you walked over to the stairs. You would have taken the lift, but that would’ve made a lot of noise. Plus it’s broken, so you couldn’t anyway.
It was a good thing that the store was just across from the building you lived in, otherwise you’d probably be swarmed with incurables. You quickly ran across the road and pushed open the door to the shop. Walking in, you look around for the fruit and vegetables section, and head over to it once you see it. Picking up an apple, you gave it a quick sniff before scrunching up your face and dropping it in disgust.
Just as you were about to pick up another fruit, you heard a loud clattering coming from behind you. Whipping around, you see an incurable shuffling towards you, and you instantly freeze. It’s clothes were bloody and torn, saliva dripping from its mouth. It walked with the pace equal to a snail’s, and as it staggered forward, you could hear tiny croaking and gargling noises coming from it’s throat.
It’s blind, as long as I don’t make any noises, I should be alright, you thought. Holding your breath, you waited for it to pass you. As soon as it wandered down an aisle and out of your sight, you exhaled quietly and turned around to leave. But as you walked away, your arm knocked an apple off the shelf. You let out a small yelp, twisting around to catch it, but you ended up knocking off more fruits.
A piercing screech came from two aisles down, and you watched in horror as the incurable came barrelling towards you. You hurried to pull your gun out of your pocket, shaking like a leaf. You aimed the gun and shot the incurable in the head once, twice, but it still came at you with full force. Before you could shoot again, it pounced on top of you, knocking the gun from your hands.
You struggled to keep it from biting you, even though you were a purity, that doesn’t make you immune from getting your throat torn out. It pinned your arms to the ground, now the only thing protecting you from it was your legs. You kicked it again and again, trying to get it to loosen its grip on your arms so you could get your knife. But it was getting dangerously close to your neck, jaw clamping down with the force of a metal crusher.
So this is how I die, huh, you thought. Your legs began to weaken, your kicking slowing and losing power. You watched as the incurable opened its mouth one last time, leaning forward to sink its teeth in your neck. You closed your eyes, awaiting your fate.
But it never came. Instead, the incurable collapsing on top of you. You lay there, paralyzed. What just happened?
“Miss! Miss! Are you alright?”
An unfamiliar voice rang in your ears. It was faint, as if somebody was calling your from a distance. You turned your head to see a head of dark hair running towards you. You suddenly felt the weight on top of you being lifted off you, and then a light shaking.
“Hello? Are you okay?” The voice shouted, panic laced through it. In a daze, you looked up at the person it belonged to.
It belonged to a young man, about your age. He had dark hair and eyes, and he looked pretty tall from your perspective. He lightly tapped your face, repeating “miss, are you okay?”, over and over.
“Yeah, I’m alright…” You said softly. He looked at you, raising his eyebrows. “Well you don’t look alright! You just got attacked by an incurable! Come with me, I’ll take you to my friend! He’ll patch you up!” He said quickly, so quickly that you don’t think he breathed once in those four sentences.
“Uh, okay then.” You said. You were in too much of a shock to resist as he picked you up, and carried you out of the store. You realized that you’d left your gun behind, but you didn’t care. You’ve only been ever attacked once, and that had made you never want to go outside again. You two of you were completely silent for a few minutes, before he coughed awkwardly. You slowly looked up at him, and he smiled down at you, letting out a nervous chuckle.
“So, uh, what’s your name?” He asked.
“I’m Y/N,” you responded blandly. “What’s yours?”
“That’s a nice name, Y/N! My name’s Yunho!” He said cheerily. You smiled at his strange happiness. Although you were confused as to why he was so chipper, especially when you lived in a world infested with zombies, you were glad that happiness still existed in this hell.
“That’s a lovely name, Yunho.” You said quietly, a tiny smile on your face. He grinned widely, smiling with a brightness that could rival that of the sun’s.
“Thank you Y/N! That means a lot, coming from somebody I met two minutes ago!” He joked, and you couldn’t help but giggle. You stopped suddenly. How long has it been since you last laughed? You were surprised that you even could laugh. Yunho looked down at you again, and opened his mouth to talk, but he was interrupted by a new voice.
“Yunho! What’s that you’ve got there?” You turned your head to see another man, with silvery brown coloured hair. He was incredibly attractive, and even more so when he gave a mischievous smirk when he realized what Yunho had.
“Ooh, you’ve picked up a girl, Yunho!” He laughed when Yunho flushed a deep red. “Shut up, Wooyoung! She just got attacked by an incurable!” He yelled.
The word incurable instantly wiped the smirk off Wooyoung’s face. His lips parted in an “o” shape, and he turned on his heel and headed into a small building. You looked up at Yunho again, whose cheeks were still dusted with a light pink.
“Thanks for carrying me, Yunho. I think I can walk from here.” You smiled. His head snapped down to look at you quickly, then grinned and put you down carefully. “It’s no problem, Y/N! We have to all take care of each other, more now than ever!”
You smiled once again at Yunho’s positivity. Something about this guy made you the happiest you’d been in a while, and you’d only met him about ten minutes ago. He stepped in front you and nodded towards the building.
“Come on Y/N, let’s go get you fixed up.”
