the show really took pains to indicate to the viewer just how intimately edwin and charles know each other

the constant shared glances where they communicate something unsaid, the borrowing of each other's catchphrases, the way edwin just hands charles things without even looking because charles WILL take it from him, the synchronized movements, both of them (but usually charles) calling out the other for something they habitually do, the references to "incidents" and "debacles" of the past

i think it really drives home how unsettling it is for them when they realize they are still hiding things from each other
