Monty abused his trust and nearly got him and Charles killed. The Cat King manipulated his repressed attraction and leashed him like a pet, keeping him trapped in a town with a murderous witch. All the while, the man Edwin actually loves, the man who has been nothing but kind and gentle and devoted towards him, does not love him back. Not in that way. Something Something Love is a punishment for not having been strong enough to remain alone.

Sooo… here’s another DBDA headcannon: Charles and Edwin both have twin sisters; Charlotte Rolland and Eden Payne, who have been searching for them for over thirty years and five months (the months have been added on as they both died five months after their brothers) and they just hear about Edwin and Charles’ detective agency. They go to hire them and surprise! It’s their brothers who are running the agency.
