About Rain Master’s Name

Rain master’s name “篁” (huang) means “bamboo grove” or “bamboo forest,” in other words a wide field of bamboo. I love the expansiveness this name suggests, but that’s not the only reason I like it.

There are conventions when it comes to traditional female names in Chinese. One of those conventions is that, if a woman is named after some object in nature, it’s usually some sort of flower or pretty songbird that stands for feminine beauty and charm. One example is Jian Lan, who’s named after the gladiolus flower, or the sword lily. That’s why rain master’s name feels pretty special - bamboo isn’t alluring or delicate; it’s not pretty in the traditionally conceived feminine way. However, bamboo is one of Chinese people’s favourite plants.

In Chinese culture, bamboo stands for moral integrity and resilience (because it’s an evergreen plant that’s neither afraid of heat nor cold). Bamboo is hollow on the inside, one could say it’s…not full of itself, so traditionally it symbolizes humility and generosity. Bamboo is able to bend without breaking, so it also symbolizes the quality of being flexible and pliable without being docile.

I guess it’s unsurprising that those virtues that bamboo represents can all be found in rain master. So 篁 is a really fitting name for her that encapsulates rain master’s goodness and inner nobility.
