Ling Wen + The Blackwater Arc

There was a moment right after the Blackwater arc that really had me wondering what we get from Ling Wen over the course of the arc, so here we go.

Ling Wen first appears along with Shi Wudu and Pei Ming in Shi Wudu’s golden carriage, to come get Shi Qingxuan. Here, she’s clearly just as worried as Pei Ming is (in my translation, there is a lot of talk about both of their facial expressions dropping/changing over the course of that scene). Additionally, she’s the last to get back into the carriage, and says this to Xie Lian before she leaves:

Also, I like the detail about her picking up the Wind Master fan here! But this is mostly what I like to call a Siri moment—she’s kind of just providing context and narration. Except this time, she knows more than she lets on, and that continues to be the case throughout the rest of the novel (the main example being when Xie Lian calls her about the Brocade Immortal. Oops).

The next Ling Wen appearance happens when Xie Lian+Co come to help with Shi Wudu’s heavenly calamity. This is mostly another Siri moment, but its placement is honestly a little genius—because of the way it contrasts her following appearance.

For contrast, this is her next moment. It’s quite a while after, but the next time she appears is when the Shi brothers suddenly go missing… and she is freaked out. (The first line here is also her dialogue)

First of all, she’s yelling at other officials in the communication array. I don’t think we saw her do that before this point. And then there’s the line about how “she seemed to change into a completely different person”, when she saw Xie Lian.

Also, the fact that she only asks about Shi Wudu and Pei Ming… she’s got priorities, and I don’t blame her. This also is the last Ling Wen appearance before Shi Wudu dies.

The next we see of her, it’s after. It’s not specified whether she knows that Shi Wudu died or not (which I find a little sad). Anyway, here she’s sending Quan Yizhen to Puqi Shrine.

There isn’t much emotion in that moment, which honestly makes me think she doesn’t know about Shi Wudu’s death (at this point, Pei Ming doesn’t know either).

Then, we don’t see her again until the part that describes Shi Wudu’s funeral.

I do find it interesting that, while Pei Ming is mentioned as being the one who brought back Shi Wudu’s corpse, it’s never explicitly mentioned that he was at the funeral, even though Ling Wen was there. I kind of hope he was… but if he wasn’t, what then?

The last Ling Wen appearance of this arc is the one that made me so curious about her presence during it in the first place. Also… 😭😭

She hadn’t smiled in days. Ok, what if I just jumped out the window, what then.

Anyway, even if Ling Wen isn’t physically present during this arc, her concern and emotion is still there, and it also sets up her character a little more for the Brocade Immortal arc, which directly follows.

I just love her so much. And the three tumors make me sad. (Also, Shi Wudu and Ling Wen’s friendship is my favorite ever.)

I know that now is not the time for this, but everyone in this series is absolutely gorgeous. Like I’m learning about the horrors of the fall of the Wuyong Kingdom, but am being met with some of the most beautiful faces I’ve ever seen.

Ling Wen deserves some cocaine. As a treat. And a lifestyle choice if she is going to continue being the only one in heaven capable of getting shot done.

She also deserves a holiday, and a nap. Several naps. At least one a day, probably more.

My phone autocorrected ‘Ling’ to ‘King’. It knows who gets shit done and who should be the new empresses. It also offered up ‘empress’ first, so my point stands.

I was sort of scared what kind of language the tgcf novels would have. I'm no stranger to harder reads but I'm also very lazy and if I have the choice not to engage too many neurons I will take it. But so far my fears were unfounded.

✅ Mu Qing is cunty to anything that breathes

✅ The Feng Xin vs the terrifying experience of being perceived by women event is ongoing

✅ Xie Lian is still very much the embodiment of the phrase "Fuck It We Ball"

My only critique is I really want to supply The Palace of Ling Wen with at least five duffel bags of cocaine. The girlies need a boost and I don't think the green tea is cutting it anymore.

includes: shi qingxuan convincing mu qing to crossdress with him, a very awkward sleepover where everyone in the xianle quartet invites their best friends and he xuan and shi qingxuan see each other and start making reparations, feng xin and mu qing teaming up to try and win the heart of the crown prince only to also fall for the ghost king, homophobia in the heavenly capital, and much more! (if it gets written idk if i will)

i might just start planning out the sleepover at paradise manor below the cut...

ok so mu qing, after crossdressing with shi qingxuan, invites him

xie lian's like "ok i guess i cant invite sqx who do i invite?" he ends up inviting ling wen, who is relieved for a break, and yushi huang, bc she did help them overthrow the government last time i guess

feng xin has no friends. he invites pei ming in the end because why not

hua cheng invites he xuan because yin yu said no, and hua cheng has no other besties

so the party is xianle quartet, the remaining Cancers, shi qingxuan, and yushi huang

pei ming has the wonderful idea to play spin the bottle, shi qingxuan agrees bc at this point he knows mu qing has a crush on xie lian and hua cheng

xie lian has no idea what spin the bottle is, but shi qingxuan goes first bc hes kinda besties with everyone here (except the ghost king), lands on yushi huang, gives her a lil peck on the cheek. pei ming goes "hey! thats not how you play! you have to kiss them on the lips actually!"

he is ignored.

next is hua cheng, who spins, and thanks to his incredible luck, lands on gege! kisses him on the lips and hands it to he xuan.

he xuan does not spin the bottle.

next is pei ming, who spins it and lands on ling wen. the immovable glare she affixes him with is enough to make him back off. she leaves the circle and goes to sleep on one of the couches at like 11 (there are many couches in paradise manor bc hua cheng needs something to kiss xie lian on)

pei ming complains that he gets to spin again because he didnt kiss anyone, but no one listens bc no one wants to kiss him lol

next up is yushi huang, who lands on pei ming. she starts by wiping off his cheek with a wet towel, her lips barely making contact with his cheek, then wiping off her lips with a different towel. pei ming is very embarassed and red.

then we got feng xin, who is very scared. he lands on he xuan. uh oh. he walks a lil closer. then a lil closer. he kisses his own hand and pats he xuan on the shoulder. the glare that he xuan is wearing is very very very scary. he is very scared. like hes about to pee himself. but at least. he managed it. pei ming doesnt comment surprisingly.

mu qing is next (of course they sat next to each other guys), who lands on xie lian. oh no oh no oh no. he leans over. kisses xie lian very very quickly on the cheek. he is very very very very red and blushing.

yeah mu qing will get murdered if he falls asleep at the sleepover.

now it's xie lian's turn. everyone wants to kiss him for different reasons except he xuan, so of course that's who he lands on.

xie lian knows this is platonic except hes not really friends with he xuan??? and also the tension between he xuan and shi qingxuan has been physically (whats the touch version of audible?), so hes very nervous.

"you dont have to do it if you dont wanna gege"

"yes he does!" shouts pei ming

xie lian kisses his finger and taps the Supreme on the cheek.

yeah, he xuan's debt is getting increased for that.

hot take of the day: xie lian and jin guangyao would have been friends if they'd been written into the same book and placed in a position where they could meet and interact socially without obstacles. i think they would have made each other better and also worse, but in a fun, character-building way, not in a 'let's speed-run being doomed by the narrative' way.
