One of the main reasons I fell in love with sonic is that he's not the stereotypical hero.

Yes he hates oppressors and helps people, but he does it because he genuinely enjoys doing it. He doesn't kowtow to any law enforcement or government. If they get in the way of his pursuit of freedom he kindly tells them to fuck off. He just follows his own moral code and not the laws of this land 😍

But at the same time he is surprisingly humble and doesn't give a shit about being famous or getting money.

He doesn't even have a dead partner/sister that inspired him to be a hero. He just does what he does.

Exactly. Sonics motivations are what we would traditionally consider to be selfish. He is just doing what he wants to do because he wants to do it. He helps people BECAUSE he likes helping people, not because it's the right thing to do or because he has a responsibility or because "he's the hero and that's what heroes do", he just felt like doing it. He likes it. It's fun to him.

And that's WHY he's so humble too, because he doesn't think he was doing anything special. He just did to because he wanted to do it, and so he doesn't think he deserves any praise or special consideration for it.

It's really interesting that so many western writers can't seem to countenance this. They can't wrap their heads around a hero who does heroic things on a selfish whim. They think it's "boring" or "incomplete" in some way, and needs to be "fixed" or "improved" by adding melodrama or interpersonal conflict or whatever. They cannot accept Sonic for who and what he is, and so they feel justified in changing him into something else instead. And that is why their Sonic's always SUCK ASS.
