Of all the people in your class, why did you have to end up with one basketball player in it? Min Yoongi was the only athlete in your class.
You hated sports, hated them with all your heart and moreover, you hated people who played them; they were shallow and self centered and put way too much time into a game. You just couldn’t understand them.
Now, was that a valid reason to hate all sports players? Probably not. You didn’t really care.
Yoongi at first glance didn’t seem like one of those people, and even if you talked to him he didn’t; if it was for his popularity and reputation you might not have even known; but you saw how the girls drooled over him, how even the straightest of guys had do a double take on him. He was gorgeous, you had to admit.
You assumed he was just like the rest of them, probably slept with anyone that threw themselves at him, only to cast them aside after the fact. You assumed that he only cared about sports, failing every other class including this one. And, really, you assumed he had not a single thought in his pretty little head.
This project was going to be excruciating. Simple as that, you’d have to do all the work while he did absolutely nothing.
….
A week had passed, you hadn’t bothered to even communicate with your project partner; you figured you’d just talked to him in the last two days before it was due. Unfortunately that day was today and you were not excited.
You were sitting in an almost empty cafe -his choice- in silence. He cleared his throat.
“You didn’t message me at all so I had no clue what to do.” he said, sounding a bit pissed off. “I wasn’t expecting someone with your grades to be a deadbeat partner but… anyways, I just did all of it.”
You scoffed. “Please. You did not do it all.” you rolled your eyes. “I know your type.”
He didn’t respond, just reached into his bag and pulled out a stack of papers. He slapped it down in front of you. “So…” he said tauntingly. “What’s my type?” he the biggest shit eating grin you’d ever seen as he watched you flip through all the work that he had, in fact, done.
You swallowed the lump in your throat. “You’re a jock… bad grades in every class, only thinks and cares about sports, doesn’t help at group projects, full of yourself, etcetera.”
He chuckled. “Okay… you wanna know your type?” His tone of voice is cruel and mocking; you already accepted that you were wrong about the project but now you wanted to sob. “You, Y/n L/n, are the teachers' pet, trying too hard at literally everything and failing at literally. Everything. You're quick to judge and a bitch to people who have never done anything to you.”
You took a half breath. “Yoongi-”
“We're handing in my version of the project.” He gave you one last spine chilling stare before collecting his things and walking out on you.
….
You’d been surprised when Yoongi texted to meet up the next day, he had been mean about it; though you weren’t surprised. You deserved it. He made it undeniably clear that he wanted nothing to do with you but wanted to make fully sure that neither of you failed this project.
You pulled out your version of the project. “Yoongi…” you said unconfidently, he honestly scared the shit out of you now. “What if we merged our work? Wouldn’t we get better marks if the best parts of both or versions are in the final product?”
He raised an eyebrow. “Yeah… that could work, if we can successfully merge them by monday.”
“I guess we’ll have cram over the weekend.” he made a disgusted face. “Hey! I don’t want to spend any more time around you then you do but we have to get this project done!” you raised your voice, cringing at the idea of spending any longer than an hour with him. He may have proved your impression wrong on the school front, but you were still convinced you were right about everything else.
Should you re-evaluate your assuming ways? Mmm, probably. Were you going to? No.
….
It was a half hour before you had to go meet Yoongi once again. You were talking with your roommate now.
“I don’t know how you can hate him.” She said. “He’s so hot.”
You rolled your eyes. “Because I don’t like people simply because they’re physically attractive.”
“I mean…” she trailed off. “Your opinion of him is solely based on stereotypes, Y/n, you don’t know what he’s actually like.” she gave you a look, trying to inform you that your way of thinking was wrong.
You didn’t care, you were stubborn. Besides, it’s not like she knew what he was like either. “You don’t know him either.”
“But I do know one of his best friends; from what Jungkook’s said, he’s nothing like that.” your roommate paused. “Don’t you have to go now?”
You looked down at your phone. “Shit, you're right.” you grabbed your bag. “See you later.”
Stepping out your front door, you took a breath; you were careful not to breathe too deeply, the air in your apartment complex was rancid. You did take a deeper breath when you exited the building.
You paid no attention to your surroundings, even with the sun setting. The sky was beautiful shades of pinks, oranges and yellows and you were missing it all.
Too wrapped up in your displeasure with another person. How tragic.
It didn’t take long to get to your meeting spot, Yoongi was already waiting for you.
“Hey.” you greeted, fidgeting with your fingers.
He pulled his lips into a line. “Hi.” a shallow huff. “You ready?”
You nodded. “Yeah, let's get this done.” you began to walk towards the cafe door but stopped when you noticed he wasn’t following. “You coming?” you asked quietly as you looked him over.
He had a strange expression on his face, it was gentle and calm. He looked like he was frozen in place. He shook his face. “Uh, yeah, sorry.”
You tilted your head in confusion but followed him into the cafe. You decided to order while Yoongi found a table.
After acquiring said coffee you sat down across from him. “So…” you stopped and cleared your throat. “I looked over the copy you gave and, while I have quite a few points, this-” you flipped to a certain page in both yours and Yoongi’s booklets. “-page. We both said the same things basically, but we worded it differently. This is like one of the most important parts.”
He nodded. “Yeah… what if-” he pulled out a notepad. “-we did something like this.” after writing a few hasty bullet points. Then showed you. “It’s messy right now but we can define that.”
You pursed your lips, nodding unconsciously, and when you looked up at him you caught his eye.
He had that same weird expression and you couldn’t, for the life of you, figure out what it meant. You looked back to your work but his gaze lingered on you.
You tried to ignore it.
….
“I have a problem.” Yoongi groaned, looking towards his friend Jungkook.
Jungkook raised an eyebrow, only looking at Yoongi for a split second. His hands were full currently. “What do you mean?”
Yoongi tched, furrowing his eyebrows. “I think I might like my science partner.”
“Y/n?” Jungkook questioned. “Isn’t she Min-Ji’s super judgy friend?”
Yoongi nodded. Jungkook spoke again. “Dude why? She literally called you stupid.”
“I don’t know… I just- I had this moment earlier. I just looked at her and realized she was the most beautiful girl I’d ever seen.” he bit his lip anxiously.
Jungkook half laughed-half scoffed. “Simp.”
“Says the person that trips over his own feet for her best friend.” Yoongi rolled his eyes as Jungkook glared at him.
Yoongi went silent, he wondered what was wrong with him. Why in the world would he like someone who thought he was akin to an animal? And why had it happened so suddenly?
He had walked up to that cafe earlier that morning fully hating you; for some reason, however, when you showed up he couldn’t help re-evaluate.
You’d gotten a good amount of work done earlier, you honestly probably didn’t need to meet up tomorrow but- yoongi texted you anyways.
Min Yoongi - Hey, we should meet up again tomorrow. To make sure everything is done.
You - Uh, yeah sure.
Min Yoongi - cool, what time?
You - how about noon?
Min Yoongi - Alright.
Typing…
Min Yoongi - so, how are you doing?
….
It’d been a few hours since Yoongi had randomly started small talk with you; you had been weirded out at first but, after the initial shock, the conversation had flowed naturally. You hadn’t stopped since that first message.
You’d been talking about anything and everything, you honestly weren’t even sure what. You didn’t notice the way your ears went red, or the way you were biting your lip.
Min-ji definitely did. “Who are you texting that’s got you so riled up?” she smirked at you playfully and tilted her head.
“What do you mean?” you raised an eyebrow at her.
She chuckled. “Your ears are bright red and you’ve been biting your lip for an hour.”
“I have not! I’m texting Yoongi, why would I be biting my lip!”
“Oh my god! You have the hots for Yoongi!”
“No, I don’t!” She gave you an ‘are you kidding me look’. You scowled back. “I strongly dislike Yoongi.”
She rolled her eyes. “More like strongly like.”
“Min-ji!” you threw a pillow at her and frowned.
She laughed. “What! You’ve been texting someone you ‘strongly dislike’ for three hours.” She put air quotes around ‘strongly dislike’ “Casually.”
You huffed. “Well, regardless, I don’t like him.”
“You tell yourself that, honey.”
And you would. You would tell yourself that.
Until you wouldn’t, that is.
….
Today was different.
Today was different because when you looked at Yoongi, you saw the same gorgeous man you saw everyday- except now, the gorgeous really clicked.
Throughout the entire study time you found yourself taking glances at him, hardly able to tear your eyes away. To say studying had been difficult would be an understatement.
You wondered what Yoongi was thinking- he had seemed to be glancing at you too. Maybe you were reading too much into things.
You supposed it didn’t matter, you were already back at home contemplating your entire existence.
That's when you got another text from Yoongi.
Yoongi - Hey, I know it’s late but can we meet up again. We missed something on the project.
You - yeah sure, where?
Upon receiving his answer, you immediately started getting ready.
Yoongi - I can pick you up.
You quickly responded, saying that was okay- thanking him and sending your address. It didn’t take long for him to get there, or for you to get ready.
“Hey.” he said upon seeing you; he had a soft smile on his face.
You looked at the ground and back up to him, waving. “Hi.” you took a short breath. “So what did we miss?” you asked. Yoongi looked away, rubbing his neck.
He cleared his throat. “I’m gonna be honest… I only said that because I didn’t know how to say what I really wanted to.” you tilted your head. “We didn’t miss anything.”
“So, what did you want to say?” you questioned slowly, holding your breath.
He blinked a few times, his eyes darting to random places before centering on you. “I… wanted to ask you out- like on a date.”
You blanked. “A date?! But I was so rude to you!” you proceeded to panic, realizing you’d just accidentally rejected him. “Not that I don’t want to! I just-” you cut yourself off, going silent.
“Yeah… I know you were rude but, contrary to popular belief, first impressions aren’t always everything.” he said sheepishly. “I just like you.”
“I like you too.” you said- probably a bit faster than you should’ve. Had you even known before you just said it? Not really.
He smiled. “So, how about that date?”
