Gift

I awoke to the smell of something burning, “Fuck…” I grumbled, jumping up out of bed and running down the stairs. I followed the burning smell and ended up in the kitchen, finding a distressed Kylar fumbling with birthday candles. “Kylar…?”

Kylar jumped, dropping the candles. “Wh-what are you doing up?” He asked, frantically picking up the candles. “You’re supposed to be asleep.” I inspected the kitchen as he continued to panic, it was a mess. Dirty dishes everywhere and a burnt cake in the trash. “I-It wasn’t good enough for you, my love.” He explained, noticing me looking in the trash. He was so anxious that he was stuttering and fumbling about.

“I was worried you set the house on fire, so I got up.” I smirked at him, “Were you planning something?” Today was my birthday, and I know he wouldn’t miss it for the world.

He tried to clean up, putting dishes in the sink. “N-No, everything is fine…”

I smiled, he really was trying his best to set up my surprise. “Are you sure you don’t want my help?” I loved the thought he was putting into this, but I didn’t want him to destroy the kitchen in the process.

Kylar fumbled with the dishes, “I-I got it handled, I got a ca-” I held back a smile as he went wide eyed and stopped himself, trying not to ruin the obvious surprise. He dropped the dishes in the sink and started to shoo me out of the kitchen, “Please, my love, I don’t want the surprise to be ruined.”

Laughing, I let him shoo me away. “Ok, ok.” I decided to go back to bed and wait for him to come and “surprise” me. I laid there and played on my phone as noises continued to come from the kitchen. I hope he doesn’t break anything.

Sometime later, Kylar came into the room holding a bandanna. “Come on.” He looked so excited, and I couldn't help but smile. I obliged, standing up and letting him cover my eyes with the bandanna. He carefully led me downstairs to my “surprise”.

Kylar sat me down in a chair and removed the bandanna, “Happy birthday!”

I smiled at the sight before me, a sad cake with messy frosting and candles. “Thank you, Kylar. I love it.”

He beamed, pulling out a lighter and lighting the candles. “Make sure to make a wish.” He sat beside me and began to sing Happy Birthday. His singing was awful, but I loved it nonetheless. He put so much work into this, and I didn’t want to upset him. Once he finished, I blew out the candles. “What did you wish for?” He asked excitedly, no doubt hoping it was about our future.

I smiled, shaking my head. “If I tell you, it won’t come true.” I didn’t completely believe in that, but it was fun to tease him.

He frowned and nodded before getting excited again, “Wait here.” He instructed me before running off, leaving me slightly confused. It didn’t take long for him to come back, holding something behind his back. “I-I got you a gift.”

“Oh, you didn’t have to do that.”

Kylar shook his head and sat beside me, “I wanted to.” I blushed as he placed the gift in my hands. “Go on. Open it, my love.”

The gift was small and crudely wrapped, “Ok, ok.” I slowly pulled off the bow and then tore off the wrapper, revealing a smaller box. I raised a brow, but he gestured for me to open the smaller box. I gently opened the box, revealing a beautiful vial necklace filled with some kind of red liquid. “Kylar, this is amazing!” I wrapped my arms around him, hugging him tightly. “Thank you so much!” I thanked him, kissing his cheek.

He blushed furiously, “ H-Here,” he gently took the necklace from my hands, “Let me help you.” I turned around and lifted my hair out of the way so he could put the necklace around my neck. “There, you look beautiful.”

I played with the vial, the liquid inside sloshing around. “What’s in it?”

“Our blood.” He answered with a big smile, “It represents a bond between our two souls.”
