The month of Thermidor has failed

In the month of Thermidor in the second year a revolution was overthrown and Robespierre and his followers were killed.Leon Trotsky would later compare the rise of Joseph Stalin to the Thermidorian Reaction, and the CIA would consider Khruschev's denunciation of Stalin to be the Thermidor for the Russian Revolution. These are inherently contradictory statements. Findable on AO3 as R_dHerblay, I'm a prolific blabber. And a cunt. Sometimes. This is my derangement hole. BNHA. But also sometimes French Revolution and Dumasposting.

*pops out of vent* Ask and you shall receive (or well. I really fucking wanted to write it and couldn’t stop myself until the story said “stop now bitch”)

It is KINDA MID just warning but like. Man. MIRAI. My guy. Was incredibly fun to write, even if it is incredibly bleak

Sir Nighteye origins

There's like frightening little about Sir and I just kind of can't kill the plot bunny in my head of a young Nighteye having been rejected from all sorts of hero schools and agencies just because like a foresight quirk that isn't super specific probably isn't seen as particularly useful at first or versatile and a school like UA would absolutely not accept a student with that kind of non-physical quirk. I don't think Nighteye went to UA as a hero student if at all.

But like the other detail is that Nighteye kept asking and asking All Might to be a sidekick and like I really REALLY can't kill the idea of a young Nighteye not within the heroics industry accidentally stumbling into All for One's web of secrets and lies and uncovering this pattern of quirks vanishing and quirkiness people going missing and turning up dead and with quirks and this one mysterious string of heroes that rose at similar times as the prominence of those incidents and the connections between them all and then trying SO FUCKING HARD to get All Might to know that he knew and All Might just not fucking getting that this random fucko who keeps showing up and asking to help him is smarter than he thought.

Anyway my point is that I'm writing this fic IMMEDIATELY because I need this in my life. And Sir Nighteye will be trans because I want him to be.

When a character is narratively doomed to incompletion by no fault of their own but simply by being in the wrong place at the wrong time

Y'know the AFO backstory is so funny to me because I have a sick sense of humor yes but also because like mythologically there's a lot of myth about parents eating their children but not so many (to my knowledge lol please correct AND DIRECT me if I'm wrong I wanna read) about children eating their parents. Matriphagy is a trait that is observed in arachnids which I think is fun, All for One has a really large web he's weaved over the years so there's that kind of nice aspect to it but I kind of love that it's also this grotesque thing that isn't done in these grand stories. Like yes cannibalism in and of itself is this great taboo that's happened almost everywhere culturally but a child eating their parent is an interesting subversion of parents eating their children and receiving these grand punishments from destiny as a result.

Destiny looked at AfO and went "dawg what the fuck"

Hello world

I'm so incredibly normal about things I promise.

I like. Wanna figure out a graceful way to put honorifics in my English writing. And like this frustration is so near and dear to my heart because my first language has a formal/informal tense that is fucking. Impossible for me when I'm writing in English because I so desperately need it there. And it works the same vice versa, I struggle translating English to my native language because when and how do you take a decision to change a text in that way and when is it appropriate?

Ack. It's so. It's so difficult because English is not made for that and for me the swapping to the other language just ruins the sort of suspension of disbelief. It takes you out of the immersion. And when you're translating it's always good and proper and I love it when there's long appendices detailing those things out but when you're writing original/fanfiction that is in a different language than the setting or source work it's just such a difficult editorial decision to make.

I've kind of landed on. When you're writing your own thing you should follow the conventions of the language you're writing in (ie, no formal tense/honorifics/specific conjugations if you're writing in English) but still making it clear within the linguistic context of the setting what it would be otherwise.

This is a nuance that's hard to capture and I don't think I'm good at it yet? This is also why I genuinely feel that all translation is impossible without some degree of loss, like there's always a little bit of the original sense you're going to miss. And that's okay, and I accept that, but it SUCKS as a writer. Like I once wrote a short story set partly in Russia and it's INCREDIBLY HARD to capture the sense of familiarity in nicknames and patronymics in English, even if you just use them straight up. My friend who is a native Spanish speaker INSISTS that magical realism just does not work in English because there's an inherent loss. I can't enjoy translated poetry. It's one of those things.

Anyway all of this is to say I am rocking back and forth on the floor because man writing is so hard writing convincingly within a setting where you don't speak the language is hard writing in your second language is hard translation is hard everything is hard.

Just don't write I think.
