a lot bugs me about the "christopher colombus was secretly jewish" thing thats been making the news.
primarily the timing of it: in a time where antisemitism is rising, where many are considering jews to be (primarily white and european) colonizers, here is one of the most famous colonizers of all, christopher colombus, a secret (always secret; those sneaks) jew!
but besides that, there's something very obvious to anyone that knows judaism: dna doesn't make someone jewish. the primary 'evidence' for colombus being jewish is dna (which, while it is most likely his, it may not be). every article's quotation is this:
"And both in the Y chromosome (male) and in the mitochondrial DNA (transmitted by the mother) of Hernando there are traits compatible with Jewish origin."
"traits compatible with jewish origin". its a very vague term. it doesn't really impart a solid understanding that colombus is jewish; and him being jewish, from what i can tell, also contradicts past understanding of his origin (genoa) as well as his actions (forced conversion of native americans, a deep connection and religiosity based in christianity).
even if this dna evidence is correct, however, him having jewish heritage does not make him jewish. saying that he is jewish based solely on dna reflects a blood-based understanding of jewish identity that echoes back to antisemitic purges like the holocaust. saying that he, a deeply catholic / christian person, is jewish erases colombus' actual faith, and states that personal choice / conversion / professed beliefs are inferior to having jewish blood.
the fun part is, this isn't even a new antisemitic lie / exaggeration. even back in 2012, cnn has been trying to claim that colombus was jewish. his colonization of america was actually all part of his plan to get money to take back jerusalem. it also includes other arguments, like that him leaving money to charitable causes in his will is a sign of judaism.
there's also a paper that discusses this, and how its much, much older than even 2012. i havent verified it, but it may be useful reading for some; it also mentions that the theory gained popularity in the 1930s as the 'jewish question' "was very much on the public mind".
Not "shake a lemon angrily at G-d" week, but rather;

Appreciate the various textures and shapes of these four species. Feel the weight of them in your hand. Value how different in so many aspects each of them are.
Take them all in your hands, and bind them together like an embrace. Point them in all the corners of the earth- South, North, East, heavenward, downward, and West. Crying in the gym? It's more likely than you think
Shlomo Ron was an unarmed, elderly man who didn't have much military or combat training. He was a gentle and soft-hearted individual who loved arts, particularly theater, music, and literature.
He loved his wife, Hana, with whom he had shared many years, along with his daughters and his beloved grandson. Shlomo and Hana resided in Kibbutz Nahal Oz, and they had never left their home, even during perilous times.
They were present in their residence on the morning of October 7, 2023, along with their two daughters and grandson, who were celebrating the Simchat Torah holiday. Tragically, their kibbutz was attacked by Hamas gunmen, terrorists who committed heinous crimes against humanity.
They were left defenseless, as neither the army nor the police were there to protect them. In this dire situation, Shlomo had neither weaponry nor combat experience.
Shlomo wasn't armed. He was no General. He was an 85-year-old man with a mustache and glasses. He was quite ill. He had a gentle soul. He loved theater, music, and art.
Showing immense courage, Shlomo left the shelter where his loved ones were hiding and sat alone in the living room of his home, waiting for the murderers. When the terrorists discovered him, they saw an elderly and frail man sitting alone in an armchair.
Heartbreakingly, they executed him, believing he was an easy target. Afterward, the murderers departed, assuming he was the only one at home. Shlomo's plan was to wait alone in the living room to give the impression that he was an old and solitary man.
He understood that they would likely kill him but hoped that, after doing so, they would move on, presuming he lived alone. In doing so, he selflessly saved the lives of his beloved Hana, daughters, and precious grandson, all of whom remained safe in the shelter.
Their survival was owed to Shlomo's bravery. Shlomo Ron was laid to rest in Kibbutz Kinneret, beside the poet Rachel and near Naomi Shemer whom he loved so much. He may be gone, but his legacy lives on.
Despite lacking any special combat training or physical prowess, Shlomo Ron will be remembered as a hero for his selfless act.

I lit a candle for my cousin, Shir. I can't believe it's been a year, I still cry every time I think about her. So I decided to share some facts about her:

Wow...you sure are making a lot of assumptions about me because of a single post where I criticize something for spreading harmful rhetoric.
I never denied that there were German people who helped or German victims but in the story the father is an actual nazi.
I as a descendant of holocaust survivors have no moral burden to forgive nazis or extend empathy to them.
I don't believe I'm better i dont see how im berating people for being people. Lacking empathy for a nazi is not the same as lacking empathy for anyone who I see as an outsider. I only call criticism dumb if the person refuses to interact with the conversation in a mature way (this is visible from other interactions i have had about this exact subject). The righteous comment was simply about the statement that Judaism does not ask you or force you to forgive those who have deeply wronged you as opposed to some religions that may find that righteous. It was never about people not being empathetic enough it was simply about a bad story doing bad things and people not being aware of the bad things it has done.
