Was at the furry convention and this one furry in a wooly turtleneck was giving me terrible vibes. Felt like he didn't belong there, like he was a predator.

A real wolf in sheep's clothing.

I think Lirin's problem is his empathy for all life extends so far it encompasses everyone. He loves his son, but he hates that someone he raised to be a surgeon grew instead into a killer. Lirin loves his son but he can't help but bemoan all the other sons, sons with fathers, that Kaladin has killed. Lirin knows exactly what it's like to have a boy not return from war, and he knows Kaladin is responsible for many fathers learning that feeling. Lirin can't embrace his son for fear of the blood staining his surgeon's coat.

Okay yeah maybe Kaladin’s parents have a healthy relationship with each other but Kaladin and Lirin have a horrible relationship and he’s a ridiculously toxic father and just generally a horrible person when it comes to actually you know, treating his son with even the slightest bit of love and respect, which he’s utterly incapable of doing

You know I’m going to have to disagree with you here. This doesn’t seem like the type of reaction that someone would give to their son believed to be dead if they hated him and were incapable of treating him with love and respect.

Not to mention Lirin was the sole surgeon of Hearthstone. That takes a large mental toll on a person. And I think Lirin is very similar to many a man in any small farming community and doesn’t know how to show his love outwardly often. (Sources: my mom works ER as a nurse and it’s a hassle somedays. And also living in a small agricultural community of under 8k people all my life)

And so no. Lirin is not the perfect father. He’s got flaws. But so does Dalinar. Nobody ever talks about how Dalinar was a horrible father for Adolin and Renarin when they were children. Lirin wants to see the best for Kaladin and in his eyes it’s not being a radiant. But that’s because he didn’t see the changes that Kaladin went through while he was away. To Lirin it was sons go off to war -> one dies -> the other dies -> a year after the sons back from the dead -> he’s got slave brands -> he’s a shardbearer? -> he’s a radiant!

But we got to see the characters development and we get to see the struggles Kaladin goes through. While again Lirin doesn’t because he’s not omniscient. Does he not 100% agree with what Kaladin does? Yes. But do your parents 100% agree with what you’re doing? I’m going to guess probably not.

what’s it like to be a stinky boy

Can't say, probably like being me but less stinky

Not because she's slippery but because she would eat the glue.

i know kaladin was also living in the walls for a while but that was more as a cornered animal, like an asylum escapee, or a squatter who you don’t know is there. Lift was born to make a nest and eat holes in your drywalls. It was never a question of why. Only glue traps can stop her

Sanderson broke a fundamental rule: he gave an edgy fantasy protagonist who's the chosen one and good at everything two living parents that love each other. I don't think I can live with this faux pas

Can’t believe the most healthy relationship thus far in stormlight is Kaladins parents.
