During a concert, Till pulled a sausage out of his pants from their previous dinner and Ollie put it in his mouth. Flake felt disturbed as he couldn’t tell that it was just a Bockwurst and looked away. Till was so excited that he smashed a light hanging right in front of his face.

Just to group them for myself, here's another PaulandFlake band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjwyR1TSPeY

... Talking about PaulAndFlake's musical endeavors: Rammwiki says that Flake & Piet was Flake + his mysterious neighbor Piet, but here's what I found in Mix mir einen Drink:

Wenn gar niemand zu greifen war, machte ich eben mit Paul etwas. 1991 erschien unter den Namen Flake und Piet eine Kassette, die hieß »Goessel beinhart«. Abstrakt strukturierte Elektronik mit Titeln wie »Der Damenschneider« oder »Granatendub«. Ich habe mir die Kassette jetzt mal wieder angehört. Das ist wirklich harter Tobak. Junge, Junge, sage ich da nur.

Which I would (badly) translate as:

If no one else was available, I would do something with Paul. In 1991, a cassette was released under the name Flake und Piet, which was called "Goessel beinhart" ("Tough gosling"??). Abstractly structured electronics with titles such as "Der Damenschneider" ("The Tailor for Ladies") or "Granatendub" ("Grenades Dub"). I've listened to the cassette again lately. This is really tough stuff. Boy, boy, I'm just saying.

... From which I understand that Piet-the-neighbor is actually Paul. But I don't know for sure. Anyway, it sounds like a lot of fun.

Thank you for showing me Wolgas, that does indeed sound like a kingly trip.

Flake's podcast - König und Königin (King and Queen)

Published 2020-12-09, i can't find if i did a post on it at the time, but it's possible i didn't (I'm giving tumblr the benefit of the doubt here), so here it is, before it dissappears from the Radio Eins webpage.

I think the podcasts are regularly reposted though, every 2nd tuesday there is a new Flake podcast, but every 4th tuesday they re-publish an older one, so with a bit of luck we'll get another listen somewhere in the future 🌹

FLAKE. Des Tastenfickers Podcast.
radioeins.de
Flake ist der „Tastenficker“ von Rammstein und Autor von Bestellern. Seine Kenntnis ungewöhnlicher Musiktitel ist grenzenlos; seine Themen u

Not that many anecdotes in this one, mainly Flake playing music an musing on bandnames and songs etc (which, now we know that Richard listens to Flake's podcasts, i'm pretty sure he'll give Flake a call afterwards to correct some facts 😁 like on the band King, named after singer Paul King, which Flake it seems thinks is a bit pretentious to call yourself 'king', but in this case it's actually the guy's name 🍀).

But there is a little gem starting about 1h31, when Flake announces the next song is one that is only known to 4 people in the world, and he is one of them, it is called 'Der König' (The king)

Flake basically spend his entire time playing music, in official bands, but also getting together with other friends and just playing for the fun of it. When there weren't concerts to play, they would just take their instruments, drive somewhere and play. This time there were 4 of them: André Greiner-Pol (singer and guitarist of Freygang, he was forbidden to play by the state at the time, so he was bored), Alexander Kriening (by that time former drummer of Feeling B, because he didn't want to commit to one particular band), Flake, and a technician (who by the way is still sound technician for Rammstein).

The 4 of them drove to a house in the village Oderbruch (very near the polish border), without any plan, just taking along their gear. The first day they spent putting together all their equipment, second day they played a bunch of songs, and the third day they played everything on cassette-tape, so they could have their friends listen to it. And between playing they went on walks to the village (to buy milk and cheese), Flake got to drive the car, he didn't have a license yet, but André let him drive his 'Wolga' car. It made Flake feel like a king, he just did what was fun to do, the weather was nice, they were great friends and had loads to talk about.

Life was really okay for Flake 😍

I particularly love this picture. Olli is just lost in that suit, Richard looks so cheery, and Flake is so grumpy with his snacks. But mostly I like to imagine that there exists a simultaneous photo of Paul, grinning like a maniac, with Flake surly and washed-out in the foreground.

Just rewatched the Radio making-of now that I can fully appreciate with subtitles and I have to say my favorite bit (after the hilarious credits scene of course) is when Jeorn can't remember the word for Paul's neckwear and they immediately cut to Paul and one of the wardrobe people:

Wardrobe guy: "Ascot"

Paul: "Ascot. Schneider, I'm getting an ascot!"

Schneider, off screen: "Custom made for you?"

Paul: "Well, I'm not going with...I'm not going out with an ascot from the department store."

Agreed, that sounds like Paul to me.

Rammstein and Depeche Mode 2001

On press conference in Tallinn 2001 Paul and Flake were asked following:

You’ve made a cover of Depeche Modes song “Stripped”, How do you feel about this band?

When we made this cover, we didn’t know them. We were asked to cover a song for the Depeche Mode tribute record. We’ve met them a few times, but we don’t know them very well. Their singer doesn’t drink anymore, goes to bed immediately after the concert. And with Martin Gore, we don’t know if he likes men or women.

It does not say here who answered this but to my ears it sounds a lot like Paul, because he like to bring the gay topic into interviews. But then it also kind of sounds like Flake …

This picture is taken at award show in Germany. Fanboy Richard does not even try to hide that he would like to eat Martin alive. And look how well both frontmen are side by side.
