Sunlight streamed through the window in John’s living room and you sucked in a breath as you sat up abruptly, refamiliarizing yourself with your surroundings before falling back against the couch again. You were immediately pleased that your head only ached slightly and you felt good overall despite having drank the night prior. It didn’t take much to give you a hangover, and considering you had finished yours and Anita’s drinks you had expected a blinding headache upon waking. You wrapped the blanket around you more tightly and tried to force your eyes to stay open for more than a few seconds at a time, which was proving to be more difficult than it should’ve been. 

As you began to wake up your thoughts kept drifting back to John’s actions the night prior. He’d wished you a very short goodnight and looked like he’d seen a ghost once you’d gotten ready to go to sleep. He was just…off. You weren’t sure if he just really didn’t like people staying the night at his flat or if it was something you had done and forgotten after falling asleep, but he had acted strange from the moment you entered to the time he dismissed himself to sleep. You sat up and rubbed your eyes, trying to remember any specifics about the night prior and coming up blank. 

John had a tendency to seem a bit short and standoffish to others due to his inherently shy nature, but it wasn’t something you’d ever experienced yourself. John had opened up to you within a few days of knowing him and the two of you had been close since. Despite this you had witnessed him avoid any conversation with people he didn’t know that wasn’t entirely necessary, professors included. You had asked him if it made him nervous to talk to people, but he had explained that he just really didn’t like talking to people he didn’t like or know; which included most people.

“What the fuck was that?” Anita asked as soon as the door had shut behind John, her eyebrows nearly in her hairline. She had witnessed what was one of the most intimate moments she had ever seen, let alone between two people who weren’t dating. “And don’t you even dare tell me nothing because that was not nothing. That was as far from nothing as I’ve ever seen.”

“I don’t know, I don’t fucking know anymore,” you let out through a groan, feeling the beginnings of tears form behind your eyes. “God, this can’t be happening to me. This is not happening to me. It’s not. I am not going to become a bloody cliche, it’s not happening.”

You went to your bedroom to change into sweats and she followed, standing outside your door while you did so. “You need to give me something to go off of, Y/N. That was…”

“Insane? Ridiculous? Absolutely absurd?” You said, opening your door harshly. “Fuck! This isn’t happening!”

John had tried to place the exact moment when he had officially and totally fallen in love with you many times, but he simply couldn’t. He thought maybe it was the time he first saw you, or maybe when you first shared a heart-to-heart talk over coffee after class; but it wasn’t that easy. Many nights were spent mulling over this loaded question, and he had yet to come to a definitive conclusion. He figured it had happened gradually, or maybe that it was something that had always been there for the time he knew you and he just didn’t realize it. He knew it was possible to have that innate feeling, to just know that it was meant to be. His parents had claimed the very same thing happened with them, and he had been skeptical of their story until it happened to him. And maybe that was the best explanation for how he came to love you he would ever get, that his body and soul knew before his mind did, and one day he finally caught up.

While this answer was hardly satisfying, things rarely were when it came to his feelings for you. You didn’t come with a manual or textbook he could study, no matter how much he wished you had. As much as he hated listening about the dates with other guys you would go on, it did provide him with useful information. He knew your favorite flowers, how fast was too fast when it came to the progression of the relationship itself, what a good first date was, and many more small bits of information he had been collecting over the last year and a half. None of this told him quite how to make you look at him like you like the love of your life and not your best friend, though.

But he was getting ahead of himself.
