Honestly I feel like personally people who try to rewrite YHS to be less problematic miss a lot of the things that drew people into the show. I remember watching it as an edgy teen and all the edge made it feel SO COOL, it made it feel like things have consequences and more immediate ones at that, the fact basically everyone is the fucking Worst made the characters feel more like actual teenagers who make edgy jokes and do edgy things, Sam being a horrible awful horrid person who does horrible terrible sickening things was never a hang-up of the show, it was one of the main draws!

The fact such bad things could happen to characters, or the characters could do some fucked up shit was a huge reason I feel a lot of people included myself watched. It wasn’t a fairy tale or some fun minigames with a fun cast of funky characters, it was a highschool. It was a highschool full of neglected and unstable kids that we got to watch hit a breaking point. The original series always was at the end of the day a tragedy. It’s hard to remember sometimes from how off the rails Tokyo Soul got, but the original series ended in utter tragedy.

The day isn’t saved, the boy can’t stop the girl’s death, all that’s left are the ghosts they at least managed to avenge. There was no happily ever after as the secondary boy watches the love of his life be forced to leave him again, it was all. for. nothing. They gained nothing at the end of the story but bloody fucked up pseudo-closure, and they gave up everything for it in the hopes of something better. Three problem teens losing the race against the clock despite all they’ve given up and done to try and fix everything. With nothing to show but the blood on their hands and the feeling of distrust to the world around them that was supposed to protect them. It’s not supposed to feel good and be a victory. It was a story about bad people doing bad things and watching our heroes get worse and worse from it all.

Nearly all character grown is negative, the teens are shown with problems that don’t magically get solved as the adults around them are either too caught up in their own worlds to notice or just straight up don’t care. No one started the series as a good person really, and all their attempts to be good fail while being bad is constantly rewarded by the kinds of adults who prey on that kind of behavior from teens. A spiral of one bad choice constantly building and building on itself outside of your control, where the biggest killer is a desperate attempt to make things right as everything goes out of control including your own emotions and mind.

It’s a story of failure, of being failed by your peers, failed by your friends, failed by society, failed by your emotions, failed by your beliefs, failed by yourself, failed by your enemies, and most importantly, how you are failed by love. Which as an edgy incredibly depressed young teen, was incredibly cathartic to watch unfold.

A series that opens on one teens drinking problem then ends in that same teen failing to save another teenager from suicide can really be nothing but a tragedy. A dark tragedy where teenagers make bad edgy jokes to cope with their deep set problems because that’s what teens do. The problematic nature is in nearly all cases just as important as everything else to telling a coherent impactful thematically interesting story.
