I Fully Believe That If Nikolai Knew Darklings Full Plan, He Wouldve Joined Him.

I fully believe that if Nikolai knew Darkling’s full plan, he would’ve joined him.

Me: I just think that if Leigh wanted to write a cautionary tale about a manipulative man who is beautiful but not as he seems, she should have made him a non-grisha prince like Nikolai. Because then you have someone who pretends to sympathize with the oppressed Grisha but is actually just exploiting them for his own gain which is a much more interesting commentary on society. And then Alina could have been the revolutionary trying to overthrow the system and help change things for the Grisha, opposed by a non-grisha who wants to control them. 

Instead, she makes the villain the one person actively fighting to improve things for the Grisha and ultimately gives Alina very little interest in the cause and makes the non-grisha characters nice and understanding and gives us a message of ‘you just need the nice people to be on the throne and then it will be fine’ which is a naive point of view. Its not about whether or not the Darkling is good, its about where she ultimately decided to place the villain in the story/world that bothers me.

Inej murdered twins who had done nothing wrong and just were doing their job (guarding the Little Palace from intruders) and avenging their fallen siblings who she killed.

Kaz was all too ready to sell a random girl who would be abused/killed/enslaved, all for his own selfish motive. you can also say he is responsible for Marie’s murder as it wouldn’t have happened without his actions.

Alina caused saints know how many people to die because she wanted to go with Mal (by destroying the maps.)

Zoya was racist as fuck @ Alina (no I am not letting that go, plus Zoya was just a mean girl?? the hell happened??).

Baghra was abusive, using violence and drugs against her pupils (including Alina).

Zlatan was ready to murder everyone on board, cause a Civil War and doom both Ravkas in process, also sold Grishas to Fjerda to burn.

and four of those characters are the protagonists and/or characters I’m supposed to view as “the good guys.”

and I’m supposed to care about a random city full of random people who might or might not have been innocent????
