Finally You Understand Why The Villains Redemption Arcs Feel Unearned.

Finally you understand why the villains redemption arcs feel unearned.

Please don’t insult me. I’ve understood it for a looonngggg time. It’s why I’ve always hated the character of Izuku Midoriya; it’s why I’ve ranted about Heroes again and again. I’ve never understood the decision to make Deku a foil to Shigaraki (2019); he has never been the kind and ‘desire to save that surpasses all common understanding’ that the manga liked to talk about (2019). It had never been acknowledge as a flaw and never addressed or developed. He’s barely thought about the ‘whys’ of saving a Villains as a Hero and when he does, it’s a forced psychic connection (2021). The story doesn’t work because Deku hasn’t put any single consideration into the flaws of Hero Society that would allow him to understand the Villains as the products of this society and it’s his duty as a government-sponsored law enforcer to give a fuck (2021). I’ve complained about the kids too, because all of them are the same (2022).

From a thematic perspective, the Heroes have utterly failed. They wanna save the Villains because the plot requires them too, not because they worked hard to come to this decision. I admit I’ve been solely focusing on that and not the character-centered aspect of the characters meditating this, in which it’s also lacking because, once again, the plot requires them to suddenly develop an awareness to move the plot along and not because of any internal journey. But that ties into the former, because they should’ve incorporated both of these elements into the one conviction to save.

It’s not that the Villains haven’t demonstrated enough sympathy to be deemed ‘worthy of being saved’. It’s that they should be helped even if someone believes they’re undeserving - and the story needed to be more convincing of this when it resolved to have Deku save Shigaraki.

The Villains have earned their role in the story. The heroes? not so much. I’ve held out for a long time to believe that Hero Society should consider Villains loathsome - but when we’ve got Tartarus guards calling Villains ‘beasts in human skin’, it really shows the gaping crack they’ve contributed to create the conditions for Villains to be made.

It’s a tough sell to readers that Heroes should care about the Villains, I get that; but that is what the story should’ve achieved in order to match it’s message and themes.

“Finally”? I’ve understood it in the meta, story-efficiency sense since before Deku even had he’s first thought of “Gee, Shigaraki looked like he needed saving :( Why did I never consider that he had once been a child who probably went through hell to develop such despair.” I foresaw this outcome, and I still resent it. If you’ve bothered to exert even an once of reading comprehension when reading my posts, you would’ve realized. ‘Finally’. Yes, indeed, I see that so far we’ve been forced to accept protagonist-centered morality and even then it was unconvincing.

People: Overhaul misgendered Magne on purpose!!!

Magne upon meeting Overhaul and not even telling him her pronouns before assaulting him:

People: Overhaul Misgendered Magne On Purpose!!!

(SHE LITERALLY TRIES TO MURDER HIM BUT GO OFF I GUESS)

(also his glove is oddly big for some reason just look lmao)

He doesn’t even misgender her but once, and he is immediately told of her preferred pronouns by Twice afterwards. I’d also like to point out that even Horikoshi felt the need to point out that he took responsibility for her death by keeping the scar that she gave him when she tried to kill him to admit the fault to himself for it.

People: Overhaul Misgendered Magne On Purpose!!!

I’d also like to add that Magne’s death is pretty sad, but fitting. She just reunited with her friend and was full of new boldness because of it. She had found a place to fit in and where she could stay, and so she acted without even thinking. She was aiming to seriously hurt Overhaul, maybe even kill him.

People: Overhaul Misgendered Magne On Purpose!!!

(look at Overhauls fucking feet lmao)

And now notice that he’s taking off his right glove in this top right panel:

People: Overhaul Misgendered Magne On Purpose!!!

One touch. That’s all it took. And that not even his full hand. Looks like two fingers at most. And at least? Just his one index finger. That’s all it took to cause this:

People: Overhaul Misgendered Magne On Purpose!!!

And Overhaul is correct to say this afterwards:

People: Overhaul Misgendered Magne On Purpose!!!

Because Magne is the one to attack him first, he didn’t actively provoke her, she just took his mini monologue to heart because of the conversation with her friend, she wanted to stay as ‘unchained’ as the person who her friend said she was. So her new confidence due to talking to her friend made her act up to defend the league with everything she had.

And she paid with her life. She didn’t think he’d be able to best her that easily, and she rushed in without even knowing about his quirk or anything, no one knew she was going to either, the decision Magne made was spur of the moment, and no one could’ve stopped it.

(and yes I’ve checked, no one mentioned that Magne was female until Twice did back at the Yakuza base, that is literally the only time gender is brought up at all during this time)

So basically, fucking read the manga. Stop assuming Overhaul is some sort of anti-trans bitch just because he misgendered Magne one (1) time.

I’ve accidentally misgendered people and I love when they tell that oh shit! You’ve made an oopsie doopsie mistake! You fuckwad Calamity my preferred pronouns is (insert pronoun here) and I’m “like oh shit! I’m so fucking sorry I’ll never do it again!” And then we continue our conversation with me using their correct pronoun and that’s that!

You cannot blame Overhaul for assuming Magne was a 'him’ because Magne does have a stereotypical male figure, and this man was raised in a gang, so honestly he may not be all that aware of people out there who are trans or the such, he just saw a masculine figure attack him, so he (rightfully) assumed that a man had attacked him. He was corrected, and tge subject is never brought up again, happy?

Also, guess what? Overhaul never talks about Magne and her gender is never brought up again, why? Because she’s dead. Y'all she’s dead. What more can be done? I’m sorry folks but she’s gone. RIP my girl Magne, next episode that comes out next year is gonna be her death episode. Cheers.

Thanks for coming to my Magne talk, now stay comfy.

Warning: Leave my blog if you’re an anti.

The next bitch to say Overhaul purposefully misgendered Magne (a trans woman whom he didn’t know was trans and also was trying to murder him) is gonna get blocked. I cannot stand such ignorant behavior and if you spread lies like that then you cannot enjoy any part of my blog. None of my posts are for your consumption. No memes, no writing, no art, no nothing.

Because people, (yes, criminals and villains and gang members are humans) make mistakes, and Magne is a very masculine presenting woman. She’s comfortable with her body, and will clarify to people she likes to call her Big Sis Magne. She didn’t like Overhaul, on a personal level she hated him because he was, by monologuing, challenging what her friend had said about her (being brave and strong enough to actually be ok with herself and her job) and because of that, she felt the need to defend herself. She was fairly confident too, her talk with her friend motivated her to act without thinking, so she did, not telling her pronouns or her name before attacking.

So, seriously, if you think Overhaul purposefully misgendered Magne, fuck off my blog. And also, Overhaul was indeed raised in a gang, making his awareness of such things as being transgender, very limited.

I was raised in a neighborhood with racists and criminals and gangs, it’s taken me 18 years of my life to actually be knowledgeable about trans people, because I was raised where no one was trans, and anyone who was was most likely shot. There’s still trans people being shot in my old neighborhood. (Thanks Dallas) It wasn’t until I met someone and started to date them, and then they transitioned during our relationship, that i was able to learn about trans people and all that that comes with it. I’m still not the best, but I had to learn from a personal experience about trans people and the culture surrounding them. (And also I learned not to be a racist around 10 so that also took a while)

Chisaki didn’t get that chance, and while you cant simply say he’s blameless in the matter, you also must realize that Overhaul is corrected, and Magne rests in peace with her pronouns in place and Overhaul taking blame. (He kept the scar he gave her, that scar is a major reason why his hairline is so fucked in the anime, he kept it despite being able to fix it, because he wanted to take fault for what he did wrong, it’s what you might call ‘the Yakuza way of admitting fault’)

Y'all can’t forget that villains are capable of making mistakes, have I accidentally misgendered someone after they tried to murder me and I killed them in self-defense? No. Obviously not. None of us have been through that.

I have accidentally misgendered people though, from a random woman at Walmart whom I asked 'Sir, can you please get that down for me?’ since they appeared tall and I was very short, amd she turned around and asked me to call her 'ma'am’ before grabbing my cereal and giving it to her. I did indeed say 'thank you ma'am’ and go back to shopping. Another time I accidentally misgendered a young guy, who, because of his skirt and makeup, I thought was a girl, but when I attempted to talk to him, he notified me of his preferred pronouns, and I continued talking to him using he/him pronouns. I still talk to him, and I’m over the phase of accidentally using the wrong pronouns.

Do i deserve to die because society has taught me that masculine = male and feminine = female? Do i deserve to be hated on because I addressed a person as the wrong pronouns before they could tell me of their preferred ones?

If you have common sense, the answer to those two questions is obviously no.

So, stop trying to make Overhaul some sort of transphobic villain, because even though he is indeed a villain, he isn’t transphobic. Quit telling people to kill themselves over liking Overhaul, quit being actual fucking criminals on the internet, because if that person does indeed kill themselves, guess where you’re going? Jail. You’re going to be the very thing you hate the most: a villain.

Anyways, please feel free to block me now or I will find you and block you myself! I’ll be going though tags and selecting random tumblrs to check for suspicious posts that try to spread misinformation about Overhaul and Chisaki, plus I’ll just check the top of like every Tumblr that follows me because usually antis put that they hate overhaul right on top. I seriously cannot stand Antis, so even if you’re an anti on my blog that just likes my non-Overhaul stuff, get off. I’ve been mostly accepting of everyone as long as they don’t start drama but with the new season coming soonish, it’s better i make this blog as safe as possible sooner rather than later.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for the people who are cool: I’ll see you after this mini-purge with new content. (And also maybe a master list of all my Overhaul analyzation stuff)
