Spanish reflexive verbs!
Today I was trying to explain reflexive verbs to @sincerelyalison and decided to just make a post about it instead!
So what is a reflexive verb?
Well, it’s a verb that one does to oneself. It’s easiest to think of bathroom activities when thinking of reflexive verbs - you wash yourself, you brush your own hair, you shave your own face.
When a verb is reflexive, it ends in -se. Here’s a few examples!
Acostarse, to go to bed Afeitarse, to shave oneself Bañarse, to take a bath Despertarse, to wake up Ducharse, to take a shower Lavarse, to wash up (wash oneself) Levantarse, to get up
And you probably know “llamarse” - to call - from “Me llamo” - I am called, how you introduce yourself sometimes. But what’s with the “Me”? And how do we know which ending to use? Well, that’s the next part!
How do we conjugate reflexive verbs?
What you need to know:
How to conjugate the verb normally in the tense you want
Reflexive pronouns
Stem changes
First, we need to know the reflexive pronouns.
Me, te, se, nos, os, se.
Myself, yourself, him/her/itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves.
Next, we move the ending “se” to the front of the verb.
llamarse -> se llamar
despertarse -> se despertar
lavarse -> se lavar
acostarse -> se acostar
Then, we transform the “se” into the person it’s being done to. This is where the reflexive pronouns come in!
se llamar -> “me llamar” = to call myself
se despertar -> “te despertar” = to wake yourself up
se lavar -> “se lavar” (this one stays the same, because it’s he/she/it!) = to wash him/her/it
se acostar -> “nos acostar” = to go (ourselves) to bed
Finally, we conjugate the verb to match the reflexive pronoun.
me llamar -> me llamo = I call myself
te despertar -> te depiertas (stem changes are the same!)
se lavar -> se lava = he washes himself, she washes herself, it washes itself
se acostar -> nos acostamos = we put (ourselves) to bed
It’s that simple!!
Let me know if I made any mistakes on here - also if you need help with this or another Spanish topic, just message me!

Just gonna drop these because its been months and i wanted them out from limbo. Here are my pieces for cherry’s fanzine!! Its not out yet but hopefully soon.
