Chapter 1: Becoming friends
female reader, friends to lovers, slow burn, mentions of newt offing himself, use of y/n
(Y/Ns perspective)
I’m sitting around in the med-jack talking with Clint and Jeff, my best friends. Our days usually turn out like this, sitting waiting for another slicer to patch up or anything else of the sort.
“Do you think we’re ever going to get out of here?” jeffs says after we sit in awkward silence. We always end up having this type of conversation, which makes sense considering there not much else to talk about. Plus, me being a girl, they don’t want to say anything too weird.
“I hope so, I hate being stuck in here with all these boys. If we got out there maybe I could finally find a girl-friend,” I say looking down at my finger, picking out the dirt from underneath them. I look up and clint and jeff and they’re looking at me like I just killed all the Gladers.
“Okay we’re not that bad,” says clint, looking at me like it was the most obvious thing in the world. I mean he’s not wrong it could be so much worse. But I still wish that every time that box comes up, it’s another girl. I’ve only been here for 8 months, and those 8 different times the box came up and it was just another boy, I felt so disappointed. I don’t even know why I’m the only girl, I’m not sure I’ll ever know.
“Try being the only girl in this whole place clint, being stuck with a bunch a smelly boys. I mean you too aren’t that bad, but some of these boys I can’t stand,” I look back down at my hands. We continue chatting until we hear yelling from outside. It sounds like Minho and Alby. I look at the boys in front of me with a concerned look on my face, and we all stand up and jog to the door to see what’s going on.
In the distance I see Minho and Alby holding someone. Once they got a little closer, I could tell that someone was Newt. I hadn’t really gotten time to get to know newt that much considering he was always out in the maze running and I was in the med-jack hut all day. Our relationship consisted of small smiles while walking past each other in the mornings or nights, or small telling me what happened when another runner got hurt.
Panic was quickly flooding my body and I ran back inside and prepared the bed while Jeff and Clint went out to help getting Newt inside. The four boys bring Newt inside and carefully lay him on the table in fear of hurting him even more.
I look down at Newts leg and roll his pants up to get a good look of his ankle. I see its dislocated and broken in some areas as well. I get a sense of what could have happened but still ask Minho anyway.
“What the hell happened, Minho?” I say slightly panicking.
“I don’t know, he hasn’t told me anything. I was just running in the maze when I heard and loud scream. I ran for a minute or so until I found Newt lying on the ground and started taking him back here,” I look up at Minho and I see the sadness on his face from seeing his friend in this much pain.
Clint is holding down Newt making sure he doesn’t move too much while and me and Jeff look at his ankle. Jeff gently presses down on Newts ankle, and he lets out a loud yelp.
“Its shattered, the bone is completely shattered,” Jeff says solemnly. “It’s dislocated though we need to realign it before we do anything else, alright?”
“Got it,” I rush over to the bandages and grab and few then come back and place them down on a makeshift table next to me.
“You too hold him down” I nod my head towards Alby and Minho signally them to help Clint. I direct my focus back to Newt.
“Newt, can you open your eyes for me,” He opens his eyes straight away. “Alright focus on me okay. We’re going to realign your foot. It’s going to hurt a lot. We’ll go on three, okay?” He nods.
I nodded back. “Alright. One, Two, Three,” I twist his foot into the right direction and back into place with a loud crack. Then come a loud wail from Newt. Newt writhed in pain, but the boys continued to hold down newt as me and Jeff bandaged the splints. Jeff dabbed a bit of chloroform on a cloth and pressed it to Newts nose. Soon the boy became unconscious.
A little while later while me, Clint, and Jeff where cleaning we heard the bell for dinner. “You guys go have dinner, I can stay here with Newt for the night.” “Are you sure, we can do shifts if you want,” says Clint. I shake my head no. “Alright I’ll bring you some food,” says Jeff as him and Clint walk out to dinner.
I was sitting down next to Newt when he awoke in a panic. “Hey, hey it’s alright,” I stand up and say letting him know it’s all right.
“My ankle, it hurts,” Newt says, his voice very dry. “We’ll I’d be very confused if it wasn’t,” I say trying to joke with him as I pick up some painkillers and a glass of water for him too take,. “Here take these, it’ll take them 10 minutes to kick in, but it'll be worth it,” He takes them immediately.
We sat in silence for a minute before Newt spoke up again. “How bad is it?”
“It’ll heal that’s for sure, but not properly.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” He says and looks down at his ankle.
“You’ll have a limp,” I say and look at Newts expression. This is hitting him at full force and he’s realising the consequences of this limp.
“I can’t be a runner anymore?” He questions and looks at me. I’m looking at him with a blank expression on my face. “Me being a med-jack my answer if definitely a no, I guess its up to Alby, but I think we already know his answer to that,” I look at him trying to figure out what he’s feeling.
“Do you even want to go back in the maze, I’m not sure about everyone else but to me its pretty easy to tell what happened in there,” I look at Newt and I can 100% tell what he’s feeling now. Embarrassment. He knows I know.
“Are you going to tell everyone, let everyone know how idiotic I am.” “you’re not idiotic,” I look away and start cleaning the place up.
Newt stops for a second and just looks at me. I do feel sorry for him, for the way he thinks about himself and why he did what he did.
“It was running accident, or at least that’s what were going to say. Right?” obviously he doesn’t want anyone to know. If I were him, I wouldn’t want anyone to know either. I don’t want him to feel embarrassment either, so we can move past what really happened out there. All the details. He doesn’t have to tell me.
“Yeah, a running accident, of course,” he looks away from me. He’s still embarrassed.
“It’s not my place to tell anyone what happened, you can tell everyone when you’re ready too. Including me,” I can feel his eyes burning into me, I turn around and face him.
We look into each other’s eyes; I want him to say something. I also want to say something to him. Comfort him in some way, but my minds gone blank. I feel as if the only thing I can do is be here for him and help him recover. And I decide right now and right here, that’s what I’m going to do. I don’t want to see anyone suffering like this. Especially Newt, he’s too kind and a level-minded person and I don’t like seeing him in this state.
“Do mind if I get some rest, if you want me to stay up that’s fine,” I say still looking in his eyes.
“No, get some sleep. I should get some more rest anyways,” he answers back.
“Thanks,” I give him and small smile and return to the seat I was sitting on before he woke up. I grab a blanket and pull it over me.
We sit in silence for a bit, and I can’t pull my mind away from Newt. How he must be feeling right now. I just feel so bad that I have to speak up, make him feel better. So that’s what I decide to do.
“Newt,” I say quietly.
“Yeah,” he calls back.
“I know this may sound a bit stupid to you, but I think its very brave what you did. I don’t want you too feel idiotic or embarrassed about it. I’m sure you were scared or hopeless or something like that but too me it was truly a brave thing. You did something about it, and it wasn’t the best thing to do. You still did it. I admire you for it.”
I wasn’t expecting a response from him. I didn’t want one either. I just wanted him to know what I was really thinking, whether he cared or not I wanted him to know.
(Newts perspective)
“Newt,” she says in a calm voice. It’s nice, very comforting.
“Yeah,” I answer back.
“I know this may sound a bit stupid to you, but I think it’s very brave what you did. I don’t want you to feel idiotic or embarrassed about it. I’m sure you were scared or hopeless or something like that but too me it was truly a brave thing. You did something about it, and it wasn’t the best thing to do. You still did it. I admire you for it.”
I feel my eyes starting to water, then the tears start to fall. Brave? What I did was cowardly. But she admires me for it. For trying to kill myself? I know she has her own reasons, but I’m still confused. I don’t know how to answer, what to say. I turn my body over to get a look of her. She has her back turned away from me, all cuddled up on the chair. Her body rising and falling with each breath she took.
I can’t sleep for a while, all I could think about was her words, how she admires me and thinks I’m brave. No one has ever thought that about me. I don’t think anyone could have comforted me the way she did.
(Third person)
Newt and Y/N didn’t know that that day they had made a new connection with each other. They were friends. Newt would always go to the med-jack hut when he knew Y/N was in there so she could check on his leg. They would eat all their meals together. Give the greenies the tours together. Every moment they weren’t working, they were together. They were best friends.
Here is the first chapter! I’m so sorry it took so long to get out, I wrote most of it and then had like writer’s block or whatever. On the first of April, the maze runner movies are coming onto Netflix (Australia) so I will wait until they come out to start writing more because I will base this off the movies instead of the book just because I feel like its easier to insert my own character in the movies. I was going to make this whole chapter reader perspective, but it was too hard to write a good ending so here we are. Anyways that all for now. I really got to learn how to use Tumblr better (I have no clue what I’m doing and I don’t know how to write a fanfiction).
CHARLIE RAY, YOU TRYNA GIVE ME A HEART ATTACK? JESUS CHRIST, I AM IN LOVE 🥰

Chapter 5: The Maze
(Y/N’s Perspective)
“All right, but why would Alby go in the Maze? I mean, he’s not – He’s not a runner,” says Thomas who’s sitting down on a log not doing anything, next to chuck.
“Things are different now. Alby went to retrace Ben’s footsteps before sundown, Look, are you going to help?” Newt says referring to the tree stump that him and Zart are trying to cut down.
“So, he’s gonna go back to where Ben was just stung?” Thomas replied.
“Alby knows what he’s doing, All right. He knows better than any of us,” Newt said and went back to chopping the tree stump.
Thomas stops for a second and looks down at the ground. “What does that mean?”
I look over at Newt who I can tell is getting a bit agitated from all the questions from Thomas. All right, it’s like you’ve heard, yeah? Every month the box sends up a new arrival. But someone had to be first, right? Someone had to have spent a whole month in the Glade alone, and that was Alby. I mean it can’t have been easy. But when those other boys, and girl,” Newt says pointing towards me, which earned a small smile from me. “Started coming up, one after the other, he saw the truth. And he learned that the most important thing is that we all have each other, because we’re all in this together.”
The whole time Thomas keeps his eyes on Newt, concentrating on what he’s saying. Thomas thinks for a moment before getting up and going over to the tree stump to help Newt and Zart.
He starts chopping at the tree stump. “Yeah, there you go greenie,” Newt stated.
Thunder starts rumbling and as soon as I hear that I get up. “I’m going to get going now, see you guys later I guess,” I say.
Zart and Thomas utter a small bye to me. “All right, I’ll see you later,” Newt says with a look of what I think is a disappointment but I’m not entirely sure because I can never tell what he’s feeling.
“Yeah, I’m going to go too,” says Chuck as he gets up and we walk beside each other back to the Homestead.
(Third Person)
All the Gladers are in the homestead to avoid the rain and also waiting for Minho and Alby to return from the Maze.
“They should be back by now. What happens if they don’t make it?” Ask’s Thomas.
“They’re gonna make it,” Newt replies.
Thomas walks up to Newt. “And what happens if they don’t?” Thomas asks again.
“They’re gonna make it,” Newt says again to reassure him.
“They’re gonna make it,” Newt says again to reassure him.
Once the rain stops all the Gladers gather at the entrance of the Maze, still waiting for Minho and Alby to come back. Newt, Y/n, Thomas, Chuck, Gally and a few others are standing in the front while all the other Gladers are behind them. The doors to Maze start cracking signalling that the doors are about to close.
“Come on guys, can’t we send someone after them” Thomas asks and Gally replies. “That’s against the rules. Either they make it back or they don’t.”
“Can’t risk losing anyone else,” says Newt.
The wind from inside the Maze starts blowing in everyone’s faces and the doors start closing. Just before everyone loses hope Thomas spots Minho and Alby in the distance. “There!”
“Wait no somethings wrong,” Newt says once he realises that Alby is on top of Minhos back.
“Is he stung?” Y/N asks.
“COME ON MINHO YOU CAN DO IT!” Chuck yells to encourage him. All the other boys start yelling for Minho to come faster.
As the doors are quickly inching closer together, Minho puts Alby down and starts dragging him by his legs. “Minho, you gotta leave him!” Gally yells.
Minho is so far away, and walls are quickly closing. Before we knew it Thomas had quickly run in the Maze just before the walls shut. “Thomas, no!” Chuck yells.
The walls are fully shut with Thomas, Minho, and Alby inside. All the Gladers on the outside are standing there in shock.
“Why did he do that?” Y/N asks in a panic and looks frantically between the Gladers. No one answers.
Y/N starts walking towards the Med-Hut very fast before Newt starts calling out to her. “Hey! Y/N, come back!”
Newt catches up to her. “Hey, where are you going?” Y/N continues speed walking away and replies. “Back to work.”
Newt grabs her arm to stop her from walking away any further. “Stop walking, let’s just stop and breathe. It’s fine.”
“No, it’s not fine! There stuck out there for the night. You said it yourself! No one has ever survived a night in the maze! I think we both know what this means,” Y/N says.
Newt stands there and looks down at his feet not knowing how to reply because she’s right. They’re probably not going to survive.
“We’ll talk later, I just need to be alone right now,” Y/N says before walking back to the Med-Hut. Newt watches her walk away before deciding to go back to her.

Chapter 2: Greenie
(Y/N’S Perspective)
I was sitting around in the med-jack hut doing nothing. It was greenie day, and I was waiting for here those blaring sirens, so we all know the new greenie was on his way. Plus, a bunch supplies that the Gladers needed. I loved greenie days mostly for the fact that she knew there would be more supplies waiting in the box for her. I’d had given up ages ago on hoping for a girl to come up, even though a little part of me was always hoping a girl, it never was, and I had to accept that (whether or not it frustrated me.)
Then as if on cue those sirens started. I jumped right out of her seat and followed Jeff and Clint to the box. Once I made it over, I found herself next to Newt and gave him a smile. We’ve been close ever since his accident in the maze. He knows she doesn’t care about the greenie and just wants to see what supplies have been brought up.
The buzzer blares and Gally opens the box. Everyone looks inside to see the greenie. If I’m being honest, I’ve always felt quite bad for the greenies that come up. All your memories gone, you don’t know where the hell we are, and I don’t blame them for having questions but sometimes it just gets a bit too much. Luckily, it’s not my job to show the greenie around and hear all the questions. Unlucky for Alby, because that’s his job as first-in-command I do like to say hello to them at the bonfire though.
Gally jumps in the box. “Day one, Greenie. Rise and shine,” I like to think of it has a pretty iconic line. Every single greenie hears it. Gally gets the greenie out of the box and shoves him on the floor pretty harshly. Everyone gathers around him to get a good look. “Kid looks like a slopper to me,” someone yells out. “I could use some help in the kitchen,” says frypan. Pretty understandable considering he’s the only cook. Everyone else was just laughing at him. Poor shank.
Assuming that he was scared like most greenies when they first enter the glade, he got up and made a run for it. I have to go it to him, he’s quite fast. Runner material if I do say so myself. That was until he tripped and fell right on his back. That’s also when the laughs started. I did let out a little giggle myself.
The greenie got up and looked around. The first time a greenie gets a good look at the glade is memorable one. A look at the place that me and the other Gladers have been for a long time, a place that they will be for a long time. It has to be quite scary seeing the big walls surrounding them, keeping them from the outside world. But there’s not much we can do about that is there.
To keep him from running again the boys throw him in the pit, for good measure. And then everyone got back to work. I helped getting the supplies out seeing if there was anything good, which as usual there was. Just a bit of medication that we were running out of and some gauze. I grabbed everything that was for the med-jack hut and went back with it.
Once I finished putting all the new supplies away, I stood out at the door of the watching Alby show the greenbean the glade. I know doubt that he has loads of questions, unlucky Alby. While watching them I see Newt walking up to the two boys with his little limp. A smile forms on my face when I see him. Every time I’m around Newt he never fails to put a smile on my face, which isn’t too surprising because he is my best friend. One of the only boys who keeps me sane.
I watch the boys conversate and before I knew it newt had left the two boys, probably going to find Chuck I assume. I stay in the doorway of the med-jack hut, people watching. There isn’t always a lot to do so it’s a good past time until I can make myself useful. Alby takes the greenie up on the lookout, Newt goes and finds Chuck, The Gladers do their respective jobs. All is well.
I continue watching everyone. My eyes lingering on Newt for a bit longer than I would like to admit. I see the greenbean walk away from Chuck and towards the entry to the maze. Chuck catches up to him and try’s his best to persuade the greenie not to go out there. Seriously he’s a tough one. One out of the three rules is to not leave, and what does he want to do as soon as he leaves Alby’s eyesight. They can tough sometimes that’s for sure.
Then Minho and Ben emerge from the maze, taking a look at the Greenie running straight past him. And there the Greenie goes again, trying to ‘have a look at the maze.’ And now obviously he’s getting a bit too close, and some Gladers are noticing this. One of them being Gally. Gally being the hot-head he is goes straight up to the greenie and shoves him straight to the ground. The Greenie gets a bit agitated and grabs some Gladers attention, me included. I get up and start jogging to where the boys are.
“What the hell is wrong with you guys,” the greenie spits out. “Just calm down alright,” says Newt. “No why won’t you tell me what’s outs there,” says the greenie again. “We’re just trying to protect you man,” Alby states. “For your own good,” says newt.
“you guys can’t just keep me here!” Obvious distress.
“I can’t let you leave,” says Alby.
“Why not?” the greenie says and is if on cue we hear the walls. The rumbles signalling that they are about to close. We all focus our attention on the wall while it shuts close. Hopefully scaring the greenie enough.
“Next time, I’m going to let you leave,” says Gally, trying to prove a point. As always.
The Greenie starts at the walls in shock as if he just saw his whole family die right in front of him. I start to walk off as all the commotion has ended until I hear my name being called from behind me. And I can immediately tell from his accent that its newt. “Y/N!” Newt calls.
I turn around and looks at him. “What’s up,” I call out while he walks over.
“Are going to say hi to greenie yet or what?”
“y’know I only do that at the bonfire, that’s when they have the most questions.”
“of course, I guess we’ll talk then.”
“Yeah, see you later,” I call out while walking off. Newt shouts a little see ya while he walk in the other direction. On greenie days I never really have enough time to talk to Newt until the bonfire at night. Which is 100% the worst part of greenie days. Not being able to talk to my best friend for the whole day. It could be worse though.

Sorry the chapter took so long to get out. This chapter is a bit shorter than the first one. Also, this was written at 3:00 AM and I just used the editor thing on word to edit because I cant be bothered so im sorry if someone this does not make sense.
