I JUST had another Rogue thought and it's pretty stupid and unlikely but STILL hear me out. Don't read on if you haven't watched it yet.

What if we have some kind of new River Song situation in terms of time travel? Maybe he already knew the Doctor (in the Doctors future) before this episode but for some reason got his memories erased. I personally thought that their falling in love was cute but felt a bit rushed. If Rogue already knew, deep down that he knew the Doctor and love him that would explain it a bit.

This really isn't based on a lot but I love time travel stuff and tragic lovers so this theory naturally came up lol

Gotta tell ya, I feel a real sense of closure finally knowing where the Doctor went after he broke that fairy circle.
