Thinking about “Just a Man” being sung on a platform, high above the audience. It is a matter of life and death. It is a conflict between a god and a king. The king of the gods and a man who sees himself as a god. There is no one else on stage except Odysseus and the infant. It’s the infant’s life or his own family. He doesn’t feel like he has much of a choice at all. Taking one life to save many. When Odysseus sings “I’m just a man”, he’s clinging onto the humanity he has left. He knows what he’s doing is horrible, but he’s hoping that his reasons justify it

Thinking about Eurylochus’ scene with the cows at the end of “Mutiny” being sung at the very bottom level of the stage. He’s level with the audience, perhaps even lower. It is a matter of life and death. This is not some fate or prophecy, this is the simple and very human act of satisfying your own hunger. Eurylochus and every other crew member on the stage with him is starving. It’s the cow’s life or theirs. It seems like a very simple choice, doesn’t it? Taking one life to save many. Eurylochus doesn’t see what’s wrong with killing the cow, or maybe he does, he couldn’t care less. They’re hungry, everyone gets hungry, everyone needs to eat. When he sings “I’m just a man”, he reminds Odysseus what it means to be human. That primal urge to eat or be eaten. Kill, or be killed

The two of them are very different in status. They are a king and a soldier, a captain and a first mate. But when it comes down to it, maybe the two of them are not so different after all

people should talk about parenting like they talk about professional sports. you can do this if you work really hard and sacrifice your body and your sleep and other passions and activities. you've got to really want it. you've got to want it more than anything else. and 70% of the people who THINK they want to be parents actually look at the hard work and think. ok. nevermind i will be a childless barista (equally noble passion). and i think everyone should cheer and clap when parents bring their children home like they would if they won olympic gold. this would fix a lot about society
