I mean why are they even being compared at first place??? Like no! There's nothing to compare them with each other because Will's problem is different from El's (and vise versa). What they do had in-common is that 1st they both felt like an outcast and 2nd they both had to lie to Mike (who is also their love interest) because that's what they felt was right thing to do (which was not).

I'm sorry but you've missed the meaning of this scene and basically the whole el's storyline this season. Practically the whole season we can see that she thinks/feels that she's a monster, that she doesn't belong anywhere and she never will, that without her powers she's useless and that she needs to lie about her life to keep important people around her, she literally thought that mike will leave her when she tells him that she's not doing so good at school. This scene was heartbreaking, I won't compare it to the van scene bc that's just not right, they both deserve better.
