10: i hate emo people

anton was at a lost. wonbin was quick to partner with bora because he figured anton would rather pair up with his girlfriend, who for some reason still wasn’t in class yet. jaehyun and jungwon had also partnered up already, leaving you at a lost as well.

everyone else in the class had seemed to already found someone. everyone except you and anton.

“who does not have a partner?” professor hwang asked. anton was hesitant to raise his hand, but he did anyway, and so did you. “you, go to her in the back.”

anton let out a quiet sigh, getting up from his seat before shooting a short glare at wonbin who was trying his best not to laugh in anton’s face. bora was obviously confused. the class filled with chatters again as anton made his way to you, heart pumping out of his chest. talking to you one on one was something he was trying to avoid. he watches you get up from your seat and move more towards the back so that you guys werent so close to the other pairs. he sits down, one seat in between you guys, before you say finally say something.

“hi chanyoung.”

he rolls his tongue against the inside of his cheek, failing to hide the smile that was about to form on his face. back then, while you would still call him anton like everyone else, you were also the only person that ever called him chanyoung, too.

“…hi y/n,” he gives you a small smile.

your professor speaks again, catching everyone’s attention. “now that you’re paired up. i want you to talk to your partner. talk. just talk to them about anything and everything. get to know them. that’s all i’ll say now.”

anton looks at you first, while you’re still looking at the professor, almost trying to guess why he could possibly be making his students do this. anton always found you pretty, but it was different right now. you seemed happier.

“i wonder why he wants us to do this.” your words bring anton back to reality. “i could talk to you about a lot of things like i used to back then,” you laughed. “i remember you always zoning out whenever i rambled. sorry for being so annoying about that by the way.”

“you think i zoned out?” anton asked, and you tilted your head with a tiny confused smile.

“i mean- yeah. i would talk about something and then switch topics every two seconds and you always kinda looked at me like you wanted me to stop talking but didnt know how to tell me and—“

“i never zoned out, y/n,” anton cut you off with a laugh. “i did.. the opposite actually. i remember all your rants about ATLA and how much you hated math. i loved listening to you talk to me about everything, it was like the best part of my day.”

he didn’t mean for that last sentence to come out the way it did, but judging by the smile on your face, he didn’t regret it. in fact, it made his face heat up.

“your girlfriend’s a lucky girl then,” you laugh. anton’s smile drops a little, and he laughs awkwardly. up until what you just said, it hadn’t hit him that hana and him have never sat down to just.. talk to each other. they knew a lot about each other but it feels as though they lacked quality time.

“yeah i guess,” he says.

“how have you been though? since sophomore year?” you ask him. anton struggles on what he should fill you in about, mostly because the majority of these last few years he spent thinking about you instead of worrying about things like school.

“nothing interesting,” he finally says as he leans back on his chair. unlike anton, you were extremely good at holding eye contact with people. he couldn’t even look at you for a second without his face burning up and finding something, anything to fix his eyes on. “i’m still friends with the same people, who i’m pretty sure you remember right? and uh i’m in a relationship now with uh.. with uh—“

“hana,” you say.

“yeah, hana. sorry.” now he just feels stupid. forgetting his own girlfriend’s name in front of you, someone who’s never even met her yet somehow managed to remember it while he had a complete brain fart trying to remember what her name was?

as if on cue, hana walks into the room, noticing all the pairs having detailed conversations about their lives until her eyes land on her boyfriend, who was a stammering mess in front of you right now.

“anton,” she whispers, standing behind him. his attention turns from you to her, and while he’s glad she finally made it to class, despite being later than she said she would be, a part of him was hoping his time talking to you wouldn’t be over. it wasn’t because of his feelings, but because he really did want to catch up with you after not seeing each other for 4 years.

you give hana a genuine smile, eyebrows furrowing when she just sends you an emotionless glare and looks at anton, who doesn’t seem to catch what hana did. you understand her though. finding your boyfriend having a full in-depth talk with another girl while you werent there, even if it’s because you were late, isn’t something all girlfriends would be okay with. you assumed hana to be the jealous type, and gave her the benefit of the doubt, knowing you’d probably be slightly uncomfortable seeing watch she just saw.

“oh- you’re here,” he says, reaching for her hand to kiss her knuckles. “you feeling okay?”

“yeah, i’m great,” she says as anton rubs her hand with his thumb.

“this is y/n, by the way,” he says, gesturing over to you. “she’s an old friend of mine. y/n this is hana.. my girlfriend.” things get awkward again when hana sends you an obviously fake smile, but normally things like that don’t bother you, so you look around the room for something focus on. jaehyun and jungwon catch your attention, both of them sending signals to you with their eyes and pointing to their phones. as you reach for your phone, you hear hana ask anton if they could move somewhere else. he seems unsure, not wanting to leave you all alone but also not wanting to upset his girlfriend by choosing to stay paired with you instead of her.

“it’s okay, go,” you say, almost demandingly. the last thing you wanted was for hana to hate you, even though it already seemed that way. anton looked at hana hesitantly before standing up to move some place else with her. his eyes are apologetic but maybe it was a better idea for him to not be around you so much.
