My neighbor had a ton of stuff left after her husband passed. I went to visit her and noticed these in a bag by the door. I knew that meant she planned on throwing them away.

So I smiled at said "Thank you for giving us E's mezuzahs. If there's any other Judaica he had that you don't think anybody wants, we'd be happy to have them."

She immediately snatched them up out of the bag, excited, saying "I didn't think anybody would want this old stuff!"

I'm still kind of mad at her about it but hey, at least they got rescued. I have no idea what they're made of, unfortunately, but I'll test some gentle cleansers/polishes and see if that takes care of some of the spots. Any caregiving tips are welcome

@sillveon Yooo I wish my girl scout troop had taught me this, because as a Tree Dad I could in fact have used the fire-with-no-matches skill

My troop was more in the "hang out in the troop mom's kitchen and read Calvin and Hobbes collections" realm of activity

I used to think growing up Mormon had no utility once I got my baptism revoked

Then covid-19 hit and it turned out that knowing without research how to create a 3-month emergency hoard of food and medicine was extremely useful

And since October 7, knowing how to recognize apocalyptic recruit-driven high-control cults is also extremely useful
