pretentious bitches feel free to shout out your fav underappreciated songs in the tags!

I love you Leonard Cohen
In fact, we DO know how people would react if Christians referred to a war against a predominantly-Muslim nation as a crusade.
In addition, Bush described the 9/11 attackers as "barbaric" and as "evildoers".
As an Old who remembers those times clearly, I can assure any young folks who don't: even in a timeframe where jingoism defined USian foreign policy, liberals and leftists pushed back against this language choice. Specifically, they claimed that calling the war on terror a "crusade" dogwhistled that it was a war against Muslims.
Further, terms like "barbarism" were Islamophobic because, while he was clearly only talking about terrorists, "barbarism" is indeed something common to anti-Arabic/Islamophobic stereotyping. And, of course, "evildoers" brought in a moralistic component that leftists and liberals argued buttressed the "crusade [against Muslims]" and, again, cast all Muslims as being evil.
A lot of right-wingers facetiously pretended that they didn't understand this. They would break out dictionaries to cite the definition of "crusade". They would point out quotes where politicians generally used the term "crusade" to mean "battle" and pretended to not understand that the context had changed with Bush's usage. They would snark about whether or not liberals and leftists didn't think 9/11 was barbaric, and giggle while their opponents twisted themselves into rhetorical knots. They would get on talk shows and newscasts and talk about how their political enemies didn't believe 9/11 was evil, which meant they thought it was good.
Ironically, I think a lot of those right-wingers actually, secretly believed the 9/11 attacks were morally good... because it gave them wars, it gave them pretenses for cracking down on civil liberties, and it gave them excuses to not care about domestic policies.
It, uh, honestly feels like leftists saw how right-wingers behaved after 9/11, and went "Oh, what if I treated the Jews like this? This seems to work really well!"
“Intifada just means ‘shaking off’ in Arabic!”
Yeah and Crusade just meant “marked by the cross” but you see a bunch of people with signs that say “Globalize the Crusade!” marching down the street you know that’s not what they mean
you’re right. anti-Zionism isn’t antisemitism. that’s why I called you an antisemite. said what I meant. didn’t stutter
So is being treated as misguided about your identity and in need of help instead of other kinds of violence also a sign of privilege for everyone pushed into conversion therapy or does it just apply to trans men and mascs.
