I think the thing that felt so off about this episode (entirely my opinion and bare with me, I love the show and I’m not trying to tear it down, just share my thoughts) is that it’s not really letting the audience have fun.

Again, stick with me. The show is amazing and I love it and it’s funny and so cool to see these characters and myths but. I feel like this episode was almost too plot-centered, you know? Yes the show has proven to be darker and more thought-provoking, which I’ve loved so far. But come on, you just put three tweens, two of which have ADHD and one of which hasn’t been outside of camp in five years, in a huge hotel full of games, roller coasters, pools, slides, games, colors, sounds, excitement, laughter, and games! Let them have a little fun! Let them forget about each other and the quest and let the audience have fun watching them be children, even for just a minute or two. Yes we got Grover but it didn’t really feel genuine. More so just for laughs.

Yes this show has very well-written dialogue and that’s where most of the humor comes from but there has to be a little more lightheartedness in order for the audience to really appreciate the darker, deeper moments and they had the perfect opportunity.

The most fun part of the entire episode was when Percy was driving the car because it was fun. It had absolutely nothing to do with the plot or myths or gods and it was just three tweens (yes I know Grover is older but still) in a car with no driving experience trying to round a curve and honk at cars and crash into walls and it was my favorite part because it was just a break from everything else.

I understand that this show has limited time and it’s message is most important and blah blah blah but I just felt like something didn’t hit right this episode and I think it was the complete gloss over a perfect opportunity to have fun. For the characters and the audience.

Percy was so infatuated this episode man. I’m not saying it’s inherently romantic, cause they are twelve and their friendship comes first and is actually so much more important than their romantic relationship. But he just seemed to really like talking to and being around Annabeth, which I loved to see because sure you could look at it as a crush but I saw it as a boy who has never had a female friend before and has realized just how cool she is. He just seems to like her and they seem like such friends now that they’re so fun to watch (not that they weren’t before, but now it’s not as angsty and harsh).

My favorite relationships, the best ones, are the ones rooted in friendship and built on a strong, trusting foundation. Sometimes it’s more important to have that friendship than a relationship, especially in situations as intense and dangerous as the ones they face.
