A premonition, an omen of things to come

He looked down at her through the black holes bored in the top of the white, carved wooden mask. She could do nothing but clutch her teddy bear tightly and stare at his imposing figure. His chest heaved, a sickly whistling noise escaping his throat through the black void of the mask’s mouth. She waited for him to raise his bloodstained knife and bring it down on her, but the moment never came. Instead, the man shifted in his clunky black boots and wheezed.

“You have death in your eyes, little girl,” the man said. “They look jus’ like mine.”

She blinked, her wide eyes glassy with fear, frozen in time.

Suddenly, a cry rang out somewhere. A window in a house along the street turned on. Another dog barked somewhere inside a house. Somewhere down the road, a voice called out “There he is!”

The figure stood in front of Marie for a moment more before taking off in a labored sprint in the direction of the woods on the outskirts of the neighborhood.
