I just thought this randomly, but...

Shoji's facial scars don't look like it was made by being welted with tools like pitchforks and farm equipment (as shown to be carried by the villagers that beat him for blood-cleansing).

His scars go almost all the way around his neck in two strands, plus the marks on his left lips nearly go all the way around the other side of his lips down though the bottom of his chin. And judging by these shapes, it rather looks like they were inflicted by something that was tightly wrapped around, wound opening the more one may move or resist.

And if that's the case, Shoji might've been held with something like a garrot tied around his neck and jaw (it's possible to tie his mouth around due to his elongated facial structure) whilst getting beaten to prevent him from running away or fighting back, like using a catchpole on a cornered animal and tying cords around its muzzle.

I know this is just my headcannon that popped in my mind the middle of the night, but man... The things this kid has likely gone through ;_; Who knows how many minutes, even hours, in which variations he was beaten for. AND HE STILL IS SUCH A SAINT AHHH-
