Lily was the one to say "I love you" first. Because with James it was obvious from the beginning how he felt for Lily. So when Lily said it after James made her laugh for something stupid, James was utterly surprised and speechless.

It was a long moment of surprise that Lily was immediately regretful. She was like "Sorry, I shouldn't have said anything..." and then like "It's okay if you don't feel the same. You don't have to say it back".
