this year, my second celebrating candlenights, we bought a $15 tiny lemon cypress and it was no problem. we lit all the candles we could. some burnt out before the hour, but most stayed alight. i wouldve made a gift, but i forgot until the last minute, so its too late now. however, i did get her a squishmallow, a pad of watercolor paper, and a tiny wooden mannequin for art. we are doing infinitely better.

candlenights is about being with the ones you love, and doing what you can to make them happy, whether you have 10 bucks in the bank and a whole lot of random art supplies from over 20 years or if you have 2k and can go buy some cool stuff.

i don't talk to the people i spent last candlenights with anymore. hurts an awful lot, tbh, but theres nothing i can do to change the way they think about me. my firepit of joy has been partially drenched, but i will rebuild. tomorrow i will hook up my mom's work monitor to my laptop and we will play goat simulator together after we've eaten the homemade pasta i'll make. it will be good.

this year, my first celebrating candlenights, I've put little pipe cleaner ornaments on my half-eaten mint plant that I use as an emergency stomachache reliever. I've gotten a lighter so that by the 20th, I can light all the candles in the house once I notice the sun's gone down, and put them out once our mom goes to sleep. I'm gonna make my mom a painting of something she likes, and it won't cost anything we don't already have.

candlenights to me is about making do with what you've got. xmas is so commercialized that I feel like I can't celebrate unless we spend money we don't have on a plastic tree that'll just get thrown out. instead I can sit here, with my friends, listening to the mbmbam candlenights specials, and choosing to fan my little ember of joy.
