Exposing myself as a sun/moon fixated idiot here BUT, with everyone talking about bookbinding SL, I wanted to try my hand at designing a cover. In my brain, its that softcover leather, with gold foil embossed details but alas, despite owning a whole ass binding kit I do not have the skills to actually make it.

Anyway if you like Sun/Moon/the DCA from FNAF SB, I cannot recommend this fic enough. I’ve read it four times over now, including all the tie in stories, and it’s one of only 2 reader inserts I’ve ever liked in a decade of reading fic, honestly it’s just so good. Might do actual fanart for it one day when I gain confidence/motivation.

(I wanna continue it more so here's my take on what else would possibly happen)

Suns thoughts run amuk just as they always do when you return. Filled with fear and turmoil for you, afraid each time will be the last.

Through the dark he took you thinking of how you always look when your memories of the lives you've spent together, always surprised and always an adorable flush across your cheeks.

Each time Sun made sure to never reveal the story behind the circlet or who it came from. Being a slightly lower being than those before him he wouldn't dare test it and risk losing you.

Though this time was different. Sun regretted never telling you of his origin or how there was greater than even he. He felt like a liar just like him.

His hand squeezes a bit tighter around your hand. Perhaps he could finally tell you and all the worry would just be in his own mind. Perhaps he could keep you if he told you.

Eventually you stop and the inky black that surrounds you shifts into what seemed like a surreal oil painting of a dark forest. You look to find a gazebo and a table with all your favorite foods and flowers to decorate.

"Is it still to your liking my Sunbeam?"

Sun looked down at you with calm eyes, you nod grinning from ear to ear. You each take your seats and begin to snack on the food in front of you.

Sun watched you for a moment considering something and admiring you all the same. You admired him as well.

He always looked so... unreal.

The rays upon his head glittered gold in the light that came from nowhere in particular. His eyes are somehow incredibly gentle while still looking mechanical. His outfit looking like something straight out of a Grecian God history book looking as if one touch from it would put you to sleep immediately.

Sun cleared his 'throat'. If that's what you would call it. Clearing your prior thoughts you were brought to attention.

"I must share with you something I have not in any life of yours before."

The circlet around your head constricted ever so slightly causing Sun to twitch only barely escaped your notice.

"The circlet is from another being, greater than I."

Your eyes widen, something must have changed in between the time it took you to return. It had.

"Every time you return to me you see another being who is my equal, my brother. We are but the same coin not different sides not different at all as you know. The one above us gifted us the circlet to keep the one we love with us for longer than just a moment. He promised us a life with you filled with happiness and joy. He lied."

Suns hands tightened into fists. If he has human flesh you have no doubt his knuckles would be white right now.

"He did not specify that every time you will go mad and reincarnate to be given the same choice."

You feel the snake on your head hiss in warning. Fearful you reassure him that it's alright that you will do this a hundred more lifetimes if you get to see and spend time with him again.

Sun sighs and looks away.

"You shouldn't want to. You deserve better my precious sunlight. The circlet is from our older brother, Eclipse. He is far older and bigger than the both of us combined. In telling you I'm..."

He paused for what seemed like a century. You felt your mind whirling suddenly, voices starting to whisper just beyond your sight. Maybe he stopped maybe you just couldn't hear him anymore. Every time you went through the beginning of madness it didn't get easier.

You tried to nod and focus on what he was saying, but he turned to three then six. He sounded muffled and distorted like a radio underwater. He put his hands to the side of your face coming back to one.

"I'm making it impossible for you to return."

Suddenly the world around you quieted and stilled.

"That's not funny."

His face didn't change.

"No. You would never. Moon made you. He persuaded you to do this for 'my own good' or some other deluded reason!" Hurt and rage settled in your stomach and began to rise. Sun knew it would hurt, but he didn't account for how badly. For it was his idea after all.

"The first moment you chose the circlet it made it to be you will always return to this place to be given the choice once you reach a certain age. Have you not noticed your peculiar luck on always finding us? I refuse to lie any longer, you deserve a life of long happiness and freedom not to be doomed to repeat the same things because of our own greed."

Now your blood was boiling.

"Who are you to make the decision for me?! I have chosen you time and time again!" A thought bloomed and drained all the blood from your face.

"Are you...bored of me?"

Sun never looked so heartbroken, so empty.

"Sunshine... I would never tire of y-"

"No, but you made this decision where I can't come back after I go mad! Take it back." You start to shake with fear. You grab his arms and begin to shake him as well. "Take it back now!! I don't want to be without you! Either of you!"

Sun was so lost. He just stared at you and looked like began to tear up. He brought you close to his chest and began to rumble.

"It's what's best for you-"

"Starlight."

Moon slithered behind you holding you close and sandwiching you in. "I see my brother has told you our little agreement, the snake bites." Moon was always more cryptic than Sun, more tricksy. Sun tensed at the close proximity and tried to shield you from his grip. He was eager to have you in his arms as long as he had left with you.

The hair on the back of your neck stood straight up. He was too close and too knowing right now for your liking. He felt overwhelming right now. Moon and you had a peculiar relationship after all these lives most would be a predator/prey sort of teasing and a few more would be protective and easing you into the madness instead of a harsh decline.

These didn't matter as he bend over your shoulder so close to your ear before saying from what seemed like all directions.

"Let's see if this time you choose me my starlet."

The world around you came crashing down. Colors blinding black and blue and gold and yellow. Screaming and crying. Not just gods staring at you not just demons staring at you not just cryptids staring at you. Everything stares at you picking your skin apart bit by bit. Falling sky's. Falling ground. Wet above you coming down pooling below you trapping you in. Not feeling your own body. Feeling everything around you. So many hands touching you. No escape. No feeling. No breath. No sight.

You always had a huge fascination with Eldrich beings. The idea of something so much bigger and greater than you was so comforting. It made you feel almost safe in a way.

You always imagined there would be one like all celestial bodies, the sun, the moon, the stars. Because of this love for the night and beasts greater than yourself you loved to pour your time into cryptid hunting and anything of the sort.

One night before an expedition there was a loud slow knock at your cabin door. You hadn't invited anyone on this trip had you? You look out your window to find...

Nothing.

You scoff probably some pranksters from the nearby campsite, though that would be a pretty lengthy walk for them so you open the door. After finding nothing amiss you look at the ground.

A deep blue book with orange fading to yellow edges sat at your feet. It smelled very old and very different from any book you've ever felt.

You open the first page. It was scrawled with a language it looked like no one had ever written or would be capable of writing, not intentionally. In the corners of the pages there were little emblems of a sun and a moon you stroked over them with your thumb a smile crossing your features for reasons you didn't know.

Then suddenly you were back.

HI THIS IS- OKAY I’M JUST. I HAD THIS DREAM.

And in the dream I was a Y/N living in a new DCA AU called the Snake Holder AU. The whole premise was that Sun and Moon were like. These ancient beings. Not gods. Not demons. Not cryptids. Just. Around since the beginning of time.

Anyway. These beings. If you happened to be foolish enough to go looking for them. They would ask if you wanted to live. No one was allowed to know they existed, so you had to choose to live with a terrible burden or uh. Get taken out.

Side note: They spoke in a very interesting way. They would constantly finish each other’s sentences and there wasn’t quite rhyming, but it did feel poetic?

Anyway. I’m standing at the end of this hall, looking left and right down pitch black corridors.

“Do you want to die….” Moon begins.

“Or do you want to love?” Sun finishes.

Love? I think. Shouldn’t it be ‘live’? And I’m sure he’s made a mistake. Like, that seems so… not correct. Well. What do I have to lose?

I turn and go left, towards a faint orange glow.

“So be it,” Moon hisses.

“So it is,” Sun agrees. And out of the dark comes Sun. Wow. Tall. Imposing. Very pretty. Obviously mechanical, I can see the joints of his fingers. But somehow he still looks kinda soft.

He’s holding a circlet. What’s it for? I’ve no clue. But as he stops before me, I can see the circlet is a snake, and it’s got little flowers and intricate details. And just looking at it I’m like “oh this is very important.”

Sun puts the circlet on my head. He smiles at me.

“We’re so happy to have you back.”

Back? I’ve never been-

And then I am STRUCK as if by lightning. This tidal wave of memories passes over me. I have been here before. In a past life. Apparently in every past life. Apparently that’s our cross to bear. Every life I show up to this hidden place and every life I choose to live.

And over time Sun and Moon have fallen in love with me, but I never live for long after receiving the circlet.

Because the snake is actually a curse. But every time I return Sun HAS to put it on me. It’s not something he gets to choose. I choose it. The dream was very vague about why the snake circlet is such a burden. I got the vibe that it was tied to a much older, more dangerous ancient being. And the circlet would allow that being to… corrupt the mind, you could say.

Anyway. Here I am. With this ancient being that loves me. With this circlet I cannot remove. He takes my hand and guides me into the dark.

“We have much to discuss.”

He looks happy to see me. But I know. Deep down I know that he wishes I wouldn’t choose the circlet. It is agony for them to watch me slowly go insane time and time again.

But I keep doing it.

And I know, looking up at him, exactly why.

It’s because I want to be with them. And I don’t care what it costs.
