WIP INTRO
WIP INTRO
Sunny specializes in the rarest form of magic, the solar arts, allowing her manipulation over time and space, but somehow being a half-mage trumps that fact. Nothing but ridicule awaits impure mage’s like her at Redstone, the Academy for Extraordinary Sorcerers. She seeks acceptance and recognition above everything else, and what better way to get it than by entering the Redstone Tourney? It’s the event of the year! Mage’s of all ages battle it out for the opportunity to compete in the Global Mage Cup, where they’ll earn eternal glory.
As a participant in the tournament, Sunny will battle against students from her academy while showcasing her magical prowess. It should be a simple task, but things take a turn when her best friends, Thomas and Ellory, go snooping around about the rumors revolving around the past Tourney champions. Despite the oddities piling up, Sunny still intends to win. But the higher she climbs in the ranks, the more anxious she becomes to see what truly awaits the champion on the other side.
What’s the true purpose of the Redstone Tourney, and what happens to the champions in the aftermath? Sunny and her friends intend to find out.
Genre: Fantasy, mystery, sci-fi, and romance (VERY slowburn, and it’s not the main focus of the story).
Setting: Redstone, the Academy for Extraordinary Sorcerers. It’s headquartered on the outskirts of an isolated patch of woodland [The Shrieking Hollows] in New Jersey.
Tropes: rivals to begrudged friends to really good friends, and friends to enemies.
Main characters:
Sunny Mage (15 y/o)- A bubbly kid who sees the world through rose-colored glasses. Unfortunately, the world chews her up and spits her back out. As a half-mage she gets bullied a lot in school, so she enters the Tourney to change her situation.
one fun fact: She has a younger brother, Jax, who went to live with her dad when their parents got divorced. They haven’t spoken since the incident.
one quirk: Sunny is a complete slob, but somehow she can always find whatever she needs in the magic pouch she keeps around her waist.
Thomas Hale (14 y/o)- A reserved hollow (person without natural magic) who goes to Redstone with hopes of learning all kinds of magic. Much like Sunny, his vision of the world is dashed when harsh realities are forced up him. His best friends are Sunny and Ellory.
one fun fact: His familiar is a cute little spider named Franklin, and Franklin is such a gossip. At night, when Thomas is trying to sleep, Franklin won’t keep his mouth shut.
one quirk: He’s obsessed with the Global Mage Cup. His love for the Tourney is so intense that he keeps a scrapbook about his favorite warriors tucked underneath his bed.
Ellory Stone (15 y/o)- The adopted daughter of Redstone’s headmistress, Lady Stone. She’s a child genius who struggles with basic human interaction, but somehow Sunny wormed her way into her heart.
one fun fact: She makes these neat little gadgets and charms based off her plant magic. They keep her up at all hours of the night.
one quirk: When a mystery or a problem is out in front of her, she won’t let it go until she finds a way to solve it. Sunny calls it obsession, but Ellory likes to call it a passion. Either way, Sunny makes sure Ellory eats properly and doesn’t become too obsessed when she has her slips.
Harmony Eaglewood (15 y/o)- She is the Eaglewood Princess, part of a famous mage family who has participated in the Redstone Tourney for centuries. Although she very much denies it, she and Sunny have a lot more in common than she would like to admit.
one fun fact: She doesn’t want to let her family down so she works hard in every aspect of life. Her efforts seem to pay off because she has mastered three styles of magic: wind, plant, and fire. And naturally, having a grasp over more than one style of magic at her age classifies her as a prodigy.
one quirk: A massive windstorm could sweep her away, but somehow her ponytail will still remain in tact.
Cool stuff you can expect: Freshmen year, every mage gets to go out into the Shrieking Hollows in search of a familiar (an animal to create a magical bond with). Having a familiar means having a magical creature who will dedicate themselves to their mage, and vice versa. During the process, their magic combines and they form a mental link. The link allows them to communicate mentally and sense one another’s magical signature.
Mages who form strong connections with their familiar start taking on certain attributes of theirs. So, if your familiar is a wolf you’ll have their sharp sense of smell, sight, intuition, etc. Mages can also take control of their familiar’s body for espionage missions.
Status: The first draft is near completion (currently on chapter 46). After it’s finished I’ll work on editing, and then I’ll be searching for beta readers.
Expected Word Count: 100-120k (currently at 100k)
And real quick, I want to give a shoutout to @sleepyowlwrites Thanks for creating this wip intro template!

Tell me you’re a writer, without telling me you’re a writer.
Me (watching a horror movie): I wonder how the author described that tree in the novel…
Brb, just found out Helluva boss has episode 2 out
Trauma.
When the room had cleared, Sunny glanced at Harmony. “Hey.”
“Hey.” Harmony closed her locker and draped her duffle over her shoulder. She looked Sunny up and down, then down and up, frowning. “You look like shit.”
A laugh threatened to come up, but Sunny couldn’t find the energy to release it. “You say the sweetest things.” she deadpanned.
Harmony smiled, softly. “Seriously. You should get your shoulder checked out.”
“You should get your head looked at.”
“I should.” Harmony rubbed the side of her temple. “I think I might have a concussion, that has to be the reason I keep going through with your crazy plans.”
“Wasn’t this one your idea?”
“See? Your stupidity is contagious.”
An awkward silence filled the air. Sunny cleared her throat. “About earlier…” she trailed off. The words got stuck in her throat. How could she bring up what had happened? What was the protocol for the invasion of privacy Damien had forced upon them? Harmony saw everything. She probably thinks—
“It’s fine.”
Sunny’s eyes shot open. “Huh?”
“We don’t have to talk about it.” Harmony squeezed the strap on her duffle, eyes downcast. “Honestly…I don’t wanna talk about mine either.”
Sunny almost forgot, she wasn’t the only one who had her privacy invaded. “Okay.” she agreed, voice meek.
