I think its interesting to compare how Dustin and Max view Steve. Like of the party, those two have the most meaningful connection with Steve, and both to an extent see him as this older brother figure, but in such different ways. I think its especially apparent in Season 2 when Steve goes out as bait and max says "He's insane" and Dustin goes "He's awesome", because Dustin has never has an older brother, he has nothing to compare to. For him, this super popular guy who he knows only tangentially has put his life on the line for Dustin, which is just about the coolest thing he can think of.

But Max has had an older brother. But Max's older brother would never had protected her, he's the one attacking her. She's just not used to someone actually caring about her enough to put himself in danger for her. Her "He's insane" comes from not just a place of disbelief, but the fact that she's just not used to anyone in her life actually making an effort for her, because obviously her parents aren't looking out for her either. But here comes Steve, who calls her "this random girl" and still fights off Billy for her.

Dustin’s admiration of Steve is based on the fact that he's never had an older brother before. Max's is based on the fact that she has.

I love you female characters who get the undeserved vitriol from fans. I love you female characters who fans completely condemn because of one mistake they made. I love you female characters who fans completely condemn because of one mistake they made as a child. I love you female characters who people blame for ripping apart their ships instead of the larger forces that be. I love you female characters who get all the hate as the male characters who do worse in canon get absolutely none. I love you female characters who get hated on because they told a man “no.”
