Some of this fandom is so cancelled by me right now!

I have been stewing in this since last night and am now going to rant!

**I’m going to use a lot of screen shots from people who already put my thoughts into existence, all links to posts used are in the bottom**

1. Are Anne and Gilbert acting out of character from the original source material and 90s series, yes AND THAT’S OK good in fact! Because honestly while their relationship was very typical of the time it is neither entirely healthy nor appropriate for today’s audience! I think the whole point of what Moira’s doing is to help the next generation to be more socially conscious (indigenous peoples story line and consent story lines) and also participate in more healthy relationships (no ignoring someone for five years and no flirting with people just to make others jealous) - - so I saw a post that said Anne not realizing her love for Gilbert till she almost lost him shaped their view on love and relationships and that is a problem because that is not healthy love and kids need to learn that, Anne clinging to her romantic ideals also isn’t healthy as “romantic love” as defined in books like Frankenstein is obsessive love

2. Gilbert courting Winnie is totally understandable

Some Of This Fandom Is So Cancelled By Me Right Now!

Someone else said that him inviting Winnie to the fair where she’d definitely meet Anne was stupid (oh and quick side note clarification Gilbert did not invite Winnies parents she did and he is flattered to meet them because of the status -also normal- and he was shocked when Bash said that meant she was considering marriage), but still that whole logic just infuriates me! What he’s just supposed to put his life on hold while Anne figures her emotions out and stops stomping on him intentionally and unintentionally. And the “he has to know how she feels” argument, LIKE HELL HE DOES! Every time they have any kind of anything the girl is either berating him or running away from him! I mean look at this poor boy!

*not to mention that the whole reason why Gilbert was so bold during the dance rehearsal was because Anne held his gaze, her not shying from his heart eyes is what gave him the confidence and giddiness during the dance and she didn’t do that here

Some Of This Fandom Is So Cancelled By Me Right Now!

and y’all claiming he doesn’t deeply care about Anne or isn’t showing heart eyes is laughable

Not to mention that Winifred is definitely picking up on things like during the introductions where Gilbert doesn’t know how to title her towards Anne and also when she stared after Gilbert when he followed Anne

3. Gilbert and the Non-Consensual kiss

Gilbert Blythe’s Confused Feelings - An Analysis (Part 8)

Episode 8

One of things I love about the final episodes in a season is the clarity that comes to many of the characters. Loose ends are tied up and resolutions occur. In regards to Gilbert’s confusion not all is cleared up but things are beginning to get a little simpler for him. He now knows that he loves Anne and that he wants to be with her. However, there is still a bit of a jumbled mess he’s caught up in that needs to be resolved so let’s see if we can see where he stands with his own thoughts and feelings.

There are three significant scenes I want to expound on. Let’s start with the study scene at Miss Stacy’s home. Gilbert and Anne are sitting side by side, interestingly enough, and discussing their dismay at the burning of the school. They begin talking about what they want from their future. Then, much later as they are studying, Jane drags Ruby over to have Anne talk some sense into her as she is too distracted by romance to study. This gets everyone talking about Gilbert’s presumed engagement to Winifred. As they are talking Gilbert sneaks a sidelong glance at Anne, and this is very much a ploy to see her reaction. He wants to know what she thinks. Remember, that last episode he got his first clue that Anne might be interested in him, so you can bet your ass he’s been looking for more clues.

Gilbert Blythes Confused Feelings - An Analysis (Part 8)

The next scene has two significant moments in which Gilbert finds some clarity and then lands into a world of misunderstanding. The first is when he joins his classmates at the ruins of their school and walks up to see Anne dancing on a log of some sort. He is utterly enraptured by her. This boy literally just came from a classy dinner at the family’s home of the girl he is courting, and here he is staring dumbstruck at a drunk girl who just portrayed a pirate to a bunch of drunk teenagers as if she is some sort of goddess.

The way the scene is shot is also meant to show us Anne from Gilbert’s perspective. The way the fire behind her makes her hair glow and the embers seem to rise from her. Her movements are graceful and ethereal. The noise of the other kids are drowned out by music meaning Gilbert is deaf to them as he stares up longingly at Anne. Once again he wants her and he knows it.

Gilbert Blythes Confused Feelings - An Analysis (Part 8)

The next part of this scene is when Gilbert falls into a pit of misunderstanding that, love him we may, he honestly dug himself into. I don’t know if he realizes that she’s a little drunk or if he’s too caught up in his dilemma to really notice, but he ends up telling her about his dinner with the Roses and how Mr. Rose offered to sponsor him for Sorbonne as well as giving him his blessing to propose to Winnie.

He then tells Anne, “I don’t know what to do.” But we know that that’s not what he means. He is not asking Anne for advice, if he wanted advice he probably would have gone to Bash. He knows he wants to be with Anne, so what he wants is for her to tell him she loves him and not to marry Winnie. When Anne begins to list all the things that’s in store for him and then says she doesn’t understand what’s holding him back he tells her “Just…one thing.” Then, he stares at her.

Now, as viewers we shake our heads and make fun of the fact that he literally did not make himself clear with a drunk girl and then took her stuttered exclamations as denial, but let’s see this from his point of view. There was never any hardcore evidence that she liked him, for him to see, and though her sentences were incomplete and nonsensical, she delivered them by yelling and actually sounded a little enraged. As viewers we know that’s because she’s shocked, drunk and tends to be dramatic, to Gilbert he probably thinks she is saying it’s ridiculous for them to be together.

Gilbert Blythes Confused Feelings - An Analysis (Part 8)

Also the fact that he tells Bash that he asked Anne if there was a chance for them, even though he didn’t actually say those exact words, tells us that Gilbert thought Anne was aware of what he was implying. And I think it goes deeper in which I think Gilbert believes that Anne actually knows how he feels about her despite not having told her in so many words. Maybe he believes he’s been too obvious at times or maybe it’s because his feelings for her have become so overwhelmingly clear that he assumes she can see them, too. Whatever the logic behind his thinking he has again misunderstood Anne and therein lies his confusion.

Hope you enjoyed! Once episodes 9 and 10 are up I will continue my analysis. Hopefully I can change the title to Gilbert Blythe’s No Longer Confused Feelings come finale.

I’m sad Gilbert never saw story club house

Thanks a lot Billy

I think Gilbert would have loved it. How cute would it have been if they had their first kiss there. BIG SAD

WAIT. Gilbert isn’t a take notice guy allegedly. But oh boy oh boy if he somehow rebuilt that thing...he wouldn’t be the one proposing

Let’s face it, he would totally do it
