Your girl friends all have plans with their partners, leaving you alone and drunk… which leads you to call up an old flame.

The guy you shared a few classes with during undergrad and then somehow your friend groups mingled for a while, but then graduation came, before you had plucked up enough courage to ask him out, because fuck societal gender norms, and that you hadn’t talked to in a few years? Yeah, stellar idea.

So you do the obvious thing and hang up.

▸ A/N: I had posted this under a different user a while back and I’m finally bringing it back yay! This was one of my favorites to write and it had been written for bangtan book club’s mafia prompt. Marked as NC-17 to be safe :)

With blood-soaked hands, Jeongguk lets his gun clatter to the ground, the sound of metal against concrete barely audible with how hard his heart is beating in his chest. It thumps and pounds, thundering its demands to be released from its shackles of misery. But this chain—death—is inevitable, unfixable. A permanent carving upon his heart that has left a hollowness in its place.

Rain pours from the sky, blurring the bright city lights behind them that shine none of their guidance into the dark alley they are hidden in. Three men, two guns, one survivor. The risk comes with his line of work and, though he grows numb over the years towards the number of lives lost, plans spoiled, he supposes death is inescapable even to those he once believed as invincible.

“Guk,” the man, his partner, his other half, winces as he struggles to sit up against the wall. His shirt is soaked to the threads with rainwater mixed in with the blood that sinks into the fabric and taints his skin with a murky crimson. “Will you promise me something?”

Promises, promises. There are no guarantees. Nothing can ever be said for sure. He’s learned that the hard way. But Jeongguk does anyway.

A familiar series of pings emitted from your phone, breaking through the peaceful slumber you’d slipped into. Weekends were the only days you could sleep in and therefore you really cherished the moments were you hid underneath the warmth of your blankets and ignored the world. So, rightfully, your eyes snapped open with a disgruntled groan floating from your lips, a wave of irritation hitting your still sleeping brain. You reached out for the device, hand slapping at the bedside table in vain until your fingers wrapped themselves around the cool metal of your phone.

Seven messages from your ex awaited your gaze. Sunghoon had a tendency to call when you ignored his messages for long but you couldn’t be bothered to read through them right at this moment.

With a groan of annoyance, you tossed the phone onto the bed covers and crawled right back into the cocoon of warmth you’d formed. He really didn’t get the hint that you didn’t want to speak to him anymore, did he?

It took a total of two minutes for you to fall right back asleep which was immediately interrupted by blaring sound of your phone ringing. Without a glance at the screen, you grabbed it and hit the answer button.

“What do you want?” The statement came out harsher than you intended, but he deserved it for calling you at ungodly hours on the weekend.

“Well sorry to wake you up, princess,” Responded a familiar voice that instantly dissipated the furnace of anger that had begun to burn within in your chest.

“Jungkook?” You asked, sneaking a peek at your phone.

“The one and only.” You could hear his shit-eating grin from here.

  It was when he was only 5 years old that Jungkook met you. His parents had enrolled him into a local dance class in the hopes that it would encourage him to open up to people and perhaps draw him out of his quiet shell.

  While a sweet and outgoing boy amongst his family, he reverted to quietness when meeting new people and he seemed to intensely dislike groups of people. It pained his parents, as their little sunshine boy was so shy that he hadn’t even made a friend yet.

  They’d had noticed, however, how much he enjoyed dancing in the privacy of their own home. He would dance along to the latest music on the radio or television with wild abandon. In particular they noticed how it always brought the sweetest smile to his face at the joy he felt. As such, they sought out dance classes in their price bracket and sent him along with tentative hopes.

| You were considered a miracle child. The umbilical cord was still wrapped around your neck hours before delivery but you had entered the world safe and sound. Your parents were extremely excited. Your parents’ numbers were in the high eighties and considering the fact that your brother’s and sister’s numbers were 94 and 96 respectively, they were hoping you’d be a 98. With you being a high ninety, they’d be eligible for the high-potential stipend, allowing your family to live like royalty. For the duration of 9 months, all your parents did was plan ahead. Their dreams were about to become reality and it was all because of you.

Their dreams came crashing down a month later as they saw the small number buzzing above your head; a meager 4. They got a DNA test done (multiple times actually) but no matter what they did, they were forced to face the truth; you were undeniably theirs. The number 4 in Mandarin had a phonetic sound similar to that of the character that represented death and that’s what you represented. You represented the death of your parents’ dreams. You were a beautiful baby but every time your parents looked at you, all they could think about was what could have been.

For the past 20 years, you felt like you were the black sheep of the family. Well, obviously you were but you couldn’t understand how the people you shared the same blood with could treat you so coldly. You were often the scapegoat for your siblings and the reason for embarrassment for your parents. It was so painful to live in that house. It was difficult to watch your siblings go on to prestigious academic institutions while you were sent to the local vocational school. You loved knowledge just as much as they did and if you were given the chance, you felt like you’d be able to be just as successful. You had spent many nights in your family’s study room, reading all the materials that your siblings had brought home from school but you knew no matter how much you tried, everyone would see you as nothing but a 4.
