I Believe In My Heart Of Hearts If Beffica Wasn't A Woman That The Fandom Wouldn't Hate Her So Much.
I believe in my heart of hearts if Beffica wasn't a woman that the fandom wouldn't hate her so much. I don't know whether it's because people receive women characters differently or because the 'mean girl' stereotype is so baked into our heads but if she were a male character I truly believe everyone would be obsessed with her. At least that's just my experience in fandom.
I understand that we're all very attached to Filbo but the way that fandoms act like specifically female characters are evil for being rude or mean is incredibly common and all encompassing.

Yes and no. like I think there's plenty of interpretation but also I feel like you can gleam some kind of intent from how people draw certain characters.
The obvious example is the Fizzlebeans clearly having poc hairstyles, I would feel it would be strange for somebody to not incorporate that into their humanised design and might reflect a lack of education into the significance of such design features / hairstyles in general and representing diversity - like you don't HAVE to but I might give you the side eye.
Then with body type especially, I think allot of people draw characters skinny by default and if you were to draw all the grumpuses as skinny I would think 'oh this person doesn't really draw diverse body types' because allot of them are pretty round, like just shape wise..
So I think you can get funky with it, experiment and headcanon however you want but I think like, if you have a lineup of grumpus humanised designs that can reflect how diverse your art is as a whole in my opinion because it has so many good opportunities to represent different kinds of people :3 but I feel that way about art in general so I'm probably biased.
edit: maybe 'might give you the side eye' is a bit harsh I would not automatically assume it's malicious but I feel like being aware of such things is pretty important in art circles and the fact that some people WOULDN'T be aware that certain hairstyles and such are racially significant speaks to a deficit in knowledge that I feel like we should really be working to overcome instead of just brushing off y'know? so like again do what you want but I do think it reflects on a wider thing than the thing itself
same with the body type stuff, it's not a PERSONAL failing to draw non-fat characters by default! that's how most of us are taught, but I think encouraging people to try more than that is positive. I don't think 'oh ths person doesn't draw fat characters' and think it's out of malice i just think it's sad that that's kind of the normal thing. Like I wouldn't be upset if they didn't but I would be happy if they did. Hope that's clear
tldr: i would prefer if the implied body and racial diversity that I feel is implied within the cast were represented but it's not people's fault if that's not their default but we should strive towards diverse design rep in general. <- realised i wrote 6 paragraphs
