“How did you move past it?” You ask, scanning the eyes of the man sitting across a small bar booth. “The feeling of not belonging…in your own skin.”

He heaves a heavy sigh and scratches at the back of his neck.

“I’m definitely stronger now, but I’m not sure I can ever move past it.”

“Oh?”

“Instead I’ve—well, I guess I’ve accepted it. It’s a part of who I am.”

You nod and recall the feeling of insecurity. It creeps up occasionally, consuming your mind with thoughts of self-loathing inadequacy. It’s such a lonely feeling. So ostracizing, and yet, so many others feel the same exact way. But him? It’s hard to believe this handsome stranger could ever feel less than exceptional.

Earlier in the night, you sat alone at the bar. It had become a nightly ritual before your long commute home from the office. You’d get the same drink, sit in the same chair, scroll through your phone and then eventually drive home to start the process over again. However, tonight was going to be different, and you could feel a shift the second he sat next to you.

“Hi, I’m Jimin,” he said with a cute crooked smile and shook your hand. He had the tiniest dimple that peeked through his cheek. “Mind if I buy you a drink and talk your ear off?” You nodded shyly in response and felt a pulse of heat flow through your body when you looked up to meet his welcoming eyes.
