Hello! I hope this is isn’t an annoying question. I wanna better my art, and I adore your artstyle. Any tips dear?

it's not annoying! thank you for enjoying my work! i didn't go to school specifically for art or anything so i'm very good at giving advice out but here's some general things i've tried to keep in mind over the years. i know this doesn't feel very tied to style development but this is how i've thought of how i wanted to draw over time.

Enjoy drawing — How you do this will vary. Not every artist draws out of love but it's what that I personally care about for myself. Drawing is something that brings me comfort and entertainment and that's a feeling that I try to put above everything else because it's what's kept me drawing for this long. I think when striving for improvement, it can be easy to feel down on what you can't do, so enjoying the process can go a long way. It's way harder to get better when you don't want to draw at all or if drawing makes you feel bad about yourself.

Try to identify what you want to accomplish — This involves considering if you want to be a professional or if you just wanna draw for yourself, what do you enjoy drawing, do you have a message you want to tell, and things of the like. You don't have to have all of the answers all at once, but no matter what it's best to be honest about it. This is for you so there's no need to try and make it sound nice. Some of the things that I know about myself are that I'd ideally like to make a living off of my work, so I should always be looking at new opportunities for my career, and that money matters me to me and is going to be part of my relationship to art. I like drawing anime art and it's the type of style I enjoy looking at the most. I enjoy doing fanart here and there but it doesn't come close to rivalling my love for my original characters. I want to visually represent them better, but I also want to do a better job at telling their stories through my art so they don't only live in my head. I want to represent my cultural background better because I've pushed it down and have experienced a lot of disconnect towards it as a kid. Knowing these things helps me prioritize my projects and make concrete steps towards these things.

Always strive to improve — For a long time I'd compare myself to the people I admired and wanted to improve at a comparable rate to them, but this was limiting my growth to however they developed. Currently, I always maintain my desire to be a better artist by doing my best to acknowledge my shortcomings. Just a couple examples of this are that I struggle with perspective and don't challenge myself enough at drawing environments and poses at the same time, I struggle drawing faces and lack understanding in their structure, my linework is stiff and inefficiently done which makes art more time consuming, etc. Through identifying these things, it makes it easier to figure out what I need to do to get better in, similar to the last bullet. In my spare time I've been learning how to design/draw rooms at different angles, getting back into regularly doing gesture and head drawings, and more.

If art is something you like doing, do what you can to protect the joy you get from it — This means different things for different people (Does social media make you feel bad? Does your friend group support your artistic development and does that matter to you if they do? Is this fandom space good for you or are you reliant on the validation that comes from it?). Something this definitely includes though is taking care of your body. As a teenager I'd feel pressured by my slow improvement and inability to get my ideas down + be additionally absorbed in my work due to having a very all-consuming focus that made me forget everything else. While I caught my carpal tunnel in its early stages and went to physical therapy to help it, my wrist has still never been the same and my capacity to do a lot of the things I want to do is notably different than it used to be. Your health and happiness will always matter no matter if you draw or not as well, so prioritizing that will always be rewarding.
