Washington State Becomes First to Adopt a Statewide Strategy to Protect Bumble Bees
Washington has just become the first state in the United States to develop a statewide strategy to conserve bumble bees. The strategy, focusing on eight bumble bee species, was created with leadership from the Xerces Society and informed by data collected through the Pacific Northwest Bumble Bee Atlas, a Xerces community science program.
The Western Bumble Bee (Bombus Occidentalis), One Of The Focal Species Of The Conservation Strategy,

The western bumble bee (Bombus occidentalis), one of the focal species of the conservation strategy, is currently under review for listing under the Endangered Species Act. This specimen was collected on western mountain aster (Symphyotrichum spathulatum) at a site on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest south of Cle Elum and photographed as part of the Pacific Northwest Bumble Bee Atlas. After recording information about the bee it was released, unharmed. (Photo: Ed Lisowski.)

"Walkable city" is not "City where to have to walk everywhere."

"Walkable city" is.

Sidewalks big enough to fit you, your stroller, your wheelchair, your guide dog, or anything else you need when you're getting from one place to another.

Safe crosswalks frequent enough so you don't need to walk in traffic.

Bike lanes to keep bikes out of foot traffic and car traffic.

Accessible and affordable public transit.

Cities where the essentials are close enough you can travel on foot (or in wheelchair)

Cities where it's reasonable to be able to get from point a to point b without requiring you, yourself, to drive

People get so caught up in the "Walkable" part of the term and like to spout "Walkable cities are abelist because not everyone can walk".

Bitch. The modern city structure is abelist because not everyone can drive. And classist because not everyone can afford a car and it's pretty damn impossible to get a job if you don't have a car.

Walkable cities are cities where people can reasonably get from pointA to pointB without requiring a motor vehicle.

"But fae. Disabled people have issues using the paths in modern cities." Bitch abled people can barely use the paths in modern cities. That's kind of the fucking problem.

Also walkable cities have fucking benches. Not only for disabled people. But sometimes you just twist your ankle and need to sit for a moment.

"Put fae. If you have benches, homeless people will sleep on them."

Then get fucking housing for the homeless. Problem solved. They'll sleep in their nice warm homes instead of on the benches.

Solarpunks on Discord

I have stumbled upon YET another solarpunk community on discord but they seem really young and peppy and friendly and have little committees and have been holding actual meetings so they can collectively create a zine and blog and such. It’s pretty cute.

American-centric so far, but in case anyone is interested in joining here’s an invite code

https://discord.gg/vKjcsQhvSc

I become exhausted when post-consumer/reuse ideas become trendy because I'll see someone on the community page asking where they can get 20 1-gallon milk jugs for their indoor gardening projects and the answer is obviously the waste bin, after drinking 20 gallons of milk. But they dont mean that, they mean where can they buy them new and already clean. But the point of using gallon jugs is to make clever use of things you already have, not to buy more.

Like when pallet gardening was a thing but people wanted brand new clean looking pallets instead of going to the hardware store loading dock and asking if they could take broken and used ones.

Like yes we get that ot looks cute and it's a solution to a problem but the point of it was to use things that would have been otherwise tossed.
