jinwoo sung x fem.reader
notes: unedited; canon divergent...
sung jinwoo always knew that deep down, he would forever belong to cha hae-in-
so when the system provided him a message that told him he would know of his fated one within a week's time, the shadow monarch felt a bit concerned.
he kept on staring blankly at the message that popped up within his periphery, eyebrows furrowed in utter and complete confusion. what was the system trying to tell him?
surely, it would reveal to him that cha hae-in was his fated one right? there was no mistaking that he felt so comfortable around her. he had gotten stronger for her, even protected her from the dangers of the world.
he recalls all the fond memories he had together with her, and the many nights he spent laying in bed with her- having late night conversations about nothing and everything all at once.
when she confessed to him after joining his guild, jinwoo swore that he became so ecstatic. never once had he felt such immeasurable joy before in his life.
"cha hae-in is everything to me."
jinwoo found himself stating with confidence, simply ignoring the system's message to him as he swipes the transparent blue screen away from him.
it was probably nothing to worry about. after all...
he was certain the system would flash him an image of cha hae-in, further confirming his beliefs that they were meant to be together in this universe- and each and every one beyond and in between.
the young hunter stopped worrying about it then, the strange message all but disappearing from his mind when he receives a call from his beloved girlfriend. all too eager to talk to her, he answers on the second ring.
"sarang...hello, how was your day?"
{ ... }
the days pass by him in a blur, with jinwoo feeling like he was on top of the world. after enjoying his date together with cha hae-in, they spend the night together in bed. he listens to her talking about plans for their upcoming mission, and their date afterwards.
"so i was wondering, did you want to try out this new restaurant with me?"
he was ready to answer her when a sudden message pops up from his periphery. jinwoo bites down on his bottom lip, unable to answer her as his eyes take in the screen that he knew hae-in couldn't see.
"jinwoo?" her soft voice calls out to him, yet all he could see was the system's flashing message hovering over him.
the shadow monarch's fated one...
a morbid curiosity fills him, and the young man was confident that it would flash hae-in's name, or her face. he waits with bated breath, watching the screen flash once more before revealing a picture-
a picture that did not display cha hae-in's beautiful face.
instead, he came face to face with a different young woman, one who had a more unique beauty in comparison to hae-in. his mouth turns dry, taking in her features and the color of her eyes. he was only able to catch a glimpse of the strange, new girl and her name before the screen fades to black.
3RR0R 3RR0R 3RR0R 333333333333333333
a slew of error messages were seen, causing jinwoo's eyes to water slightly as his head began to pound, feeling overwhelmed-
and it all stopped, immediately replacing the girl's picture with cha hae-in's profile and her name printed below in neat lettering.
cha hae-in.
jinwoo felt cold now, unable to think clearly as he kept going back to that strange image of that girl- the woman that wasn't cha hae-in. for some odd reason, just recalling her photo was enough to make jinwoo's heart pound.
"jin!" a sudden cry of his name breaks him out of his reveries, with his silvery eyes meeting with hae-in's stormy gaze. "are you alright? what's wrong, you look like you've seen a ghost."
"it's nothing." there was a sudden hoarseness in jinwoo's voice, and he was praying that she would not realize that something was innately wrong with him. ever since the system showed him a picture of that strange girl before switching back to hae-in, he knew that he was caught in a turmoil.
what did this mean?
who are you?
but he bites back those feelings, simply taking cha hae-in within his embrace, hoping that her close proximity would force his heart to remember who it truly belonged to-
"jinwoo?"
"let's just go to sleep, sarang. it's been a long day..."
he refuses to accept that visions of the strange girl were what invaded his dreams now, making his life a bit more complicated than it already was.
{ ... }
months had passed since that time, and he struggled to find answers.
all throughout his mind, he kept seeing that picture... repeating the name over and over again, the name of his first 'fated one.'
he repeats it so many times, but always away from his girlfriend. and he honestly felt so guilty, putting such a distance between them. she was the first one, the one who was by his side and even admitted her love to-
yet why did the system show him a different girl? was it really an error-
or was he the one who made the mistake?
he didn't know what to do. all he knew was that he couldn't keep ignoring cha hae-in's texts and calls-
and in order to do that, he had to get closure.
he had to find her.
so he spent yet another day searching, after he finished his missions and duties as a guild master, he explores the streets of seoul, never once daring to stop until he could see the mysterious woman.
just as jinwoo was crossing the street, he catches sight of a familiar head of hair, watching the rich color of it shining from beneath the sunlight. jinwoo's mind went blank, tasting the faint scent of her perfume and strawberry shampoo when she passes by him without a second glance.
and he knew that he was doomed then-
because you were beautiful.
{ ... }
you felt happy, simply going on with your day as you decided to go to your favorite bookstore. it had been a rough week for you, with your job becoming more stressful than ever.
along with your normal job, you moonlight as a healer for the hunter's association. you weren't part of a guild, but helped other guilds when needed. because of the fact that you were basically balancing two jobs, you end up not having as much free time.
so, you decided to treat yourself to something nice when you did have some free time.
in just a couple of minutes, you enter your favorite bookstore and began browsing for something nice to read. your exploration takes you to near the back wall, where you saw a book that you liked.
just as your hand reaches up to grab it, you found that someone else takes it away from you, making you frown in response.
a word of protest was about to escape from your parted lips when it suddenly dies within your throat. in front of you was a tall young man, and he had to be the most beautiful man you had ever laid eyes on. with soft, wavy strands of jet black and and grey eyes, you were captivated by him.
he scans the cover of the book that you wanted and flashes you a tiny smile. "did you want this?"
you had to fight back the heat that was threatening to dye your cheeks upon hearing the sound of his voice. "y-yes, i did want this book, but..."
your question dies on your lips when he flashes you a perfect smile. "no problem, let me buy this book for you then."
you were taken aback by his sudden kindness. "ah, no! you don't need to do that!"
"but i insist."
"i can b-buy it myself."
"consider it a gift."
"w-what if i want a different book?"
"then i guess i'll buy you the other book, too."
you were feeling flustered now, knowing that this beautiful stranger would not back down. "o-okay... fine then..."
he gives you a triumphant smile, suddenly stepping closer to you as he leans down to get a better look at your face.
"do you wish to repay me...?"
"y-yes..." you tell him, feeling your breath get stuck within your throat.
"then, tell me your name..."
his tone was soft, yet there was a hard edge in his eyes, appearing like he was hiding something from you. with a shiver, you tell him the syllables that make up your name, with him repeating your name in a bit of a seductive tone-
one that was a bit too intimate for you.
he appears torn for a brief second, meeting your eyes before looking away from you. "my name's jinwoo sung..."
"jinwoo." you test his name against your lips, and there was a sudden intense expression seen within his gaze.
"can you do one more thing for me as repayment?" jinwoo suddenly asks you, giving you little chance to respond as you could only nod at him.
"...join me for some coffee."
and who were you to say no to this gorgeous stranger?
{ ... }
his mind was telling him that this was wrong-
but oh, did it feel so right being with you like this.
he offers you the cup of coffee he bought before sitting across from you, already growing intrigued by you as the minutes pass.
you looked adorable, sitting across from him while clutching your newly purchased book close to your chest. he found your mannerisms to be adorable, and he couldn't keep his eyes off of you.
"so, tell me about yourself."
jinwoo tries to reign in his emotions, doing his best to put on a nonchalant front as he willed his heart to stop beating so fast for you ( regardless of how hard it was ).
you end up giving him a kind smile, "i currently moonlight as a healer."
"is that so? and your rank?"
"ah, close to a b-rank, it's hard, but i don't mind helping hunters and their goals on eliminating the monsters that enter our world."
"yeah...?" jinwoo tries to stop his heart from beating too fast, but he could not deny that you were far lovelier up close and in person. the sweet scent of your perfume was enough to get him drunk off of you-
but he had to stop.
he had to find reasons to not want you- to hate you even.
because could he do this to cha hae-in? could he admit to her that the system gave him such a strange message, showing him your face instead of hers while calling you his fated one?
jinwoo didn't think he could bear it.
so he asks questions, a million questions that got personal.
what's your family like?
what are your goals?
what is your deepest desire and dreams?
and shockingly, he found that you had answered every single one of his questions with complete honesty-
and how they matched up perfectly with his own goals and ideals.
you, who had a loving family that raised you with care and a younger sibling.
you, who had a strong desire to protect and save others, which was why you trained so hard to be a healer.
you, who's deepest desire was to be loved and start a family with your fated one.
it was all too much for him.
jinwoo stands from his seat then, unable to handle being in your presence for a moment longer.
"i'm sorry, this was a mistake, an error. just... forget about me."
"w-what? jinwoo, what do you mean, why did you-"
"i have a fiancée, her name is cha hae-in, and i love her deeply." jinwoo watches as a hurt expression crosses your features, willing for the pang in his chest to go away. "i only wanted to speak to you out of mere curiosity, nothing more and nothing less. you can keep that book as my gift to you."
he looks away from you, not daring to look back at you even as his heart felt like it was being ripped apart.
{ ... }
the next several months were like agony to him, and he could not seem to think straight.
his mind kept on replaying the confused, and hurt expression that warps your beauty. he could still see the tears brimming in your eyes-
because he had hurt you out of nowhere, for seemingly no good reason.
and not only that, but he was hurting cha hae-in as well.
jinwoo knew he had to come clean to her, that he had never been the same once the system did that to him. because his heart was in such a turmoil as of late, he went all out on his explorations of the dungeon, ripping apart each and every one of the monsters he comes across with his legions of shadows.
only when he was certain that every beast was eliminated did he finally stop, coming back home near the early hours of dawn. the moment he opens his door, he was met face to face with cha hae-in.
tears were brimming in her eyes when she stands from her spot on the couch, finally confronting him.
"jinwoo, what's gotten into you? you've been acting so distant with me, and it... it hurts, jinwoo."
he feels his heart twisting in response to her pain, yet he could do little to reverse what had already happened-
jinwoo had fallen out of love with her...
and he could not stop thinking about you.
jinwoo lifts up a hand in a poor attempt to try and comfort her, yet... he could not bring himself to do so. with a sigh of her name, jinwoo gets down on his knees for her.
"you will not forgive me for this, but, you have to know."
he then confesses to her about the system and the messages it had been giving him, going straight to the point as the system showed him that his fated one was not her at first, but you instead.
"i only caught a glimpse of her and her name, b-but then, it faded to black and revealed you to me. but by that point, i was already too far gone..."
"i actively searched for her, doing my best to convince myself that when the system flashed another woman's picture, that it was a mistake. that there was no way she could be the one for me when i have been with you for so long."
"but when i found her... god, i knew it was over."
tears were streaming down cha hae-in's face, turning her eyes red as she physically slapped him across his face. jinwoo could feel the stinging pain, his face already beginning to bruise when he weakly calls out to her.
"cha hae-in, i'm sorry, i'm so sorry-"
"you were right. we- we're... we're over sung jinwoo." he could tell that cha hae-in was struggling to keep her voice even, anguish painting her tone when she screams at him, "get out, just...GO!"
not wishing to hurt her for a second longer, jinwoo stands back to his full height, unable to meet her gaze as she began to sob uncontrollably. his heart was breaking into two, forcing himself to step outside of the apartment complex and into the pouring rain.
he felt so broken now, and it was while he was at his lowest point that he heard a voice mocking him.
my, humans are such fickle creatures after all.
he freezes, not even feeling the needle-like rain anymore as he clenches his fists in response.
"you... you did this to me?!"
a cruel laughter was all that was heard, making jinwoo's eyes glow an iridescent violet as he looks around him, his shadow already shifting in response to his turmoil.
"tell me, WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO ME?!"
isn't it obvious? for the fun of it all.
jinwoo was breathing heavily, listening as the voice seemed to laugh, surrounding him with the sound.
i did it as a mere test, to see if your heart would falter for even the slightest bit. there are no such things as soulmates or fated ones, since they are a mere fairytale made up by humans.
you never had a fated one; i simply flashed you that woman's picture to see how you would react. you have given me quite the show, shadow monarch.
his blood was rushing through his ears, somehow finding a strange sense of comfort within the system's words.
"tell me where she lives."
...
"i said...show me where she lives at this very moment."
it takes a few minutes, and jinwoo was close to breaking the system had it not been for a new notification appearing before him, showing an address that he was certain would lead him back to you.
{ ... }
you couldn't bring yourself to read the book jinwoo had purchased for you-
because each time you would look at it, you would begin to burst out into tears.
why was he so cruel to you?
and why did he act like he was interested in you, only to rip apart your hopes when he tells you about his fiancée...
gods, were you really this stupid?
much like how you were feeling, your heart was still crying like the storm settled outside of your apartment. the rain kept pelting at your windows, and you found yourself falling into a deeper depression.
"i can't stop thinking about him."
your voice comes out as broken, unable to smile weeks later, after he had left you so suddenly. you let out soft sniffles while holding your blanket close.
perhaps you should order something to eat, to help with cheering yourself up.
the heavens knew just how little you had been taking care of yourself, which made you feel even more pathetic-
jinwoo wasn't supposed to mean anything to you- you knew that for a fact-
but still, you couldn't stop yourself from hoping.
he just felt so perfect for you... with his kind eyes and easy smile-
it was difficult to not fall in love with him.
shaking your head, you go back to your phone to order your favorite foods, paying for it all as you prayed that eating such delicious meals will help with cheering you up. once you were done ordering, you decided to wash your face, wanting to cleanse yourself of your tears as you did your best to feel happy once more.
about ten minutes have passed when you heard someone knocking at your door. you look at the clock on your wall and frown.
did takeout orders usually come this fast?
not even questioning it, you answer the door-
only to come face to face with jinwoo himself, holding a beautiful bouquet in his hand.
you gasp and shut the door on his face on purpose, but could not fully close it when he stops you by placing his foot against your door. he was too strong, and you were unable to push him out when he forces his way into your apartment.
he was soaking wet, his chest heaving with uneven breaths, making it appear like he had been running in the rain. you wanted to ask him what he was doing here, yet no words would come out.
jinwoo continues gazing at you, with a strange, soft look in his eyes. "the only error i have made was ever hurting you."
you back away from him, watching as jinwoo shuts your door completely before holding your gaze.
"the system be damned, what i feel for you did not come from anything false or synthetic. what i feel for you is real."
your lips begin to tremble as you shakily call out his name, unsure of what he was talking about. "j-jinwoo."
"i love you, okay? i stopped thinking clearly the moment i saw your face again."
his sudden confession makes you freeze in your spot, allowing him to come closer to you as he held you in his powerful embrace.
"you're all i can think about... and... you fit me so well." jinwoo's eyes were practically burning for you, and he keeps looking at you with such a desperation that you could not bring yourself to look away from him.
"so please...forgive me. let me love you like i've always wanted to- like i've always felt like i needed to the moment we had crossed paths with each other."
the silence that was settled between you and jinwoo was deafening, but you had to force yourself to speak first. "t-this isn't a dream? you're really here... standing in front of me, confessing your love for me...?"
jinwoo says nothing, simply stepping closer to you as he presses the lovely bouquet against your chest, silently beckoning you to take it. with a slight nod, you take it, suddenly feeling jinwoo taking a hold of your free hand as he presses the palm of it over his chest.
you could feel the rapid thrumming of his heartbeat, knowing that it was racing for you as you look up at him in awe.
"jinwoo..."
"these feelings are no lie... i can't live without you, so please- give me a chance to love you."
the moment you give jinwoo a nod was the moment jinwoo swoops in to give you a bruising kiss, not caring if he crushed your flowers when he brings you into his chest, holding you so tightly that you knew, even without words being spoken, that he would never let you go ever again.

a.n. - i remember reading a ya novel that had this premise of your soulmates / partner being chosen for you via the government, and the main heroine gets a glimpse of someone different that wasn't her expected soulmate (aka her childhood best friend) and ends up falling in love with him lksjdfksf yeah this fic was self indulgent and was completely inspired by that novel. i cannot remember the name of the novel, but if you readers happen to remember it, let me know!
i wrote this in a dreamy haze, because i have fallen so deeply in love with jinwoo sung, so i apologize for any mistakes 🥹

THAWED | LYNEY X FEM!READER SERIES

THAWED (MASTERLIST) — the lyney childhood-enemies-to-frenemies-to-lovers-kinda series that no one asked for, ft. fluff, a whole lot of bickering, flirting, and everything in between
STATUS. short hiatus !!

OTHER INFO.
DISCLAIMER. will contain spoilers. this series will be as dark as genshin lore can be, and this won’t strictly follow genshin’s actual lore—i’ll be making up a lot of stuff for the sake of the fic so there will be inaccuracies, NOT CANON COMPLIANT!! there’s no previous director, the timeline of events will be vastly different. each chapter will have their own warnings as well, so keep an eye out for that!
NOTES. hello, everyone !!!!!!! welcome to my lyney series inspired by taylor’s reputation album. how it works is each chapter will be titled after each song off of the album as u can see below,,, hope u enjoy reading as excited i am for rep tv!! :D
tysm to naosaki and kruinka for helping me brainstorm w this fic (and also helping me when i was visibly all over the place because of this series) also kruin u owe me something remember that <3

CHAPTERS.
i — are you ready for it?
The House of the Hearth was perfect. This was where you thrived—where no one else could take this feeling away. But then Lynette became a part of the ‘family’, and with it, she dragged along Lyney.
ii — i don’t wanna hurt you (i just wanna be)
You look more like a soldier than an orphan, Lyney thinks. It’s beautiful in all the wrong ways.
iii — you gotta leave before you get left
Desperately, Lyney melts them away, but your footsteps have already gone out of earshot. It’s an answer in itself: Don’t bother. Take the hint, Lyney; you already messed it up.
iv — for you i would fall from grace
“What now? What do you want me to do? Strut back into their lives and demand all their Fatui secrets as if I never left?”
Aether nestles into his seat. “Prove to me that I can trust them just as much as you do. Who knows, you might get something out of this, too.”
v — you must like me for me
Lyney laughs. It sounds like music that has haunted you for years—and with a new one playing, it’ll torment you for years more. He loosens his grip but keeps you caged in, still. You’re twirled around to face him, and something about his expression has you swallowing thickly.
“You’re even more stunning than I remember, ma chérie.”
vi — look what you made me do
You frown at him, your face upside down in his view. “That was unfair.”
“I have to be if I want to beat you.”
vii — all eyes on you, my magician
He doesn’t take his eyes off you, even once when his fingers reached out to fish out a champagne flute. Lyney still has that stupid smile on his face, the rim of his glass against his lips. You’re hit with the startling realization that you want to kiss him.
Fuck, what?
viii — you’ve ruined my life, by not being mine
“You’re so warm,” you murmur to his skin.
Goosebumps blossom all over his body. Your face brushes against the side of his neck. “Do you hate it?”
“I like it. My hands are cold. Every part of you is warm.”

╰┈➤ ❝ [ We'll Try This Again, Begin Again with Zero. But This Time? I'm Never Letting You Go. ] ¡! ❞
Living felt more like a punishment more than anything. The pain he goes through starts feeling more and more deserving in his eyes. He was pushing himself to the limits when he shouldn't, he's punishing himself over a sin that wasn't really his fault.
But if anyone tells him that, he wouldn't look back at them. He would ignore their concerns.
He has a duty to uphold anyway, a duty that only he can do as a monarch.
Jinwoo has ultimately grown to be a vessel of war thanks to the system.
He didn't really care much, he already placed insurance to his name if anything happens to him.
When he's gone, his remaining family would atleast live off of something.
He has already watched his father die too thanks to the godforsaken monarchs.
What more can he loose?
Over and over again, he puts himself in the battlefield, exhausting himself on purpose, never even sleeping nor eating.
He was just fighting like a dog.
Well, dog's get much more care than what he does to himself, so does it really count?
It doesn't matte,r Jinwoo physically cannot be exhausted.
But mentally? It's a different story.
He wasn't really depressed, at least, that's what he tells himself.
He really felt numb, not exactly sad, not exactly happy either. It's as if his emotions lie in the middle.
Jinwoo felt hollow, completely hollow.
As if he were merely nothing more than a puppet in war.
The only thing that really urges him to move forward is the distant sound of his beloved's voice in the back of his head.
And soon, after he had finally murdered the Monarch of Destruction— He would be granted a wish.
Battered and tired while on the floor, he thought of what he could possibly ask from the rulers.
Thought of?
No, Jinwoo already knew what he wanted.
It was to turn back time.
To meet old friends again, to stop the gates from opening, to have his family whole again
,... To meet you again.
Yes. That's right. All of this was for you anyway.
Jinwoo recalls that memory very clearly, how you were still in the hospital bed and you two were playing a game of cards while he tells you about how he plans to be a hunter soon.
Your words were quite cute really: "I hope Woowoo becomes a really strong man!"
Those silly, innocent words of yours.
Up to this day, he still smiles lovingly whenever he remembers that.
He became this strong not just for himself and his family who needs him, but for you, the brave little soul who endured that illness—
Jinwoo fought for you
And since he is given the opportunity to correct the past, he requiested for time to be rewinded.
Right then and there, a brilliant flash of white would engulf the earth, bathing it in all it's glory. eradicating all traces of the lifeforms and shadows there is to this pathetic universe. For once in a million years, the earth was beautiful again. It looked like a star gleaming along with countless others.
Soon, Jinwoo would wake up to the sound of his baby sister's calling. Jinwoo would sit up, gently smiling at her.
It took a while for everything to sink in, for everything for him to realize that this? All of this was reality.
How badly he wanted to find you in the time he spent, for just a few weeks, he enjoyed being a child again.
Laughing with friends, screaming at others for a vanguard or healer in the pc cafe— He wanted to find you in an instant. But not right now.
He took care of some stuff first.
Your illness wont awaken until then after all.
27 years, he spent time in that goddamn dimensional crack fighting monarchs and all that crap.
When he was done, he finally came home.
Just as he set foot back in earth again, he went straight to the hospital.
April 9th of spring, where the pink petals bloomed and flew around the air— This beautiful but tragic day.
Was the first time you had collapsed and coughed out blood.
It started with your lungs, to your kidneys, to your heart, to everywhere.
You had metastatic cancer.
Coughing up blood was only the start.
And Jinwoo had come home just in time.
He didn't even ask for directions, he just went straight to your hospital room.
He knew this godforsaken place better than the doctors and nurses himself after all.
As he pried open the door, there you were, resting on the bed staring absentmindedly at the pink trees outside your window. When yopu heard the sound of the door, you turned your attention to Jinwoo.
Dazzling and innocent eyes, just as he remembers. Your youthful face, free of any sign of wrinkles. Still chubby and plump that he wanted to just kiss your cheeks all over.
As you called out his name, Jinwoo marched over and embraced you tightly.
"I'm sorry, it took me a while" Jinwoo whispers ever so lovingly as he rubs the b ack of your head affectionately.
You were confused at first, wondering why your best friend is acting all cuddly and sappy when he totally did not disappear off of the face of the earth and come out of nowhere like some sort of boogey man. But regardless, you can't help but notice the traces of tears about to break from lovely grey eyes.
When you reached over to touch his face, his voice broke and he started crying almost instantly.
Panicked and confused, you pulled him to a tight hug.
Jinwoo was crying, and in his tears and broken voice you could hear the amount of anguish he had been bottling up, the brokenness in his heart finally being revealed in the open for you to hear and see. It felt as if Jinwoo was carrying a hundred years worth of burden. And you could do nothing more than to soothe him.
"I'm sorry... Ditching you out of nowhere and acting like a sappy pup wo got kicked" He chokes as he chuckles gently, "I promise, promise, that I won't leave you like that anymore. Just trust me, okay? Here, drink this."
He hands you a weird fantasy-potion thing with red liquid inside. You wanted to deny him of it but Jinwoo stubbornly insisted upon it, as if your life depended on it.
Well, tehnically speaking, it did depended on that potion.
After making sure you gulped down every single drop of the crimson liquid, Jinwoo pressed his forehead against yours.
Mumbling ever so sweetly; "Let's do this again, okay? You and me, goofing around. I'll let you eat as much sweets as you like, I'll show a lot of pretty things. Don't worry about anything else, Woowoo will take care of it."
Somehow, you felt that Jinwoo meant that on a deeper level. You felt like right now, what in front of you wasn't just anyone else, but someone ready to lay down their life for your sake. The person in front of you, you felt as if he was going to follow you to the ends of the earth to the stars above your heads. Somehow, it feels as if his words was a promise that he would follow you wherever you go.
He already lost you once, damned will he be if that happens again.

A Dry Bed
Alastor x Reader (fluff) TW: none! join my discord! ═══ ◈ ══════════ ◈ ══════════ ◈ ══════════ ◈ ═══
It’s nothing new when a violent demon shows up at the doorsteps to the Hazbin Hotel–Charlie’s idea wasn’t a popular one, except to a very niche market of demons. Many came just to cause havoc and make life harder for the already strained employees of the hotel.
This was new, though, you mused to yourself briefly as a fish-headed demon ripped open the door, the hinges squealing in protest. Bubbles of water floated around his body, strings of a magic aura keeping them attached to his form; there was a large one encasing his head like a helmet, making his already fish-eyed features more… well… fish-eyed and distorted.
Most demons weren’t manifested in hell bearing any sort of noticeable power other than sometimes having a decent “full” demon form. So, seeing this fish rearing a set of magical balls of water for attack, for no real reason in particular and with a glint of mania in his eyes, quickly put everybody to their feet and in action.
Alastor was out doing god-knows-what, otherwise this would’ve been over in an instant. The other demons in the hotel were incredibly strong in their own right, but it was undeniable that the power imbalance was… huge. And the immediate chaos that ensued likely would’ve been prevented.
The fish barely hesitated after nearly breaking the front doors, immediately detaching his balls of water and hurling them in every direction. Bottles of booze were shattering, hanging pictures were tumbling, and wooden legs of furniture snapped.
Of course, it was over nearly as soon as it started. With a movement so fast you could hardly watch, Vaggie had the fish pinned down, her foot pressed against his neck and spear pointed at one of his bulging eyes. Her eyes were narrowed so hard, her lips so twisted in a scowl, you could practically see the fire of her anger.
“Vaggie, hey, hey, hey,” Charlie quickly rattled out, pressing her hands against her girlfriend’s arm and gently ushering away the spear. Vaggie refused to release the demon, who was gurgling some nonsense in his bubble of a helmet. Charlie nudged at her leg that was pinning the demon down. “C’mon. No killing. You know the rules.”
“Charlie, this guy literally came in with intent to kill! Stop treating him like he wants to be in the hotel.” “I know! But… just…” Charlie thought for a moment.
The fish headed demon started thrashing around, but Vaggie’s strong leg kept him down. He was growing desperate, you could tell, and a magic aura seemed to flicker around him as he fought for his freedom.
Charlie opened her mouth again, likely to coerce Vaggie to let the guy go, but was interrupted by a loud, squealing groan from every direction. You frowned and leaned your ear against the wall, where it seemed the loudest. The sound of screaming pipes and popping bolts made you clench your jaw and whip your arms over your head, right in time for the walls to start bursting with dangerously high pressure water.
Vaggie turned a glare to Charlie and spread her arms in a “you see?” motion. She briefly raised her leg, only to slam it back down on the fish’s head. His protective bubble popped, and he was knocked out cold.
Easily enough, the pressure immediately began to release after the culprit had been knocked out, but the pipes wouldn’t magically fix themselves. Charlie was running back and forth, trying desperately to survey the damage to her hotel. Footsteps came thudding down the stairs and a spindly pink demon came flying down.
“Hey, what the fuck is- fuck!” Angel Dust’s curse-filled rant was interrupted as he tripped head first into the steadily increasing pool of water, not expecting his foot to get dragged behind him by said water. With a moment of confused thrashing he stood back up and shook water from his now drenched hair.
“Guys, a little help?” Charlie snapped, unintentionally raising her voice at the three of you. “I don’t know what to do, but just-! Something!”
Niffty was quick to arrive after Angel, announcing herself with a shrill cry at the state of things. She immediately went to work, practically flying this way and that with a little hammer and nails. You wondered if she could just materialize that at will.
After finally ebbing the flow at the lobby, you looked at the stairs to the next floor. A steady stream of water made a shock of cold run down your neck.
“Guys…” You pointed at the base of the stairs and drew a line with your finger, following the trail of water.
Charlie choked out a short cry, and Niffty didn’t hesitate before barreling between your legs and up the steps.
“Oh! My,” A shocked voice called from the entrance. A prickling of static covered your skin, and tension immediately left your shoulders. With him here, this would go a lot faster. You turned your head to look at the Radio Demon, who was now delicately stepping through the layer of water that was now creeping out the open lobby doors.
“This seems like a dream of a little orphan from the Dirty Thirties, I do think,” Alastor joked, mouth ajar and eyes shut in a sinister laugh at his humor. His staticy ambience changed to a personal laugh track following his statement. His cane was held up carefully on his elbow as he surveyed the scene.
“No, this won’t do! Not at all, what a dreadful sight for new patrons,” As his hand rose and a crackling of loud static filled the room, you heard the noise of metal bending and snapping as he magically forced them back into place. Even with all the pipes fixed, the water remained. You guessed it was up to the rest of you to deal with that part.
“Thank you soooo much, Al,” Charlie had her hands clasped and shaking in front of her as she continued to spew thanks at him for the help. She stopped and looked around. There was still a huge mess. And there was still a lot of water.
The lot of you had spent the next few hours desperately trying to scoop, dump, scoop again, dump again, all the water out, but it seemed neverending. Husk had showed up at some point, went on a furious rant about his collection of now-smashed bottles, and had been cradling the remaining one ever since.
Charlie had given everybody a verbal pat on the back, and called it a night. “We can get back to it in the morning.” She said this, but you had a feeling she would remain up trying her best to fix the mess. Alastor had excused himself some time ago, saying something about his broadcasts and his papers. Since then, your thoughts have been filled with aggravation from his lack of aid. Yes, he had fixed the pipes, but the water.
You gave a light smile to Charlie, half in thanks and half in apology, before heading up to your room. Your jaw was clenched with anticipation for what your room might look like. You could already visualize the damp curtains, the dripping bed, the mildewy air… And your clothes were surely ruined. You’d have to buy something to wear while you washed everything you owned. You sighed at the thought.
You took a breath before pushing the door open. And, when you looked inside, it was… completely dry.
“What the hell.” You deadpanned, eyes scanning the entire room. Surely there was at least a puddle of water somewhere. The water had affected every level, and although you did live on one of the higher floors you still couldn’t understand how your room managed to escape the flood.
You stepped inside and closed the door behind you, making quick work of your drenched clothes and changing into something dry. You fell face first into your pillows. Your eyes were so, so heavy.
A few seconds passed before a knock interrupted the sleep that had been creeping over your body. You heard the faint warbling of radio frequency, and felt both nervousness and anger at the thought of seeing Alastor.
You rolled off the bed and stomped your way over to the floor, flinging it open and glaring up at him. He simply smiled back down at you, his head tilted questioningly as if he had no clue why you were in such a mood.
His eyes broke from yours and he peered into your room. With a pleased glint in his eye, he brushed past you. You wanted to say something about his intrusion, but you knew it would be useless. So you just followed him in.
“Lucky you!” He said. “I took it upon myself to look into all the rooms, and yours is the only one that is still in such a shape.” You watched as he examined the contents of your room, grabbing up a decoration here and there to look it over before setting it back down.
He sighed, eyes closing as his wide smile closed into a meager grin. “Unsurprisingly that little bayou of mine flooded much worse than everywhere else. As much as it reminds me of home, even I’m not one to sleep in the marsh.” He laughed a little.
Does this guy even sleep, you wondered. You had seen his room once before, and envisioned that marsh in the corner of his room completely overrunning the rest.
“Uh,” You toed the carpet and pursed your lips. You were still a little upset with him, but the idea of him going through the painstaking process of looking through every room in the hotel made it more reasonable for him to disappear earlier. “I mean, you could… stay with me. Tonight. Just tonight. Everything should be fine tomorrow, but I don’t want you without a bed. You know.” You rambled.
You and Alastor had gotten close over the past year, a little closer than he was with anybody else, but you avoided thinking too hard about your relationship. You worried that overthinking would cause you to accidentally overstep a boundary and you would lose the progress you’ve built getting to know him. You were worried about doing just that even as the offer tumbled from your mouth.
You watched as his teeth began to peek through his lips as his smile widened. There was something in his expression that you couldn’t quite place. Pride, maybe? Accomplishment? You weren’t sure. You didn’t have much time to consider it before his smile composed and he remained unreadable.
“How bold of you,” His voice cooed, the static that surrounded him buzzing louder as his face got closer to you. You swallowed back a lump that had formed at the proximity. “Inviting a man into your room. It’s rather unbecoming of a lady like yourself.”
“I-” Your face grew hot.
“I’m joking!” He interrupted you, leaning himself away and back in a laugh. He waved his hand at you while you frowned. You hated the way he lived off of teasing and embarrassing.
“Okay, nevermind then!” You folded your arms and stuck your nose to the side and in the air. His laughter paused and he looked back down at you. Heat still burned on your cheeks and ears.
He examined you for an uncomfortably long period of time. You had your eyes squeezed shut and you upheld your attitude in the silence for as long as you could before the prickling of radio static on your skin became too uncomfortable. You peeked open one eye to look, and immediately got nervous.
He was just standing there. Just staring with his sinister red eyes. It didn’t help that he was quite taller than you. Looming and staring. Probably the worst combination, especially with that buzzing of his.
You felt like an open book, way too vulnerable under his gaze. You lowered your head to look at nothing in particular by your feet.
“So… yes or no…” You said, taking back your earlier statement. “You can have the bed, of course. I’ll just… find a blanket for the floor or something.” If there’s anything dry, you added to yourself.
His expression broke from concentration, lifting immediately into a gleeful, toothy grin. He wrapped his arm around your shoulder and guided you to the bed.
“Won’t be necessary!” He cheered. He pulled at the covers and pushed you down gently. Or, well, gently by Alastor’s standards. You still bounced upon impact. You sat there, a bit dazed with confusion as you watched him cross to the other side of the room and tuck himself under the same sheets.
“Alastor- Hey, really, I don’t mind-” He put a finger up to your lips, dramatically shutting you up. You decided to listen.
“What’s a sleepover between two close friends!” He said gleefully. You couldn’t help but let the term ‘friends’ echo in your mind as you fiddled with your thumbs.
Silence filled the room again, but after a while it became more comfortable than awkward. The sound of radio frequencies had died down a little. You refused to look at him. The clock ticked faintly in the corner.
You nearly jumped out of your skin when you felt clawed fingers grab into your shoulder and pull you closer to the Radio Demon. You aided the movement by using your hands to scoot towards him.
Again, you had become close with him over the year, but you never took too long to consider just what you were. You always waited for him to make any move, because otherwise he might completely reject you. So, when he made the decision to bring you closer, you happily obliged, albeit a little anxiously.
You gingerly put your head against his chest, listening to the thrum of his heart. Or what might be a heart. Who knows. You held in a laugh when you realized that even that had some sort of radio-like sound to it. Nonetheless, it did help lull you out of any nerves you had being so close and intimate to Alastor.
You lifted yourself off of him with an elbow and looked at him. He was already looking at you, unsurprisingly, so your eyes met his. They were glowing a little, you noticed.
His face still had a grin, but it was light. And comfortable. His eyebrows were relaxed as he just watched you.
Your heart was beating uncomfortably fast, and you were embarrassed to think that he might be able to feel it with how close your chest was to his.
If he did, he made no indication of it. He just kept looking at you with the strangest expression you’ve ever seen on him. It was gentle. His words from earlier played in your mind again; when he called you and him ‘friends.’
Did ‘friends’ look at each other like this?
Did ‘friends’ inch closer to each other as they stared into the others’ eyes, bodies flush against one another and legs beginning to tangle?
Your jaw clenched and unclenched as you neared him, and you frantically examined him for even the smallest hint of wanting you to stop. You swore he was leaning in too, though.
You felt his breath brush against your nose. Your heart was practically clawing itself out of your ribs and the elbow you had propped yourself up on grew wobbly with nerves. When Alastor’s eyes began to shut, ever so slowly, you followed suit.
And, for an incredibly brief moment, your lips touched his. One, two, maybe three seconds passed before he pulled away from you. You opened your eyes to watch his expression grow a bit puzzled. His smile was tight, and his brows furrowed slightly as he watched you. He seemed deep in thought, with what exactly you couldn’t guess, but he didn’t seem uncomfortable.
At some point his hand had come and was gingerly settled on your hip, which he used to pull you back down. Your elbow practically gave out and you fell a little rough back down on his chest. You couldn’t help but stare widely at the wall for a moment, just listening to his heartbeat again. Was it beating faster than before?
You smiled lightly. You had no idea if this was a step forward in your relationship with the Radio Demon, or if it would be back to ‘friends’ tomorrow, but you decided to just cross your fingers. You reached your arms up to wrap under his neck, and you slowly made yourself comfortable. He had lightly settled his own arms on your back.
You couldn’t help but send silent thanks to that aggressive fish demon from earlier, and a thanks to god himself, as strained as your opinions towards that guy was, for keeping your bed dry.
When Alastor began drawing shapes in your back, gently dragging his sharp nail across your clothed skin, you cast away all worries about the next day out of your head. It all seemed so far away now as you took in the smell of the demon laying underneath you.
You just hoped this would become a regular thing, because man, was this comfortable.

There’s an itch under Jinwoo’s skin. Unscratchable and constantly pressing on the back of his mind. It’s a feeling as if he needs to fight something but no matter what he fights, or kills, or conquers, it never goes away. His mind stays clouded and the underside of his skin itches as always. It’s a hazard. Jinwoo hasn't been worried about slipping up in a while but he just might come close like this.
At Jinah’s insistence he allowed himself to take a break for once. He wasn’t actually able to argue with her about his workload once she started loudly fake-crying. She had invited him to go out with her and her friends, something about a movie and lunch; she insisted that getting out of the house for something other than a raid would be good for him. Which albeit did sound nice despite the fact that he would be hanging out with a bunch of teenagers; however, that persistent nagging in the back of his brain probably wouldn’t let him enjoy it anyway. Instead Jinwoo opted for staying home and letting the quiet of his empty house wash over him.
He bathes for longer than usual and nearly falls asleep at one point, he doesn’t actually feel fatigue physically much anymore but as for mental fatigue? There’s not much Jinwoo can do for that one. He drops himself onto his bed and finds his mind drifting to scenes of his high school years and the people he hasn’t thought about in what feels like a lifetime. He must really be tired; who would have thought he’d spend his day off reminiscing like this.
So much has changed, but above all else Jinwoo wonders if you’re the same. Probably not, everyone changes as they age, it’s natural. Maybe the important things are the same though. The way your tongue pokes out to wet your bottom lip as you think. The way your fingers twirl a pencil when you’re bored. The way your eyes light up when he tells a bad joke.
God Jinwoo hasn’t seen you in forever, he wonders what you’re up to now; is your number still the same? Would you even answer if he called? Does time heal all wounds? Surely enough years have gone by since the fight, you have to be at least a little curious as to what he’s up to. Curious enough to answer the phone? Maybe later, or maybe never, you’re probably better off without him in your life anyway.
Maybe it’s an effort to torture himself but before Jinwoo even realizes he’s doing it, he’s searching your name on social media. At first nothing comes up and something cold grips in his chest for just a moment, but he’s not stupid. He looks up your other friends and finds you easily through tagged photos. You changed your name, you always said you would one day. It makes him crack a smile as he scrolls your page. It’s hard not to take notice of the fact that there doesn’t seem to be a partner in any of your pictures. It’s just you alone or you with a group of friends. A significant other is truly nowhere in sight. The idea that maybe you’ve been waiting for him manifests from this and sticks in his brain like glue. That can’t be possible, but it’s nearly unshakeable. Nearly, as it’s mostly forgotten when he slides across a recent picture of you lounging on the beach. It’s clearly taken by a friend as you seem to be looking somewhere else entirely.
It makes his breath hitch slightly, you really don’t look anything like you did in high school, but then again neither does he. You’ve somehow gotten even prettier and it’s making the room grow hotter around him. Jinwoo wants to see you again so badly. The way that you’ve changed some isn’t what kills him though, in fact it’s the opposite. Sure, maybe your face, even your body, have changed since he’s last seen you; but he can tell that you’re still the same from this one picture. Truly, the stupid smile on your face and complete unawareness of anything happening around you is just so like you. He’s seen what he needs to.
Locking his phone he sighs heavily, now that he’s done with his little trip down memory lane a new problem seems to be making itself known. He’s growing undeniably hard and he has an idea as to why but he won’t be confronting that right now. Instead Jinwoo tells himself that he’ll be able to bring himself some relief and keep his head carefully blank. Truthfully he knows this to be a lie, he’ll wander; and as he wanders he may find himself somewhere he shouldn’t be.
But maybe… Toying with his waistband he struggles with himself. Maybe he should let his brain wander. After everything maybe he’s allowed to have this one thing. Just this once he’ll let himself indulge in thoughts of you he’s never dared to let himself before.
Shoving his pants down, Jinwoo shudders when the first image of you passes through his mind, it’s that picture of you on the beach. He uses that picture to fill the semi-blurry image of you in his head, but he knows it’s you when he brushes his fingertips across his cock and sighs quietly. Despite the fact that the new image of you in his head isn’t clear he can still imagine your presence and that’s what matters.
Jinwoo rubs the head of his cock with his thumb and imagines what it would be like to kiss you, to feel your body squirm under his own as he covers your throat in marks. He wants people to know that they can’t have you, they don’t know you, not like he does. A choked sound escapes him and his eyelids flutter closed. Softly stroking his cock with a loose hand he wonders if you would beg him to hurry up. Would you tug at his shirt and whine, your strong personality melting away entirely? He would like to think so, he wants it to be his turn to take care of you.
He would take his time to open you up, maybe he doesn’t have experience but he can take directions well and he’s an extremely fast learner. Jinwoo’s breath hitches, hand tightening to a firm hold as he strokes himself faster at the thought of putting his mouth on you. He can vividly imagine your legs over his shoulders, heels grinding into his back as he guides your hands to his hair. He wants to feel it, he wants to taste you on his tongue, he wants the sharp sting of your tugs at his hair. He wants it, everything. God he’d give anything to hear the way you would cry out so brokenly for mercy, a break, but he wouldn’t be able to stop not unless you actually wanted him to. You’d kick him if that were the case, but until then he imagines with absolute clarity giving you orgasm after orgasm.
His breathing becomes labored, a whine escaping his throat as he twists his cock just right, he’s so close and he wants to draw it out, imagine actually fucking you, but he can’t. The thought of you looking at him blissed out, tears in your eyes as you beg him for a kiss, it’s too much. With one fist wrapped in the bedsheet at his side and the other tugging at his cock with harsh, heavy strokes, Jinwoo cries your name. He continues to stroke himself to the point of near overstimulation, just to keep seeing you in his head; but he can’t continue forever so eventually images fade as does the high. Jinwoo’s left with his chest heaving even though it wasn’t strenuous at all. Perhaps it was the exhilaration of thinking of you after all of these years.
The perpetual itch is gone now, laughably so, but replacing it is a deep reverberating ache in his chest. He lifts his arm to stare at the mess he’s made, not only of hand but also his social life. Maybe Jinwoo should call you. What’s the worst you can do? Tell him you hate him? He’ll live. He ignores the pang in his chest at the very thought of you hating him. He sighs and grabs a tissue, he needs to clean up and pull up his goddamn pants.
That all takes but a moment. After washing his hands for an inordinately long time he stares at himself in the mirror, the flush to his cheeks and ruffle to his hair are inconspicuous at best and completely telling at worst. He needs to fix that before his sister comes home but first he needs to call someone.
The dial tone lasts so long he starts to pull his phone away from his ear, unprepared to hear the voicemail. He’s ready to hang up before the ringing abruptly cuts, there’s a deep aching pause, then a soft voice.
”Jinwoo… Is that you?”
Well? His brain echoes the question at him. Is it?
