Tom's fate in the DotC rewrite

In canon, Tom, y'know, "I beat women and kidnap children" Tom, is given a heroes death. He's fondly remembered as a great father by his kids and dies trying to save one them. Erin Hunter wanted us to feel bad for him to an extent, understand him somewhat;

Thankfully, I'm not Erin Hunter.

Everyone in DoTC!Chelford knows about Tom's abusive reputation to use his power against other cats

He used to be apart of Slash's Clowder, but was demoted and kicked out after his abuse was brought to the light

He's been on a sort of "watch list" for a while now, he can't really go out that far without being hovered over by watchful eyes

ClearSky's new colony in the Forest (Dubbed the Forest Cats) had been heavily restricting borders, denying Loners and Kittypets of food

This caused a prey shortage from over hunting, having no previous knowledge of the rates at which the prey is able to reproduce at

What does the last two parts have to do with Tom? Well:

Tom's abuse of Bumble and TurtleTail had been figured out, and Slash decided "Okay fuck it, we're killing this guy, everyone get your pitchforks."

Tom saw the Forest Cats as a cowardly means of escape; So he fled

He does NOT- and I repeat- NOT befriend One-Eye

One-Eye actively hates Tom on suspicion that he had something to do with Bumble's death (Who is One-Eye's daughter in the rewrite)

It took a while for Tom to adjust and for ClearSky to welcome him in fully, but eventually he gained the trust of the Forest Cats

He partook in the heavy restrictions of food, driving off starving loners and punishing those who hunted in the forest

He's betrayed everyone before, and he'll do it again

Tom was already a large cat, he lost some weight, sure, but with all of the protein he could eat to his heart's content, and all of the battle training, he became a beast of a cat

But he still did have some good meat on his bones

Tom's still very much a major coward. Despite everything, he'd rather not stand face-to-face with the cats that vowed to kill him and he would choose to flee a losing battle if it meant his own survival. So when One-Eye's Army began to close in on the Forest Cats, Tom felt a deep sense of horrifying fear and dread in his stomach. Of course inbetween these events, lots of things go down with TurtleTail and their kids, but that's for another post.

When One-Eye fully took over the Forest Cats' territory and ClearSky's Camp, he took many prisoners with him. But Tom and a few other cats would be able to dodge the imprisonment. But only for so long.

So I have two ideas for what I want to go from here with Tom's eventual capture:

He "volunteers" to go and search for an escape route for the escaping cats, with motivations to desert everybody in the Forest and find some new life somewhere else

The escaping cats are discovered and a battle ensues, Tom flees and hides in a ditch until everything seems in the clear

I might also brainstorm some other ideas. But either way, Tom is eventually captured by One-Eye's Army and imprisoned. I'd have this moment between Tom and some other cat where they tell him

"How could you… How could you betray your own community. Was it worth it, Tom? Was it worth all of the death, the pain and suffering you assisted in? Did it feel good when you gorged down on all of that food that could have saved hundreds of starving cats?"

And all Tom could mutter back was, "It was… delicious". Not even acknowledging everything else.

One-Eye hated the Forest Cats, but he held a special hatred for Tom, for his involvement in starving so many cats, for the abuse of innocent lives, for the link he held towards Bumble's death

It was only fitting that he was punished the way he would soon be

One-Eye and Slash talked it over and decided to give back to their starving community in a well-meaning, but horrific and dark way

The cats they gathered were delirious with hunger, even drooling puddles at the thought of rotting carrion

Tom was dragged from his prison and onto a ledge that peered over the crowded hollow that was ClearSky's Camp

"It's time you give back to the community you abused, the ones you starved.", One-Eye hurled Tom to the bottom of the hollow;

And they ate him.
