Please, Mike, Go Tell Him Now, Before You Lose Him Forever. You Still Have So Much Time. Im Begging You,
“Please, Mike, go tell him now, before you lose him forever. You still have so much time. I’m begging you, from the bottom of my heart, as your best friend, Party member, and next door neighbor, don’t make my mistake. This pain is permanent.”
Lucas knows about Mike and Will
First off, of course the context is needed that Lucas has known the two of them the longest out of any of the kids. He is Mike’s neighbour and joined their party even before Dustin. He also played wingman for Mike previously in S3, trying to help get Mike and Eleven back together. It’s not a stretch of the imagination that Lucas would end up in a role like that again.
So, the hospital scene at the end of Season 4.
There’s a few things within this scene that are a little suspicious, and then one big thing that basically has no explanation other than Lucas suspecting something is going on with Mike. I brightened the scene here- first let’s just acknowledge they held hands on Lucas’ back. This is the only kind of direct hand touch we get this season.
![Lucas Knows About Mike And Will](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7dad5c9382cdbe2a617ceae05e83a2cc/66190cc35718fe38-4f/s500x750/df9d4cb6c308bd67318a94f8242577d939c25c43.jpg)
Lucas can’t see that.. but it’s on his back. Of course he would be able to feel it. It’s also another moment that separates Mike and Will as a pair, versus Eleven on her own. Here’s the full clip below. And then just LOOK at the expression Lucas gives Mike after he sees El lingering behind. Your friend just visited as soon as he possibly could to give you support. Why would you look at them like this after he hugs you? Because he knows there’s something weird going on in the relationship between Mike and El. No other explanation.
![Lucas Knows About Mike And Will](https://64.media.tumblr.com/0e2363adc46e00d1e434e5c17af348fb/66190cc35718fe38-d4/s500x750/5cef61b378f331527e2c646ba5599b2ab12f2b97.jpg)
Lucas is clearly giving Mike a “what the fuck is going on” kind of expression, eye squinted, eyebrows furrowed. There’s also a blink and you’ll miss it moment where Mike’s breath catches after the contact with Will’s hand, and he makes a split second glance to look at their hands (which I captured in the first image).
Then after Lucas hugs El, he clearly parts and steps back to give room for Mike to join beside his girlfriend. But Mike crosses the room to put himself in between El and Will instead. Another thing Lucas would have found weird. Lucas isn’t dumb.
![Lucas Knows About Mike And Will](https://64.media.tumblr.com/42e606c26cf9155899311b29df4c72d2/66190cc35718fe38-23/s500x750/2331e9ac0699cfbe24039bcb4c1ddcb8fe657a42.jpg)
Then we have the shotlisting post from Ross’ instagram. Shot listing is where they plan out what happens within an episode and what kinds of shots they want. This image is obviously an Easter Egg for fans about who’s interacting with who in the first 2 episodes (ie Stonathan shenanigans of which we already know about). I didn’t see it at first but Lucas is clearly placed in the centre of a triangle between El, Mike, and Will. He’s the centre of the triangle.
![Lucas Knows About Mike And Will](https://64.media.tumblr.com/cb38c8cc2998a6f05358d4381312a859/66190cc35718fe38-76/s500x750/bd30eb9d711f925425750cc8faf402d20b55fb2b.png)
![Lucas Knows About Mike And Will](https://64.media.tumblr.com/0eaeeb73288cd43c3fa63be45b683b03/66190cc35718fe38-3e/s400x600/47700223e384f013d6211f5ae62a574a20743d95.jpg)
This makes sense with what we know about S5 thus far as well. There’s a confirmed plot line that has Dustin trying to isolate himself from the rest of the group (if he hasn’t already been isolated enough from the party in recent seasons). It shows up in the shot list image too of course, with Dustin on the opposite side. For the kids, due to Max being out of commission, the only interactions we are going to get in the first two episodes before the time jump seem to be between El, Will, Mike, and Lucas. We also have confirmation from Millie that El and Lucas will be spending a lot more time together than they had in previous seasons.
Moving onto a bit of cornplating for the last points which just serve as some cherries on top of this theory - we already have imagery of Lucas acting as a bridge between Mike and Will in the party image Ross gave us. This is post time jump most likely because of the new outfits, so it’s interesting that this role could continue throughout the season.
![Lucas Knows About Mike And Will](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ad5e08ddf8c190bd07775ad86560b179/66190cc35718fe38-64/s500x750/6a54f056caecf1493f52ed18962485e6d99c25bd.jpg)
![Lucas Knows About Mike And Will](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ffb3038f4dfbc9f93dd92a67cb94abad/66190cc35718fe38-19/s500x750/4e39274574c60b2252ba7b67e08b2d49c67e106f.jpg)
We also have the imagery of Lucas holding a suspiciously coloured blue and yellow shield in Will’s painting of the party. A bit of a stretch, sure. But complied with everything else it is definitely interesting to consider.
Now for the character reasoning, which is always important to consider: why would Lucas end up in this position?
Lucas is going through his girlfriend being in a coma after they had a major distance in their relationship. A coma that Lucas in universe has no clue if she’ll ever wake up from, and realistically (in-universe) hopes are slim that she will recover. And if she does, she may not have all the memories of times spent together still with her. There’s probably so many regrets swirling around his mind of things he could have done or said in the time that they had together. Lucas doesn’t have this luxury - but his friends still do.
Lucas is Mike’s oldest friend outside of Will, and Will/Mike are Lucas’ first friends. They existed as a party even before Dustin.
Out of his pain of ‘losing’ Max and the wisdom he learned from it, I really do think Lucas is going to encourage Mike to seize the day and take control of his life once again. Will and Mike still have the luxury of time and still have chance. If anyone could convince Mike his feelings are reciprocal, it would also be Lucas.
Furthermore, Lucas understands that as a black man in fairly rural 80s Indiana, his relationship with Max is also one that is singled out due to prejudice against interracial couples. Interracial marriage would only have been legalized less than twenty years ago. It’s not quite the same, but again if anyone understood the position Mike would be in (other than say Robin) - it would be Lucas.

Byler saving Max by finally accepting their love for each other and rejecting society’s standards…It reminds me of someone’s iconic lunchroom line…
“It’s forced conformity…that’s what’s KILLING the KIDS!!! That’s the REAL MONSTER!!!”
The Significance of Lover’s Lake and Byler (Theory)
![The Significance Of Lovers Lake And Byler (Theory)](https://64.media.tumblr.com/924a0b8812a3ba9c35c0914b827c1925/adca8e4cabf10577-58/s500x750/52fc3b9dad51424da7e09cbcd898a1267dc9fb9e.png)
'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact
Yes we're lovers, and that is that (Heroes by David Bowie)
Part 2 here
(Warning: This post has mentions of sex (nothing graphic)… if you’re uncomfortable with that please do not proceed.)
![The Significance Of Lovers Lake And Byler (Theory)](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2d271e906d25f256982617d6a69a9ba6/adca8e4cabf10577-7d/s500x750/8d032b45b2078980f0b42725d3d055a2618f929e.png)
So, Lover’s Lake has existed within the show ever since season 2, when Will mapped out the entirety of Hawkins. The lake is shaped like a heart (keep this in mind for later) thus the name “Lover’s Lake”. Makes sense within the town of Hawkins, but does not provide an explanation on a subtextual level. None of the “lovers” existing within the show has been associated with the lake (you could say Steve/Nancy but honestly it’s a stretch since they never actually rekindled their romance.)
This leads me to the question… why call the lake “Lover’s Lake” without associating any lovers to it?
Because maybe, there will be lovers connected to it… but they aren’t lovers… yet.
Okay, let’s get back to the shape. A heart. ❤️ Hm. Now which character within the show is most associated with hearts? Which character is even referred to as the heart by their love interest?
Mike.
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that he’s one part of the “lovers” here. Thus ruling out many other romantic pairings within the show. Leaving only two pairings: Mike/El and Mike/Will. I won’t go into detail on why I believe Mike and El will inevitably break up, you can read a lot of different analyses for that. So that leaves… Mike/Will. Not lovers yet.
Okay, here’s the part where I may get crucified. The definition of lovers.
Please put your pitch forks down for this.
Lovers usually refers to two people in a sexual relationship outside of marriage.
With all the subtext (and actual text) around sex and sexuality, and how we see Will struggle with his own sexuality, there is a likely conclusion here. He’s going to confront his sexuality. To do so, he will have sex. With whom? Well, with the one person he loves the most, the one he affectionately refers to as the heart… his best friend… Mike.
Now, where’s this going to happen? What better location than somewhere empty and secluded.
![The Significance Of Lovers Lake And Byler (Theory)](https://64.media.tumblr.com/880d16ca0cdd4350238cf3101f165888/adca8e4cabf10577-cc/s500x750/b28b8e0be7c8d676a82971f57cb46f46217baa5f.png)
Reefer Rick’s lakeside house.
Now, who is “Reefer Rick”?
Also known as, Rick Lipton, Reefer Rick is a drug dealer who’s closely acquainted with Eddie.
He’s an enigma. We never see him. All that is known about him are the things mentioned by other characters.
He’s currently in jail apparently for dealing drugs. Also, he seems like a town pariah.
Also, he isn’t too keen on Fast Times (returned on time), at least not as much as “Cheech and Chong” (returned late each time.) That shot at 53 minutes and 5 seconds in Fast Times doesn’t do it for him, I guess. Unlike watching two guys get high.
His name choice is an interesting one.
“Reefer” Rick Lipton.
“Reefer” is a synonym for “marijuana cigarette”. Okay, makes sense, he is a drug dealer after all. But why the term “cigarette”? Well… there’s this other word that also happens to be a synonym for “cigarette”…
![The Significance Of Lovers Lake And Byler (Theory)](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3101a5a94256dd5621d29e27cbb2c9bc/adca8e4cabf10577-5b/s500x750/6547c7a4e324922438e0017e78ff840c462fa606.png)
Then Rick… short for “Richard”. Richard is one of the few names out there with a nickname that is also slang for male genitalia… “Dick”.
Then finally… Lipton.
![The Significance Of Lovers Lake And Byler (Theory)](https://64.media.tumblr.com/fb0cb2be1e2704b6f1a84722842e3781/adca8e4cabf10577-a4/s500x750/27b375c7b1bcad1513e983e34af7d9d7f04ce640.png)
As Robin says, spelled like Lipton tea. Now, why would the writers use the name “Lipton” and even reference the tea company if there were no significance to it? They wouldn’t. We know this about them.
So why “Lipton”?
Let’s do a bit of research here, shall we?
The founder of Lipton tea was a man named Thomas Lipton.
Thomas Lipton just so happens to have been a closeted homosexual man who had a long term relationship with another man whose name is… *drumroll please*
William Love.
Okay, that can’t be just a coincidence right?
So moving on to Reefer Rick’s house.
We see glimpses of his living room, kitchen, and briefly his bedroom.
![The Significance Of Lovers Lake And Byler (Theory)](https://64.media.tumblr.com/eac5479834511e55feb1ce63dcc5b68f/adca8e4cabf10577-d8/s500x750/96ef4ca0a56b84cff10305a16fef09d762faf1fe.jpg)
Jason and his buds are searching for Eddie and this involves looking under the mattress? As if, Eddie could successfully hide under there? Haha okay sure.
The angle of this shot is interesting too, because the bed is essentially being shown off to us.
This bed with a blue blanket and yellow sheets. Hm. Interesting.
Keep in mind this scene is essentially unnecessary. They could have easily shown Jason et al searching for Eddie without creating an entire new set for a room that’s only used in one single insignificant shot. Therefore, I do not think it’s unreasonable to believe this is used for foreshadowing.
Then we also get this shot from outside the window into the bedroom.
![The Significance Of Lovers Lake And Byler (Theory)](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e352a6c5f960d6241b50d7dd7cd3c392/adca8e4cabf10577-0b/s500x750/8adebf0b71755853a94457addab1a94e85701b46.png)
Look familiar? I thought so too.
![The Significance Of Lovers Lake And Byler (Theory)](https://64.media.tumblr.com/641650adbddf943afc441c9e265b4e70/adca8e4cabf10577-fe/s500x750/2a7f6197c21930f37251cf7e234edbcb3cb84fba.jpg)
Okay. Now for my theory/prediction.
As I mentioned earlier, Will is currently struggling with his own sexuality and feels a lot of shame and internalized homophobia. There’s also a lot of evidence that Mike is experiencing the same thing. Unlike Will, Mike conforms to the society’s expectations. He dates El, performing as her boyfriend. This is comparable to Nancy’s arc in season 1. She also conforms, and like Mike, leaves her best friend behind. We all know how that ended.
Now, what better way to wrap up the show than to have Mike correct his sister’s mistake? To have Mike reject societal expectations in favour of his best friend?
Okay so this is my theory.
Mike and Will have their first kiss an episode or two prior to 5x07. Tensions are high, but they’re busy fighting interdimentional monsters along side their friends.
![The Significance Of Lovers Lake And Byler (Theory)](https://64.media.tumblr.com/67f4b96ee39553e0432e47eda71268a9/adca8e4cabf10577-15/s500x750/41bf91f2b32048362c64b9884ff4769d3dc72cb8.png)
Then comes 5x07 which somehow leaves Mike and Will alone by Lover’s Lake. The tension between them reaches an all time high, leading to a passionate kiss and then… more. Let’s just say it involves that blue and yellow bed.
At the same time as these two become the lovers they were meant to be, another character is being saved, or perhaps being brought back to life. Perhaps another red head, one we all know and love. Yes, a major parallel and contrast to Steve/Nancy’s sex scene in season 1, which featured Barb dying. But because Mike is rejecting conformity and being authentic, another character lives instead.
I mean, what better way to represent the beauty of the love and intimacy between these two boys? Their love is literally bringing back life to the world.
So yeah, basically I’m saying that Mike and Will expressing their love for each other will save Max.
![The Significance Of Lovers Lake And Byler (Theory)](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8f543e6ecce4512c13584426d734b6ac/adca8e4cabf10577-41/s500x750/b034981c453e388b8c81e61b7f98c8104f70c856.jpg)
This also wouldn’t be the first time that Max’s survival is correlated with their relationship. As I doubt that it was merely a coincidence that in episode 4x04 we have Mike’s genuine monologue to Will, then we have Max surviving Vecna. In contrast to 4x09, which features a forced monologue from Mike to El, followed by Max losing to Vecna and barely surviving.
So, as their bond strengthens, Max’s life bar goes up (so to speak). If something interferes with their bond, Max’s outcome is more dire.
The writers have also been associating Mike/El with death…
[Tumblr only allows a limited number of images so pretend we have one of El holding dead flowers and another image of the cut scene from 3x05 with Mike/El having a moment cutting to a dead body on the hospital floor]
Mike/Will on the other hand have been associated with life. The birds chirping in the background of their final scene together, the flowers blooming between them as they stand together. Plus, blue plus yellow does equal green after all. Which is the most commonly associated colour with life.
🌿🌱🌳
To conclude, I just want to say that I personally think this would be a nice way to end their arc. I know a lot of people are uncomfortable with associating Mike/Will with anything sexual… but the show has been doing this already. Whether you like it or not, Mike and Will have been shown implicitly and explicitly that they desire each other both romantically and sexually. The fact that they have sexual desire for each other does not minimize or trivialize their friendship and love, it’s an aspect of it… adding another dimension to their relationship.
Do I think or hope they would show anything pornographic? Absolutely not (do I even have to say this?) But explicit like Steve/Nancy? Yes. Do I think they’ll be only 14/15 years old when this occurs? No. This will likely happen after a time jump.
Being authentically yourself and not conforming is overall a major theme of the show. I mean it’s called Stranger Things after all. Will people be upset by the ending of this arc? Bylers included? Absolutely. Many people within the town of Hawkins and people watching the show will both show disgust for it. But that’s the point. It’s not “normal” and that’s okay. Different is good, and can be a beautiful and wonderful thing. We all just need to open our minds and hearts a bit. I’m not just talking about the GA; many Bylers are also closed minded and stuck in their ways too. Let’s all try to work on that, shall we?
Despite the opinions of others, Will and Mike will choose to love each other which will inevitably lead to their defeat of Vecna. Love concurs all. It may be cheesy and cliche but personally? I think that’s a beautiful thing. We all can learn to love more.
Anyway, would love to know your thoughts on this.
Then we could be Heroes, just for one day
Part 2 here
Will’s Vanishing and Cabin In The Woods
So, remember when I talked in this post about Will’s vanishing and the weird newspaper articles about it? And how one article (from S1) says that Joyce claims that Will was found at HNL, whereas the OTHER article (from S2) claims that Will was found by Hopper in a cabin in the woods?
![Wills Vanishing And Cabin In The Woods](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a34027619d820b9193b1e1d054cbcd2c/494cfb592a0ca3a6-b4/s500x750/29f7073dedca2c0b483da1cac2588659aa7d54b3.jpg)
Well, look at what movie is on the S4 board (and came out in 2011, long before S1):
![Wills Vanishing And Cabin In The Woods](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d676a72d0b0aa947273080c5db3019fe/494cfb592a0ca3a6-c0/s500x750/cd067cab4b4beb7730087441774010d024b9592e.jpg)
Cabin in the Woods.
The movie that involves a lab manipulating a bunch of teens in a cabin for the purpose of experimenting on them/killing them & basically using that whole cabin area as an open-air experiment…..
![Wills Vanishing And Cabin In The Woods](https://64.media.tumblr.com/820c13ea7a06c5ed1e46a005b0b82fe2/494cfb592a0ca3a6-86/s500x750/fdd801a92730e212c7578539fc807063acc6914c.jpg)
And is it just me, or does the cabin from Cabin in the Woods look eerily familiar?
![Wills Vanishing And Cabin In The Woods](https://64.media.tumblr.com/eaafd114bf499c41debf93d6c62272aa/494cfb592a0ca3a6-ee/s500x750/b0ead7006ab43252f060445437cc2a6d7e4b8d21.jpg)
Because to me, it looks a lot like Hopper’s cabin:
![Wills Vanishing And Cabin In The Woods](https://64.media.tumblr.com/16e887c70f52d3e1476db8029d4d3d0f/494cfb592a0ca3a6-1a/s500x750/205fd9f053f292f609d2477f42f620d6d6a070ac.jpg)
Like!! We get it!!! Will was at the lab at some point!!! The lab was involved with his vanishing!!! Of course they were!!!
Stranger Things has made the General Audience care too much for Will to deny a Byler ending
In Season 1, Will was kidnapped, survived a week without food or shelter in a nightmare dimension, and was implanted by a demon. Yet once he reorients himself the FIRST thing he does is see Jonathan's hand and ask if he's okay:
![Stranger Things Has Made The General Audience Care Too Much For Will To Deny A Byler Ending](https://64.media.tumblr.com/050da75f37565a1637694dcd0e1283df/d056114d99c62f0f-5e/s500x750/8cce75a74d942b81d6aefbf234dc3882865e2d9d.png)
In Season 2, he avoids telling everyone what's tormenting him because he doesn't want to worry them and he feels babied and misunderstood. (He only tells Mike.) He gets possessed, has the guilt of causing people's deaths, and multiple times feels the pain of being burnt alive:
![Stranger Things Has Made The General Audience Care Too Much For Will To Deny A Byler Ending](https://64.media.tumblr.com/dd9dcf3e49d6fc3288d39b251ccc3a66/d056114d99c62f0f-2d/s400x600/0a37c03ec8803c2044ecf6e978f5079edb4669f3.gif)
In Season 3, his friends are not interested in D&D. Mike tells him something homophobic and cruel. Will realizes he's gay and closeted and has had his innocence stolen from him forever. He destroys Castle Byers in a fit of sorrow and self-hate:
![Stranger Things Has Made The General Audience Care Too Much For Will To Deny A Byler Ending](https://64.media.tumblr.com/89f01dcb49e177c9dcca2191cdbbe532/d056114d99c62f0f-a5/s400x600/3a3cffb54184ab389929d583a66599af24f15a02.gif)
In Season 4, he's in love with his best friend and lives with the pain that Mike is dating his sister. STILL, he unconditionally gives Mike love and support to help him in the relationship, even if it denies himself a chance to be with him. He gives El the credit for the painting HE made for HIM:
![Stranger Things Has Made The General Audience Care Too Much For Will To Deny A Byler Ending](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f44ef524ae64e6566ecc10277ab3c682/d056114d99c62f0f-a3/s400x600/695daac2fba45139a4edc3aec70c5fab59f8a8ba.gif)
For 4 seasons, the show has made Will suffer alone. What logically happens in Season 5 is that he (1) stops suffering and (2) is no longer alone.
In Season 5, the Duffer Brothers have left an open plot point where MIke's love confession to El was based on a lie. He felt romantic love for the first time because WILL confessed his love for HIM. (See my blog for more on that!)
The seeds for a "Byler twist" are all there. The main factor against a Byler endgame is a need to cater to the General Audience who might not be ready for a gay relationship between two main characters.
But not only would denying Byler be (by far) the worst instance of queerbaiting in media history, where Will's love for Mike is simply a device to prop up a straight relationship...
... It also would feel particularly CRUEL to Will. For 4 seasons, the Duffer Brothers has made sure the GENERAL AUDIENCE wants him to have a happy ending. And they have made clear that Will wants to be Mike's boyfriend so much.
Nearly every other main character in ST has had a love interest. There is no main cast addition to s5, so there is no "other boy." If Byler happens, then fans complaining about it would equate to wanting not only the gay boy, but WILL of all people (how dare you!), to be the only main character to end up alone. The anti-Bylers would be isolated.
A Byler endgame would strike a blow against homophobia in the 21st century, and goddammit have The Duffer brothers set up a perfect swing.
Will told Mike he is the heart of the party. But for the GA, WILL has been the heart of the show since the beginning. (And if Mike leads the party in s5, it's because Will's heart is on his shield.)
"Will really takes center stage again in [season] 5," Ross Duffer told Variety. "This emotional arc for him is what we feel is going to hopefully tie the whole series together."
The Duffers have said s4 was their Empire Strikes Back ending. Which means s5 is ST's triumphant Return of the Jedi.
Will WILL get his happy ending. It's all there!

BYLER and SUBSTITUTING
like this:
Because, I mean, without you, we'd all fall apart. Even me. Especially me. These past few months, I've been so lost without you. It's just, I'm so different from other people, and……when you're…when you're different, sometimes……I feel like a mistake. But you make me feel like I'm not a mistake at all.
which is the most OBVIOUS substitution in byler history because it is clear the audience is meant to pick up on it. it's not subtle. but-- mike does this too.
“It's not my fault I don't like girls. I'm not trying to be a jerk. Okay? But we're not kids anymore. I mean, what did I think, really? That we were never gonna get girlfriends? We were just gonna sit in my basement all day and play games for the rest of our lives?”
the difference is mike is projecting onto will rather than a side speaker. and you might think this isn't supposed to be used as a substitution for himself. will is not the odd one out here. dustin wanted to play games-- he had a girlfriend. like, logically, its two v two because they know dustin would be on will's side here, he'd want to play dnd. (and i'm not assuming, they say it in the fight.)
another important line here: we're not kids anymore.
let's look at byler speeches from when they were kids.
Do you remember the first day that we met? It was... It was the first day of kindergarten. I knew nobody. I had no friends and... I just felt so alone and so scared, but... I saw you on the swings and you were alone, too. You were just swinging by yourself. And I just walked up to you and... I asked. I asked if you wanted to be my friend. And you said yes. You said yes. It was the best thing I've ever done.
nothing's in red. nothing's crossed out or changed. because mike said exactly what he meant here (hoorah!). back when they were kids when they could actually tell each other their emotions and feelings because it didn't have to masquerade a romantic love. that love was normal to them until it was ostracized through internalized and externalized homophobia.
and what is stranger things at its heart??
a sci-fi show with villains and superpowers and lore YES BUT BEYOND THAT AND INTO THE CHARACTER ARCS
it's a show about kids growing up (and also jopper).
so? so, the change in their substitution says a lot. it says how hard they are hiding their feelings from each other, how it increases as they get older. which leads us back to their true feelings, aka season 2 ish, where they were pretty openly in love, in my opinion. holding hands, comforting each other, making freaking love confessions as seen above.
and juxtapose that with season 4, with all its red and changes in meaning?? we as viewers should understand that nothing the boys say is what they mean. they are hiding!!!
aka byler endgame
Mike not having a birthmark might be because of byler.
For people who don't know, originally the Duffer's wanted Mike to have a large birthmark on his face but they ended up scrapping that idea for an unknown reason, but I think I might know the reason.
All the kids from the main party in season one are all ridiculed, hurt or made fun of for something about themselves, something out of their control
Lucas is bullied for being black, Dustin is bullied for having a disability, El is treated like a lab rat because she has powers, Will is bullied for being gay and Mike.. Not really anything, he's bullied but there's not an obvious reason for it like with the others.
I'm going to use Will as an example for what I'm about to say, I think Mike is also bullied for being queer even if he doesn't know it. Will is absolutely not open about his sexuality, he keeps that hidden as much as he can and yet people bully him for it anyway because they can tell there's something different about him. The same could easily be true for Mike as well, he's bullied because they can tell something is different about him. If they had given Mike a birthmark however, everyone would assume he's being bullied for the birthmark, not for being queer, and that's not the story they're trying to tell with Mike here.
