Saw Your Mind
Pairing: Morpheus (The Sandman) x GN!Reader
Warnings: Demonic possession, swearing
Summary: When Morpheus is imprisoned, the only power he has left is entering the mind of one single human. He tries to let them go when he is released, but eventually accepts his desire to keep them around after they get taken over by a demon
Can't get out. Can't get out. Can't get out.
Waking up in a cold sweat, (Y/N) breathed deeply. Trying to get their heart to stop racing, trying to fight the desperation and fear in their body. It always happened, feeling like they were in someone else's mind. Feeling their feelings and experiencing this horrible sense of helplessness. Until (Y/N) woke up and felt like they had just broke through the surface of water. Or on the especially bad days, feeling like they were fighting through quicksand.
Another night, another nightmare seeing... being... a strange man whenever (Y/N) fell asleep. They had tried everything, pills, therapy, hypnosis, but it wouldn't stop. And they didn't expect it to, it had gotten to the point where they had accepted it.
And then it stopped. Suddenly, as if it had never happened, the nightmares were over.
Their therapist congratulated them on getting through a "rough patch", their family told them how relieved they should be. But... the main thing they now felt was loneliness. The man from the dreams was gone now, and (Y/N) couldn't completely tear their thoughts away from him. Ages of being connected to him whenever they dreamed, the strongest connection of their life. Now that the connection was gone and (Y/N) felt like they were missing a part of themself.
So... thus restarted the process of acceptance. They tried to adjust. It was the only thing they could do. Ignoring when they thought they could feel him, or see him out of the corner of their eye.
Until the moment where they couldn't ignore it any longer.
***
Standing at the bus stop, waiting for the bus to arrive. Periodically checking their watch. The same day as always. But as their eyes flickered over the cars around them, their attention was caught by a figure standing across the street.
(Y/N)'s breath caught in their throat as they recognized him. Not by his appearance, they had never seen him before. But the severed connection had returned when they looked at him. It was the dream man, they could feel it. It was obvious to them.
Acting purely on their instincts, they stepped towards him. Desperate to get closer and figure out what was happening. (Y/N) knew he shouldn't be real, knew that he shouldn't be there.
Standing in front of the road, they had just been about to run across it when a car passed them suddenly. Stumbling backwards, their attention was stolen by the car for a moment. But when they looked back, the man was gone.
"No.. no..." They gasped. Wind whipped over their face as they stepped out onto the road. He couldn't disappear again. Not again.
The mind numbingly loud noise of a car horn in front of them was their warning as the car got closer. But a hand grabbed their arm before they could be crushed, pulling them away from the road.
"Are you stupid?" The man from her dreams asked harshly with a raised voice, staring at her with an angry intensity. "What were you thinking?"
"It's you." (Y/N) couldn't believe it. "You're real."
The anger slipped slightly from his face at those words, and they had a chance to look at him properly. Pale skin, the darkest hair they had ever seen on a person, angular features. He could even be called beautiful. Hauntingly beautiful, that is.
"Yes." He told them, hand still gripping their arm as he stood over them. His voice was deep and powerful, like they would imagine a king's or a god's would be. "And so are you."
"But you were in my dreams. You were..."
"I was, and I'm truly sorry for that." Despite the power he exuded, he looked so sad, so tired. "I never meant for that to happen."
(Y/N) had many questions, starting with the one they had wondered since the nightmares began. "Who are you?”
"Dream. I'm Dream of the Endless."
"Dream, as in...? Of the what?"
"Call me Morpheus." He told them, finally letting go of them and stepping away. "I just came here to..." He paused, body tense as he let out a breath through closed teeth."I needed to see if you existed in this world. Or just in my head."
It was exactly what they had been wondering, which was why they panicked when he continued to speak. "And you are, so you won't have to see me anymore."
"Wait, what? Won't have to see you?" They had finally gotten to speak to him, and now he was talking like he was going to disappear off the face of the earth. "No! I need answers, you can't just..."
"I'm sorry." He cut through her words, and just disappeared.
They tried to speak, tried to force words out. But they just couldn't. Was this another nightmare? They pinched themself, confirming that they were really there. Was this a mental break? Possibly.
They walked home in a daze, not even bothering with their earlier plans. How could they go about their day when faced with the unexplained?
***
It had been almost a month since meeting Morpheus, and things had gotten back to normal. (Y/N) hadn't felt his presence for a while. Hadn't seen him since the bus stop.
Honestly, there was a certain relief to that. Chalking the meeting up as a mental break from a lack of sleep and returning to normal. Meeting friends for lunch, going to work, living life.
The only downside was the fact that they had lost the heightened sense of awareness. They never felt the presence anymore. So, when they entered their seemingly empty apartment, they didn't notice the feeling of someone else in the room.
Until the figure snuck behind them, a hand covered their mouth. The first sensation they felt was terror, the second sensation was the feeling of their body being taken over. A malevolent force burrowing inside of them and shut (Y/N) away in their own mind.
***
Morpheus left as soon as he heard the news, hoping and wishing that he would manage to get there before it was too late. Death had been somewhere behind him, but he couldn't take the time to check that she was still there.
"Demon." He called out, glad that there was no desperation in his voice. Only imperious harshness. "Where are you?”
"Lord of dreams. What do you want?" The evil spirit using (Y/N) voice spoke from behind him. Dream turned to look at him. The figure looked like the human, but lacked the spirit and life that typified mankind. It was one of the things he respected most about humans. There was a bruise on (Y/N)' face, most likely from the original possession and Morpheus couldn't help but feel a deep rage at the sight of their injury.
"Let them go." Morpheus commanded, not taking his eyes off the demon-(Y/N). No matter how much he wanted to look away from the evil look that twisted their face. "They are until my protection.”
The demon growled at him, debating whether to listen. "Fine." It said, obviously deciding that the human wasn’t worth the effort. It dragged itself out of (Y/N), as Morpheus made sure they would survive the process.
“Get out of here.” He told the demon when it left his human’s body. “If I find any of your kind near this human again.”
The demon hissed at Morpheus’s threat, disappearing into the night.
(Y/N) fell to the floor as they were freed, gasping for breath. There was a wild, cornered animal look in their eyes as they looked around their apartment. Finally their eyes focused on him, and they appeared to calm down slightly as they realized who he was.
“What…?” They started.
But Death, having just arrived and was standing behind (Y/N), interrupted they helpfully. “You were possessed by a demon.” She said, her voice kind.
But (Y/N), shocked by her sudden appearance, scrambled to their feet. “That the hell is?” They asked, voice tinged with fear as she stared at the beautiful being.
Death smiled kindly at them, very aware of how stressed they were. "It's alright, I'm a friend."
"Friend?" (Y/N) scoffed, hands balled into fists. "Who the hell was that freak? Who are you?"
"I'm death."'
The human sucked in a breath. "Am I dead?"
"No." The woman laughed warmly. "Don't worry about that."
"Yes, your life is still in your hands." Morpheus appeared beside them. He nodded at Death, obviously familiar with her.
The mixture of fear and confusion was causing (Y/N) to quickly start loosing their patience "Can someone just tell me what's going on?!" Their voice was raised, desperate. Pulling in the attention of the two powerful beings.
Morpheus looked at them with a raised eyebrow, before all three of them somehow ended up in a completely new location in a burst of sand.
"Okay, what the fuck?" (Y/N) asked, slack jawed. Despair laughed, standing beside them.
"This is my realm." Morpheus told them, gesturing around. "And that freak, as my sister told you, was a demon."
“Demon? Sister? Realm? Does this have something to do with how I could see you in my dreams?”
Morpheus nodded. Death stepped closer to (Y/N), putting her hand on their shoulder. "I'll leave you two to talk." She whispered to them. "I have work to do." She disappeared, seeming like she had never been there in the first place.
There was silence for a moment, (Y/N) taking in the sight of the realm and the supernatural being in front of them. "So?" They finally said, looking at the brooding man.
He sighed, sitting down. "When I was imprisoned, I tried all I could to escape. But in those attempts, I found that while I could enter your dreams as you slept, you were too far from myself to facilitate my escape. Not to make contact, just observe. Avoid my prison for a few hours each night. I watched for a time, but when I realized that you saw my mind when I saw yours... I knew I had to stop. For your safety, your sanity."
"And you got free?"
He nodded. "I came to see if you were just my mind playing tricks on me. But I thought you would be safer if I left you alone. I won't make that mistake again."
"Make that mistake again? What are you, gonna follow me around for the rest of your life? Fuck, no. I don't need this. My life was fine before you turned up!" (Y/N) was angry, bordering on furious. He had already taken over their life once, to the point where they had walked into traffic just to get a better glimpse of him. She wouldn't just let him take over her life again.
"You're human. Now that more powerful being know that you are important to me, there will be a target on your back." He reasoned with them, standing up and stepping closer.
"I can't just throw everything away." Their stubbornness began to fade as they remembered the terrifying nightmare man. They were beginning to feel just as trapped as they had in Morpheus's mind.
He rested a hand on their arm. He seemed like he was trying to comfort, but he was much to closed off for that. Too distant. "That won’t be necessary. It's just until I can fix things."
Of course if Morpheus was honest with himself, he would admit that he didn't like the idea of leaving (Y/N) alone after everything was over. Humans were so fragile, and he wasn't happy with the idea that his - that the human would get hurt again.
He only hoped that by the time that he had dealt with all of the problems his imprisonment caused, his loss of respect from Lucifer and consequentially the loss of the the demons respect as well, (Y/N) would understand that benefits of staying close to him. He would let them go if they truly wanted it, he would let them make their own choices.
But a part of him wanted them to chose him.
she's a 10 but she's constantly day dreaming ab a fictional man railing her.

Challenge Accepted
Jake "Hangman" Seresin x Fem! Reader
Readers father was in the military and once he found out her mom was pregnant, he left. Since then, (y/n) never dates any man in the military and believes that they're unfaithful and cruel. Hangman takes this as a challenge, but could it turn into more?
"Who's the pretty little thing over there?"
Phoenix turned her head to the bar to see (Y/N) wearing a blue sundress, her hair down and wiping down the bar after the crowd started to dissipate.
"Not for you, Hangman," Phoenix snapped her fingers, shaking him from his lustful gaze trance.
"Why?" He retorted.
"(Y/N) is a close friend of mine, so gross," She almost shivered at the thought of (Y/N) and Hangman, knowing his past and how they are like water and oil.
"And she doesn't date military."
"You're joking? She's working at a military bar," Coyote pointed out.
"Penny needed the extra help, and she needs money for college. She's almost done with her PhD and debt is a bitch," Phoenix always offered to help her, since it's just been her and her mom, but (Y/N) didn't like help. She knew she grew up poor and any help she got always felt like it was pity.
But Hangman wasn't listening.
Your bright smile as you made and handed off beer to other Aviators, brushing off their advances but it seemed to work almost too quickly. Aviators have a certain cockiness to them, so once they see a girl they want to take home - its happening. So why were they so quick to leave you alone?
"-man? Seresin?"
"I'll be right back," He handed off his pole to Bob, who didn't catch it, as he stalked his way over to you.
"He's got no chance," Phoenix insisted.
"Hangman get rejected? I'd like to see that," Fanboy added.
You weren't paying much attention as you added another card to the drawer, handing the man his beer - until you felt eyes.
"Hello there gorgeous, I don't think I've seen you before," You looked up to see the bright smile of another Aviator. He was tall, charming, handsome for sure, but like all the rest.
"Just started this week. You need anything?" You asked, propping your hands on the counter.
"A Corona, and your number," He flashed his charming smile at you as you checked his name tag and went searching for the card before swiping it.
"Corona for Seresin?"
"Yes ma'am," Okay, that did make your heart flutter, but some of their cheesy lines did that sometimes. You ignored it as you swiped the card and grabbed the beer.
"Here you go-" Before you could release your hand, he wrapped his around the beer and yours as it rested on it.
"Can I get a name for that pretty face?" Despite his closeness and the obvious bedroom eyes he was making, you looked down and flicked his fingers.
He winced before letting go and you planted the beer down on the counter, "(Y/N)."
"And if you haven't noticed, I'm engaged," You waved your hand in his face, a sparkly diamond ring on your finger.
So that's why they ran so quick, Hangman thought.
"Afraid to say Phoenix gave away your technique, darlin'," He said, just to see if you broke.
You sent a look towards Phoenix, who mouthed 'sorry' but you still kept the fake Walmart ring on. It's not like he'll be the last to try anything tonight.
"Afraid to say I don't date military, Seresin," You turned away to get to some older gentlemen that had walked in, throwing on a fake smile and that customer service voice.
Hangman smirked to himself before walking away, but as the older military talked amongst themselves, you looked back.
And he caught your eye.
Fuck, you thought, quickly turning away.
He was handsome, you had to admit that. The tall build, some biceps bulging from his finely pressed uniform, and a bright white smile to match? Any girl would have to be crazy not to let him take her home.
But that's just it. You were considered crazy. Having sex with any military, but missing out on an Aviator? Even Penny was amazed by your resilience to brush off these men's advances, but after you gave her the real reason, she understood.
See, your dad was a Marine. He was charming with the ladies, handsome, and knew a way with words. Your mother was unfortunately one of his victims, and even if he said they were going steady, he didn't want to be tied down. In fact, once she revealed that she was pregnant with you, he left. Insisted that you weren't his, even.
But one military enforced paternity test revealed a positive match, and he begrudgingly gave your mom the minimum to help raise you. Being involved? He'd rather die.
"Hey hun, I gotta do a quick run of supplies. You alright on your own?" Penny asked.
"Yeah, go ahead. I'll be fine," You said, handing off the last few beers since you closed in an hour.
"Take care of her for me! She's fragile!" Penny called out to everyone, and you flushed, seeing the attention on you as several called back with "of course!".
"Sorry about Hangman, he's like that with all the ladies," Phoenix came up to you, sitting herself on a stool.
"Hangman?"
"That's his callsign," You looked back to the pool table to see them all and remembered the pretty blond from earlier.
"(Y/N), how's about another shot!"
"Yeah sweetheart, and that pretty smile of yours!"
Some older men had come in an hour before and have been torturing you with incessant flirting. Even though you made the fake ring clear, they didn't give a shit.
"They bothering you?" Phoenix asked.
"Penny cut you boys off for a reason!" You shouted back without even looking back at them, and Hangman looked up to see the commotion but soon returned back to flirting with a brunette that walked in.
"They're fine. Gotta leave in an hour anyway," You told her, "so how's being back here been?"
"Fun actually, and seeing everyone again makes working with Hangman worth it."
"Why's he called Hangman?" You asked, a sexual joke coming to mind.
"Because he'll leave you in the dust. Leave you hanging," Phoenix summed up.
"Ah, a lone wolf. How fitting," You mused.
"Bend over a bit more for us, (Y/N)!"
All color drained from your face as you heard of them call out to you and immediately straightened up. They were laughing as your face flushed red with both embarrassment and anger.
"What the fuck did you say?!" Phoenix yelled, standing up.
"Oh come on! She's not even wearing shorts," The other said.
"I suggest the both of you get out," Rooster spoke up, surprising you as he seemed to appear out of nowhere.
"Oooh! I'm so scared!"
You smoothed out your dress, looking down with your arms crossed and suddenly felt insecure. Your hands went to cross over your chest, holding your arms.
Then you felt a coat going over you and looked up.
"Iglesias and Anderson, right?" Hangman asked as he walked over to them after covering you, and you watched in amazement as his entire mood switched. It was like an entirely different person was infront of you, or perhaps you misjudged how far his asshole-ishness could go.
"I thought you were already reprimanded for harassing some women here. Anderson, you've got several warnings, if I remember correctly. Would be a shame if an Admiral made a call tomorrow," He threatened and the color drained from their faces.
"Bars closed early! Everyone out!" Rooster called out, getting people out.
"Wait-" You were about to say something but Phoenix grabbed you.
"Let them handle this. You don't want to be closing with them here," She said, looking fearful for you.
"Whatever man."
They both got up, trying to act all tough but Rooster, Phoenix, Fanboy, Coyote, Bob, and Hangman made them look like they were fresh out of JROTC.
"Ma'am," It was Hangman.
"Oh, right, here's your coat," You were about to take it off.
"It's cold out, you'll need it," He said in a gentle voice, "if it's alright, I'd like to walk you to your car. I don't trust those boys."
You looked to Phoenix, you gave you a nod.
"O-Okay," You nodded and started to walk out, along with everyone else, who was watching as Iglesias and Anderson were still in their car. You hands shook as you closed the bar, the keys barely making it into the hole.
"How dangerous were they if all of you felt like you needed to help?" You dared to ask.
"Let's just say that it's better that we make sure they leave," Coyote commented as a cold breeze came by and you pulled Hangmans coat closer to you. The smell of sandalwood and pine from it brought you comfort.
"Thank you. You guys didn't have to do that, but thank you."
"They're the scum of the Academy. If it were up to us, they would've been kicked out a long time ago," Rooster said.
"Any friend of Phoenix is a friend of ours."
You said your goodbyes and pointed to your car, to which Hangman walked with you. No lustful gaze, no snarky or playful comments, just comfortable silence.
"This isn't how I imagined walking you to a car tonight," Hangman said, trying to lighten the mood with a small smile.
"And you're not who I thought you were," You said back.
"I appreciate it, ma'am," You got to your car before taking off his coat, and handing it back to him. And even if he didn't ask, you felt like it was the least you could do. You leaned up as he took hold of his coat and kissed his cheek, lingering only for a few seconds before pulling away.
"You can call me (Y/N). I'm too young to be a ma'am," You smiled kindly, trying to ignore the rapid pounding of your heart as he looked down at you.
"Have a goodnight, (Y/N)."
"You too, Hangman," And got into your car, watching him walk away and joining the others.
Fuck.
Part 2???
