John stretched, blinking the remnants of sleep out of his eyes.

“Watson! Sleep well?”

A smile found its way onto the doctor's face at the sight of his best friend poised mid-experiment at the kitchen table, safety goggles perched atop his head instead of over his eyes where they were meant to be.

“Not bad, cheers, mate. What about you?”

Sherlock hurriedly looked away, down at the bubbling test tube in his hand (which he had so far been neglecting to notice). “Yes, wonderful. Wonderful sleep.”

“You didn't go to bed, did you?”

“No, I did not.”

John groaned. “Sherlock!”

“I know, I know. But I really think I'm onto something, Watson, I couldn't risk losing my trail of thought!”

The blonde ran a hand down his face in despair. “Oh, just.. promise me you'll get some sleep tonight?”

“Now, is that really neces-”

“Please, Sherlock.” His voice was quiet. “You're doing dangerous work. What would happen if you passed out because of sleep deprivation in the middle of pouring some acid, or something? I couldn't bear to see you hurt.”

Sherlock was quiet for a moment. “I promise.”

John gave him a grateful smile, one that Sherlock returned. It was a lovely moment shared. “Thank you. D'you want a cup of tea?”

“Yes, please. Dash-”

“Dash of milk, no sugar. I know.” He crossed the room and was filling the kettle when there came a knock at the door and Mariana's head popped around the corner.

“Good morning, Mrs Hudson!”

John gave a snort of disbelief. “For the last time, her name is-”

“Um, who are you talking to?”

John blinked at Mariana, whose hands were folded, and whose lips were pressed together firmly. “What, Sherlock?” He and Sherlock looked at each other, then back at her. “What do you mean?”

“Oh, yes, of course! Silly me! Don't know how I didn't… Of course. Of course!”

“Are you feeling okay, Mariana?”

“Me?” She gave a short, shrill laugh that should probably have meant she definitely wasn't. “Perfectly. Never been better. Though, uh, thinking now, actually, I might go and have a lie down. Feeling a bit light headed. I'll leave you to it, J- boys.” And with that, she left the room, shutting the door behind her. She paused on the landing, pulled her phone out of her pocket, and dialled a number with shaking hands. As it rang, she listened to the voice speaking in the room behind her.

“-think that was about? Yeah, it was weird. Maybe she has a fever or something. I should probably check on her… Hm? Sherlock, you can't say that! No, because it's rude. Yes, it is! And you're one to talk, mate, honestly, you are just about the dictionary definition of the word ‘weird’, so…”

“Hello?” The call connected, making her jump a little. She swallowed thickly, forcing down the tears that were pricking at her eyelids.

“Carol? It's Mariana. He's doing it again.”
