The Curse Of Hair

The Curse of Hair

Being a red head is a mix of good and bad things. You become a rarity. This translates into adults complimenting you and trying to touch your hair and kids hating you.

It makes people believe that automatically you have a short temper. It’s make them wary but a the same time you are a target. You have this thing that separates you. That makes you different and kids love that. It can be worse when you are a “ginger” and have lots of freckles because they stand out. And if you don’t well than your even more strange as well for what is a red head without freckles?

You are soulless and everyone loves to tell you so. Sometimes you can make a joke of it but it gets tiring. Blending in will never be possible, even if it’s dark or light your hair is like a beacon. Forget trying to change and succeed. If you have truly red hair or medium red hair it does not like dye. You can go darker but that’s about it and even then somethings don’t work.

You become defined by your hair. And it takes over most things. The first thing people notice is your hair. And it’s the first thing they comment on. I love my hair but it took me a while too. It is a burden sometimes in the abstract way that differences are. But it’s mine and sadly my defining feature.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but don’t be racist during the COVID-19 scare.

My mom’s friend was out shopping when a (very not asian) woman came up and started berating her for not wearing a mask. Asian businesses in my area are suffering. Some people are refusing to interact with anyone who looks Asian.

Asian-Americans have been through racism already. We’re fucking sick of it. We’re not flea-infested rats; we are actual people who most likely have never been to China.

And if you’re not Asian and see someone being racist and giving a poor schmuck a hard time for having squinty eyes and dark hair, tell them to knock it off and they’re being a butt.

In Which it feels like the world is Ending

I had to put down my cat yesterday. He couldn’t walk anyone and was terrified because of seizures. And now it’s 4:00 am and I have to go to work soon. I work at a grocery store.

My days were pretty bad before this work is terrifying and to make matters worse I’m allergic to all of our cleaning chemicals. I have felt like I have been slowly losing my mind lately but I think this might be the icing on the cake.

I don’t know why I’m even doing this besides the fact that I need to get this out somewhere and it’s 4:00 am and I feel like I haven’t slept at all. Wish me luck.

What’s up just a reminder that the Hula Girl stereotype can go to hell and is in part responsible for Hawai’i being the tourist destination and getting invaded by rich white people, and for Hawaiian culture being disrespected and appropriated

Here’s a few sources on the topic:

How America’s Obsession With Hula Girls Almost Wrecked Hawai’i (the site is weird but the research is legitimate, gives a good overview of the issue and references a lot of sources that are harder to get your hands on read: books)

“Pop” Goes Hawai’i: The Twentieth Century Origins of Tourism in Hawai’i and the Impact of U.S. Pop Culture on Women in the Islands of Aloha (this one is very long but a really good read)

Misperceptions of the “Hula Girl” (this one is a personal essay but it’s an entry in the University of Hawai’i’s academic newspaper)
