100 Days Of Writing - The Process

Here’s how we’ll do this, starting tomorrow.

Make a post about your writing every day. While I hope that you’ll add a lot of words to your stories, I don’t want us to focus on wordcounts. I want you to think about your stories, your characters, your motivation for writing.

Any sort of writing is valid for this: original fiction, fanfiction, non-fiction.

I’ll be posting a theme or a question each day but you don’t have to use those. You can reblog from my post or make your own post with a mention of @the-wip-project and under the tag #100daysofwriting. Your post can be as long or short as you like. You have to warn for mature subjects and keep those sections under the cut of a :read more: .

I encourage you all to read what other writers say and reblog with comments if you have ideas and get inspired. Keep everything respectful and don’t give unsolicited criticism.

I’ll try to read and react to posts but over 50 people have registered for this via the form and more than 200 have reblogged the post to participate, so please have mercy 😜, I may not get to everyone’s posts.

I’m probably in a different time zone than most of you but I don’t think that’s a problem. You can post whenever you like and look around what others posted when it is convenient for you. And anyway, you know where to find this blog, right? 😍

Tomorrow we start! 100daysofwriting

Wip, relief in progress

@the-wip-project Day 2, here we go!

For your current WIP:  What motivates you to write this specific story? What makes this story special for you? Is there a special twist/trope/setting you want to explore? What got you started on this particular story?

To make a long story short (haha), my current wip is a transposition of my own family (hi)story. Something that's been haunting the halls of the (complex) relationship between my mother and me, what with untold truths, heavy secrets, weaved into the fabric of historical events and past social norms, all of this distilling over the years into some damaging miscommunication, a feeling of estrangement, and even transgenerational trauma.

Ironically, it all started on the day I learnt my grandfather had passed away, which was also the day I learnt he'd been alive all along my childhood, teen and young adult years. You know, it's the kind of situation like when you step onto a big thump that has grown under the family rug for years and the cloud of dust that comes forth is downright suffocating. After a few years of stubborn research, of unfathomable frustration but also precious success that have changed me more than I could imagine, I thought I was ready to talk about it. I wasn't. Some friends advised me to write about it. I couldn't.

None would do.

Since then, I've become a fervent reader of fanfiction, and started writing my own. It was a couple of years into writing that the idea of transposing my story to other characters, another place, another historical context (still war time though) and in another language (that aspect is the most crucial I think) came to me.  I do a lot of research, but obviously I take liberties in the narrative too (I'm a sucker for soulmates au 🥺)

The tacit deal I made with myself is that this writing would not only help me come to terms with what happened, bring it to life in the outer world (because nobody in my family cares about it but me, and that just looks like another sort of burial if you ask me) and find solace, through forms of reconciliation, which never took place in real life.

It's a healing process, and more. Something I'd like to give my family, even if they don't want it (yet, hopefully one day they might) And that's why I really want to finish it, though sometimes it's not easy to confront some moments/scenes, especially the ones I wish I could have experienced myself.

The biggest challenge of all will be to write war scenes. I'm not fond of violence in general. So writing this will be tough.

Jimmy Fallon Tonight Show Week

I was rewatching the amazing videos from BTS week on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last September. I noticed - humor me here, because maybe this is delulu - Jikook paired up in little ways in every video. Check it out:

Bookshop.org shares a £1m profit with indie book stores as it fast tracks them to ecommerce

Bookshop.org Shares A 1m Profit With Indie Book Stores As It Fast Tracks Them To Ecommerce

Online indie book store aggregator gets sellers moving online and shares out a £1m in profit in four months

Bookshop.org – the ‘rebel alliance’ independent online bookstore aggregator set up to fight the dominance of Amazon – has generated more than £1m for UK independent bookstores since November.

The platform, which allows book sellers to create their own store front and push out their stock, has helped many independent bookstores to rapidly create an online store during lockdown and now they are reaping the rewards.

Set up a year ago in the US and launched in the UK in November, Bookshop.org now boasts more than 200,000 customers and generated sales of more than £5m and profit of £1m for the 410 independent bookshops signed up to it.

The platform takes 70% of the sale price of the books, however it handles all the shipping and returns, as well as all customer service – often a hidden and debilitating cost of doing business online.

10% of all other sales on the site goes to support all participating independent bookshops, split between them every six months. Partners can take out their income whenever they like, providing they have a balance of £20 or more. The site offers a 30-day returns policy, but click and collect is not supported.

As a result, Bookshop.org has distributed £633,000 of the total £1m profit to bookshops in customer-designated commissions, while the remaining £367,000 is shared equally among all participating bookshops.
